Heavy rain on Tuesday caused two highway accidents injuring three people, with 2.10 inches recorded by weather observer Ruth Everhart. The White River rose from 3.2 to 7.6 feet by 8:30 am as floodwaters spread across fields, while forecasters warned of more showers and possible thundershowers through Thursday.
The jury convicted Delcie Seal of reckless homicide after a 50 minute deliberation in Jackson Circuit Court. Seal, 25, of Crothersville, faced charges over the death of Bonnie Jean Atkin McClain in a September 18 car accident near Medora. Prosecutor John M. Lewis led the state, with defense by Allan H. Nierman.
William Blank, manager, announced a free children's Christmas program at the Majestic Theater Friday December 24 at 10 o'clock. The event will feature cartoons and a special children's film from a library, with theater employees donating their time to present the show.
W C Baldwin, first vice president, becomes president of the Seymour Chamber of Commerce after C R Bridges resigns to join Noblitt Sparks in Columbus. Bridges, elected to the board in 1948, will be replaced on the board at the January meeting. Baldwin will finish his term. The board votes to move the Fall Festival to mid summer around July 11 to 16 and to begin with the Horse Show. Bridges leaves after a term marked by ten major objectives he outlined last spring.
Dredging is slated to begin at Starve Hollow Lake near Wallonia by week end once a drag line arrives. The lake will remain at its current level during repairs and dredging with fishing and boating still prohibited. Berkey Wright of Driftwood state fish hatchery made the announcement. Earl Boling led the hatchery during Wright’s vacation.
Jackson County Scottish Rite Club and guests attended the annual Christmas party at the Elks Club. The Continental Trio from Indianapolis performed as club president Neal Hennessy welcomed attendees and noted that such meetings are forbidden in many places.
County totals show $3,529.65 raised for the Christian Rural Overseas Program with hopes to meet a $4,800 goal via corn and other grain converted to cash. Local elevators at Seymour and Crothersville have yielded $1,196.08. Brownstown reports $2,082.57. Township chairmen and Farm Bureau staff praised for organizing, with additional cash contributions handled by Miss Betty Goss.
A district meeting at Osgood Methodist Church drew 73 ministers and Women's Society presidents in Indiana. The event, the 14th of 17 statewide sessions, aims to recruit 300 student nurses annually for Ft Wayne Gary and Indianapolis Hospitals, led by Dr N G Talbott and Dr S L Martin with host Rev Chester Hughbanks.

About 250 Seymour school children will receive four topical fluoride treatments over three weeks after the new year. Indiana State Board of Health teams, led by Dr. Roy Smiley, will inspect children chosen by age and dental health to maximize benefit. Local dentists and officials, including Mrs. Margaret Horstman and Adolph Zollman, support the program with no cost to students.
Cootie Post No 29 plans its January 9 meeting to draft by laws and set regular meeting times. The county post, formed at a Sunday VFW club event with 75 to 80 attendees, initiated 15 members and elected L R Huckelberry as Seam Squirrel and named officers such as John Mather and Patrick Downey. The post remains open to all county VFW members.
Funeral services for Mrs. Lucille Ahl will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. from her home 1546 Hoyt avenue Indianapolis. Burial follows at Washington Park Cemetery. She died Tuesday morning at St Vincent Hospital Indianapolis. She was daughter of William H. Russell of Seymour whose funeral was held here Sunday. Born in Grassy Fork township she lived most of her life in Jackson county.
Funeral services for John T. Eglen age 92 will be held at 2 PM Thursday at the Medora United Brethren Church. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery Brownstown. Mr Eglen a longtime Jackson County resident died Monday at his daughter's home on West Laurel Street.
Seymour retail stores will stay open until 9 p.m. starting Monday December 20 to aid late Christmas shoppers. Open Monday through Thursday nights, closing at 6 p.m. Friday December 24 to allow employees Christmas Eve at home. December 25 and January 1 are observed holidays. George Laupus Jr chairs the retail policy committee which set the policy.
James Cornett 66 of Medora, Indiana, died Tuesday night at his sister’s home after about a year of illness. He was a Jackson county farmer born September 6, 1882 in Salt Creek township, son of Wesley and Elizabeth Harrell Cornett. Survived by five nieces and a nephew. funeral Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at Clearspring Church with burial in Clearspring cemetery.
The Indiana Tax Study Commission recommends an excise tax on motor vehicles and a permissive surtax on the state gross income tax to aid financially distressed cities. The excise would replace the vehicle property tax, be weight based, and due at registration with estimates of $9 million additional revenue yearly.
Albert M. Moore 66 of 409 Ewing Street died Tuesday night at Schneck Memorial Hospital after a long illness. Born November 14, 1882 in Jackson County he lived in the area most of his life. He worked at National Veneer and Lumber Co in Seymour and belonged to Crothersville Lodge No. 610 F and AM. Surviving are four sisters Zinnie Landis Hartford City Maggie Osbourne Aletha Queener and Olive Cramer all of Indianapolis. Funeral at Kovener Funeral Home Crothersville with Rev. Walter Moseley officiating burial in Crothersville cemetery. Friends may call after 6 tonight.
Shields High School's choir will perform for Seymour Lions Club members and families at the Elks Home during the club's annual Christmas dinner at 6 15 p m The program is organized by Paul W Rigsbee chair Guy R Hamlin T H Montgomery and Walter Kreinhagen The event moves ladies night to accommodate the occasion.
A House Un American Activities committee member says a report claims detailed Norden bomb sight information leaked to Soviet representatives as early as 1938. The claim notes the sight was a major U S military secret and points to leaks from the Army Aberdeen proving ground in Maryland in the late 1930s.
The Rev. Russell C. Prohl of Redeemer Lutheran Church Seymour becomes chair man of the Jackson County Mission Federation of Lutheran Churches. Other officers elected include Rev. William Breda Waymansville as vice chair man, Rev. Alvin A. Mueller Sayers as trustee, and R. H. Bartels Brownstown as secretary.

Ray H. Bower of Tipton has been appointed chief engineer of the Indiana state highway commission effective January 10. He succeeds Day F. Vogelgesang as the new Democratic administration takes over. Bower is a Purdues graduate and former district engineer who has lived in Seymour and earlier directed a local office. Changes in district personnel and maintenance assignments across six highway districts are anticipated after the commission assumes duties next month.
Leslie Arbuckle ZI Post 1925 names a committee to draft a state veterans bonus bill. The panel includes Frank Updike A Parker James Prewitt and John Mize under commander L Huckelberry. They will present the bill for reading and passage at the next meeting Tuesday night.
