The Weather Bureau reports the longest December cold snap in state history with temperatures not exceeding 30 degrees for nine straight days in Seymour and Jackson County, confirming residents' expectations.
Paul Ponder of Seymour Alabama appeared in Jackson Circuit Court Saturday arraigned and pleaded not guilty to assault and battery with intent to commit a felony and to assault with intent to gratify sexual desire. Bond set at 2000 dollars. Trial date not yet set.
Seymour firefighters quelled a small blaze at the Pilgrim Holiness Church on East Third Street at 8 53 a m. The fire started from an overheated flue igniting the wooden wall. It caused slight damage with smoke in the rafters and two vestibules, prompting a second call at 9 14 a m for more smoke.
Dr. Russell J. Humbert president of DePauw University spoke at Wallonia Methodist Church centennial services Sunday afternoon. The program featured a sermon by Rev. Orrin Thayer a chimes prelude by Miss Anita Grider and a history by Miss Lillie Fosbrink.
Fire destroyed the home economics building at Freetown High School shortly after 7 p.m. Sunday. Three classes with about 30 students from the domestic science department moved to the main school building for classes today after the blaze.
One person, Lois Louise Jackson 18 of Paris Crossing R1, was slightly injured when her 1942 coupe collided with a 1950 coach driven by Maurice Purlee on Ind 250 east of Uniontown. Another crash involved Crothersville fire chief Dennis Mitchell. a fireman was not harmed, but a spectator, Lawrence Waggoner, fractured a leg amid a house fire at Freetown High School.
Contributions totaling 96.18 bring the 40th annual Christmas Fund to 279.18, up from 177.61 a year earlier. Campaign chairman Thomas A. Plunkett fields requests for baskets as Seymour citizens, clubs and firms aid the effort. Families seek help by writing to the Christmas Basket Fund 341 Calvin Boulevard. The toy shop at the Boys Club refurbishes toys for baskets, with Junior Optimists assisting. Several hundred toys will be ready by December 24, the drive ends December 22, and a Kiddie Show at the Majestic Theatre will close the campaign with Santa on December 24.
A loaded truck trailer burned out of control on U S 31 north of the Sand Creek bridge in Bartholomew County about 6 a.m. Fire destroyed the load and damaged the trailer after overheated wheel bearings ignited the fire. The driver, a Scottsburg man, stopped at a farmhouse. Elizabethtown fire department extinguished the blaze. Trooper John M. Roseberry investigated for Seymour post.
Five railroad employees on a work car were killed when an Azalea passenger train from Nashville struck the car from behind near Lebanon Junction Kentucky. The victims were John Brown Shep erdsville Arthur Hinton Emmett Cartwright L L Gray of Lebanon Junction and Robert McClusky of Glasgow. The incident left bodies scattered about 300 feet along the track as the train sped north toward Louisville.
President Eisenhower meets with Republican congressional leaders to discuss a domestic program including a proposed 80 billion dollar budget. The talks center on general budget problems and national security spending amid plans to curb overall outlays.
In Jackson Circuit Court, 2 p m Thursday, arguments on a motion to dismiss Cunningham petition to contest the Grassy Fork township trustee election. Cunningham, Democratic candidate, alleges irregularities after losing the recount to Republican Curtis Mellencamp, who was certified trustee elect. Mellencamp’s attorney James F. Hillis moved to dismiss. Cunningham’s Branaman and Markel filed an answer. Judge John M. Lewis set Thursday for arguments.
AP reports federal mediator Joseph Finnegan joins negotiations between the Newspaper and Mail Deliverers Union and Publishers Assn of NYC to end a six day strike. Printers offer to return to work. papers await delivery return before resuming publication. Wages cited include a $7 weekly raise over two years. basic weekly pay at $103.82 for 40 hours.
Western Big Three affirm their position on West Berlin and free access in a Berlin agreement with Britain France and the United States. They reject Soviet plans to let East German Communists control Allied traffic and say they will respond after NATO consultations. Khrushchev offers making West Berlin a demilitarized free city as the Soviet note lingers.
About 100 light bulbs were stolen from Santa's tent on the Scottsburg courthouse lawn and smashed in a nearby alley. Police suspect vandals who question Santa's judgment about who has been good this year. The tent was part of the town's Christmas decorations.
A new canine accessory shop, The Doggery, opens in Beverly Hills offering mink coats at 475 dollars and a range of dog goods from felt and wool coats to solid gold neck chains and leather collars. Owner Dick Grossman and wife Enid describe dog party catering with themed birthday cakes and party supplies.
