With less than ten days before Christmas Day the Seymour post office reports rising mail volumes. Express shipments and mail are coming into the city. stores are crowded as the rush grows.
Seymour stores stay open tonight to let customers finish Christmas shopping. Businesses will extend hours each night through December 24 including Christmas Eve to accommodate shoppers.
The Seymour post office extends hours this week for Christmas mailing. Both the parcel post and money order windows stay open Saturday afternoons until 4 PM and a lobby table assists customers mailing greetings and packages. Postmaster Walter H L Droege says night hours may be added to reduce congestion. Parcel post activity has risen and volume is expected to double soon.
Orlando H. Hedrick age seventy one of Houston died at 4 30 this morning after two months of illness with several diseases. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at Houston Church and burial will follow in Deckard Cemetery. Born December 27 1868 he was the son of Shelby Hedrick and Catherine Callahan Hedrick. He married Mary L. Lucas February 20 1892 in Cooper Indiana. He was a farmer and blacksmith and is survived by his son Floyd Wayne Hedrick of Tous ton and two daughters Mrs Olive
The Seymour fire department responded Sunday afternoon to Albert Gill's home at 515 West Brown street where a car backfiring during a garage exit ignited a blaze. Firemen reported only minor damage as rain fell steadily.
National Youth Administration reports 111 girls across twelve Indiana counties prepare and serve nutritious lunches. At Clearspring township in Jackson County twenty young women bus to the school, cook, serve 250 meals, clean, and attend a class on balanced meals. They are aged 17 to 25, unemployed, learning food planning and economy for future work.
Seymour Post American Legion urges local residents to fund a Christmas basket program with food and toys. Less than $100 raised to date, needs several hundred more to cover all children. Donations can be left with Walter Schierling, post treasurer, and contributors will be listed daily in The Tribune.
Bess McClannon of this city was fined 10 dollars and costs 20 dollars total with a ninety day license suspension after pleading guilty to operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated in city court before Mayor Stanley A Switzer Saturday. Leo Lewis was fined 1 dollar and costs 11 dollars after pleading guilty to public intoxication in East Second Street arrest by city night police. W H Taylor colored of Indianapolis pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an accident and was fined 1 dollar and costs 11 dollars. improper license plates charge was not prosecuted.
Milton Hawkins of Owensboro Kentucky faces murder charges in the death of taxi driver Edmund Davis of Jeffersonville. The Floyd Cir ct Court trial opens this morning with witnesses from Seymour state police post and local police subpoenaed. Co-defendants James Hayden and Clementine Luttrell also charged. Luttrell trial scheduled for December 30 in Clark City Court Jeffersonville.
The Seymour Lions Club and Shields High School Hi Y Club collected bags filled with toys shoes coats and clothing for winter relief. Items were moved to the Seymour Welfare Association for sorting and distribution with baskets of toys for Christmas day and other goods to help the needy through the winter.
In Washington December 16 AP reports that the electoral college convenes in all 48 state capitals to cast ballots for Roosevelt. The votes will be mailed to Washington and Congress will count the returns on January 6, completing the formal recognition of his third term victory.
The Seymour Rotary Club holds its annual boys party at 6 15 tonight at the Elks Home West Second street with Ro tarian Jack O Hearn in charge. Rotarians will pick up each boy and escort him to the Elks dining room where a Christmas tree and gift exchange await. Santa Claus will appear and the evening ends with a trip to the Majestic Theater for the feature film.
A high wind Sunday night into today damaged electrical wires across Jackson County and left parts of Crothersville without electricity for a time. Other minor damage occurred due to the wind.
Lieutenant Colonel Brehon B Somervell, newly placed in charge of the army’s $1.137 billion defense building program, orders decentralization to speed camp and cantonment work. The action comes just seventy two hours after his appointment as he seeks efficiency in construction.

A man, a woman, and the woman's two sons died when their car collided with a westbound railroad train at Washington Indiana's East Ninth street crossing. A second woman was left critically injured as the death toll in Indiana’s weekend crashes rose with multiple traffic and other fatalities.
Jess Amos was declared elected trustee of Lexington township Scott county after a circuit court contest reduced Middleton advantage from three votes in 1938 to a one vote margin. Special judge presided, attorney Edward P. Eisner represented Amos. the tally showed Middleton 368 and Amos 360. Amos has served two years of a four year term.
Shields High School music department with Seymour churches will sponsor the third annual downtown broadcast of Christmas carols from December 18 to 24. Performances run 7 30 to 9 00 nightly from the Seymour National Bank basement PA system with choirs and quartets from St Paul Lutheran First Baptist Christian First Methodist and school choruses directed by Paul Rigsbee.
Dispatch reports British forces captured Sidi Barrani in Egypt, exposing Italian supply dumps and fortifications along a 70 mile desert strip. Neatly lined wrecked vehicles, tanks, munitions, water plants, and food stocks indicate a major loss for the Italian assault. Nibeiwa fell in minutes, boosting British control. General Maletti was killed during the counterattack attempt.
Frank Richardson of Indianapolis purchased Cox s Cave eight miles southeast of North Vernon and his team found a three room entrance nine feet high, an upper chamber with narrow passages, and a natural bridge at an exit away from the mouth. The cave sits on land along the south fork of the Miscatatuck River, first patented in 1825 by Torbett under John Quincy Adams era.

Philip Maxwell, former Seymour newspaperman now with the Chicago Tribune, served as master of ceremonies at Indiana Society of Chicago’s largest annual dinner. The event drew Hoosiers from across Indiana to the Stevens Hotel and featured political satire while honoring John T. McCutcheon, a leading American cartoonist.
The regular monthly meeting of the Washington Township Farm Bureau will be held Wednesday night December 18 at 7 30 at the Dudleytown School. A Christmas program and business session are planned and a large attendance is anticipated.
