Seymour Girl Killed as Car Hits Freight Train at O'Brien Crossing
A 16 year old Seymour girl, Virginia Shubert, died after the car she rode in collided with a Baltimore and Ohio freight train at the O'Brien street crossing. The driver, Margaret Hodge, 18, was injured critically and taken to Bartholomew County Hospital. The train was en route from Cincinnati to Washington at 9 39 a m. The crash occurred with the engine dragging the auto 300 feet. Police report no skid marks. The body was taken to Burkholder Funeral Home. This marked Jackson County's 10th traffic death this year and the eighth police post area fatality.

County 4 H Grain Show Winners Announced in Brownstown
Winners were announced at the Jackson County 4 H Grain Show held Saturday in the courthouse lobby. Ronald Krumme won best 30 ears of corn and Larry Kiewitt best quality peck of soybeans. Runner ups were Melvin Bishop in corn and David Klosterman in soybeans. Other placings included Lester Peters and Joe Kerkhof in corn and Melvin Bishop and Max Bobb in soybeans.

Dr. Raymond G. Haas 83 well known Seymour dentist who practiced in the city for more than 50 years died at his residence 204 South Poplar Street at 3 a.m. Sunday after six weeks illness. Funeral 2 p.m. Tuesday Burkholder Funeral Home with Dr. Stewart H. Silver and Dr. A A. Cohn officiating. Burial Riverview Cemetery. He was born February 22 1881 in Evansville son of Isaiah and Sarah Haas and was the last survivor of 11 children. He graduated from Indiana School of Dentistry in 1907 and then came to Seymour.

Pair Arrested By Trooper In Cville Saturday
A man and a youth were arrested by Trooper Jack Pike at 1 p.m. Saturday in Crothersville. James Lee Owens, 28, Paris Crossing RI, pleaded guilty in Seymour city court and was fined 15 dollars plus 20 dollars costs, with additional charges and a suspended 30 day sentence. Larry Spicer, 17, Crothersville, faced minor in possession charges, was jailed in Jackson County, and fined 10 dollars with 30 days suspended on good behavior.

About 300 people attended the dedication of Brownstown Central High School a dollar and a half million facility in Brownstown Sunday. State Superintendent William E. Wilson praised education funding and future human progress while urging the building be used to shape better lives and handle future global challenges. Hopper Receives Two to Twenty One Year Term for Kidnapping
Guy Hopper thirty of Seymour R2 was sentenced by Judge John M. Lewis to not less than two and not more than 21 years in the Indiana state prison at Michigan City for the alleged kidnapping of a sixteen year old St Louis hitch hiker northeast of Seymour last August. The case followed Hopper's amendment to rape and pending pre sentence report. Barbara Laflin of St Louis was allegedly forced into Hopper's car on U S 31 near Reddington before being released near Paris Crossing. Dewey and Evelyn Spicer pleaded guilty to permitting a child to miss school and received suspended 60 day sentences. A civil suit Winchester Hoffman vs Estate of Dailey was settled out of court.

Seymour Youth Seriously Injured in Bridge Collision
A Seymour youth, Robert W. Ellis Jr., 16, was listed in serious condition at noon after a one car crash on Rockford Road at White River Bridge. He suffered severe abdominal injuries when his 1950 auto struck a bridge beam, was rushed to Schneck Memorial Hospital and then to Indianapolis.
