A spring building boom is forecast for Seymour following liberalization of federal housing controls in Washington. Contractors expect higher construction and more materials available, with loans for residential projects rising. Veterans retain priority but non residence building will rise modestly as material allocations drop April 1.
A tower amplification system at First Methodist Church was formally dedicated during Sunday worship. The new chimes system, capable of being heard a quarter mile radius, was presented by Mrs. I N Persinger and daughters Inez and Nora as a memory of the church.
Seymour's downtown merchants announce extended hours through Christmas. Beginning tonight, stores will stay open until 9 PM each night to give shoppers a chance for last minute purchases after work, with crowds expected to browse the wide array of gifts offered locally.
The Seymour city public schools will start vacation at 3 p m Friday December 20 under N J Lasher superintendent. Classes resume Thursday January 2 after a twelve day break with no studies.
Bernard L. Umberger 48 a former Seymour resident died Saturday at a Cambridge Ohio hospital after sudden illness caused by a cerebral hemorrhage and stroke He owned a hotel and fishing boats at Seneca Lake Ohio The Wytheville Va native married Mercedes Parker December 26 1925 He is survived by wife son Brent two brothers and two sisters Burial will be in Wytheville VA
Oscar J. Christie 70 a resident here for 16 months died Sunday night at his Ewing street road home after two years of illness. Funeral 2 o’clock Wednesday at Tower Burkholder Funeral Home with Reverends Angle and Wilson. burial Riverview cemetery. Survived by widow Annie Holland Christie a son Jessie Christie Spokane Wash a daughter Mabel Graiges Bowling Green Ind nine grandchildren and three sisters Sophia Craig Corpus Christi Mabel Holland and Gladys Starkey Indianapolis. One brother preceded him in death.
Dry forces in Seymour and Jackson County back a precinct based local option for liquor control as the Indiana legislature plans a 1947 session measure. The United Dry Forces of Jackson County leads local effort with broad church backing and plans to align with statewide action.

Welmer Jewelry is run by Mr. and Mrs. Forrest Welmer, who relocated from Jonesville and bring skills in repair engraving and jewelry. Mrs Welmer’s father operates in Little Rock, Ark. fixtures are new and stock is complete.
The Supreme Court ruled 7 to 2 that Indiana may not tax a stock sale by a resident on the New York Stock Exchange. Justice Frankfurter delivered the opinion, affirming that interstate commerce exempts such sales from state taxation. Dissent by Justice Douglas with Murphy concurring. Rutledge also agreed with the court's view in a separate opinion. Almira Freeman of Richmond, Ind., opposed Indiana's prior finding that the tax, amounting to $652, was collected.
Mrs Ida M Barick age 84 of 625 North Broadway died early today after a weeklong illness. Born June 26 1862 in Shelbyville Ind she lived in Indianapolis and Seymour for years. She and Mahlon A Barick ran Seymour Greenhouses from 1898 and later sold the business. Survived by daughter Mrs Clem Roegge and grandson Clem Barick Roegee. Funeral services Wednesday at Voss Mortuary with Dr J L Prentice officiating. Burial Riverview Cemetery.
More than 600 on the lower floor and overflow in the balcony attended Shields High School’s Christmas concert. The choir directed by Paul W. Rigsbee performed carols from many nations with organist Frank Reddie adding innovations. The program ended with Silent Night as visiting choir members departed.
Senate War Investigating committee stats show the U S will spend about 171 million dollars next year to feed the U S occupied zone of Germany while the Soviet run area consumes homegrown food at no cost to Moscow. Jesse Loren McMunn of U S Route 3 SE of Seymour was charged by city police after his vehicle struck two parked cars in the 200 block of East Second Street Saturday night. The auto he drove, owned by Mary C. McMunn, hit cars owned by Lynn Cockerham of Scottsburg and Ronald Hien of Paris Crossing. Disposition of the case was expected today in city court.

Hammond of Indianapolis sister of the late Mrs. Ida Barick of Seymour She died early today at St Vincent's Hospital Funeral was at Crown Hill Cemetery She is survived by another sister Miss Margaret Poundstone of Indianapolis and two granddaughters Mary Beth and Sally Ann Hammond
President Truman will hold a news conference at 3 p m Wednesday to release the first report of the council of economic advisers. The council, created by law, will study ways to provide maximum employment and will supply a follow up report for the president to base recommendations to Congress on employment and economic matters.
Washington reported that Attorney General Tom Clark would decide whether permanent gas use of the 24 and 20 inch Big and Little Inch pipelines would create an oil industry monopoly. Key figures Ickes Arnold and Littlejohn weighed in as the Muscle Shoals compare to postwar policy.
Paris reports Leon Blum formed an all Socialist cabinet with himself as premier and foreign affairs head. Andre Le Troquer received the national defense post with control of armed forces. Josiah William Bailey a Democratic U S senator from North Carolina died at age 75 in Raleigh after a cerebral hemorrhage. He had served 16 years in the Senate and lapsed into a coma at home on Saturday. Funeral services were planned for 2 30 p m from First Baptist Church.
