Seymour Chamber of Commerce announced rules for a city and vicinity home lighting contest. Twenty six merchandise prizes donated by local merchants will be awarded, displayed at Public Service Company of Indiana on South Chestnut Street.
Funeral services are set for Cpl James R Elliott 28 at Voss Mortuary with Rev S Bastin in charge. Burial will follow in Riverview Cemetery. Elliott a Navy veteran of World War II died in a suffocation incident in a tourist cabin near Tacoma along with three other soldiers. Military and Masonic rites will be observed.
Frank Thicksten age 66 of Seymour died early today at Schneck Memorial Hospital after a two week illness. He was born January 22 1883 in Ennings county the son of Abraham and Martha Hicksten. He married Belva Reynolds Wallace October 31 1937 at Ogilville and survives with a daughter Lenora Kicksten of Indianapolis two sisters Frank Railing of Seymour and Mabel Woodnsee of Indianapolis. Funeral arrangements to be announced. Friends may call at Voss Mortuary Thursday afternoon.
The Great Atlantic Pacific Tea Company will distribute a pre holiday cash bonus totaling 2.25 million dollars on December 16 to all A and P employees nationwide with six months more service. The company previously approved 2.1 million last year.
Seymour state police radio post changes its call letters from WQFE to KSA 771. The Federal Communications Commission notified local operators and the new calls became effective Sunday at the Seymour post.
Clyde Walters Jr 20 was found guilty by a Jackson Circuit Court jury after about 90 minutes of deliberation. Judge Gossman sentenced Walters to 90 days in the state penal farm with costs and dis franchised him for one year under a special Indiana statute for under 21 felony offenders.
The Voss funeral service in Seymour marks its fiftieth year of operation founded in 1899 by Frank J. Voss. The business remains under continuous Voss family management with partners C F Walter Voss F Walter Bud Voss Thomas G Voss and Mrs Frank J Voss guiding the firm from its Tipton Chestnut origin to the current 316 North location.
Nolan Smith of Brownstown was among 12 Farm Bureau Insurance agents chosen to represent Indiana at the All-America Insurance Sales Congress in Chicago from December 11 to 15. The group, including their wives, attended as guests after qualifying by selling 65 000 in paid life insurance from August 1 to October 31, 1949. Allan B. Kline addressed the opening buffet, with state Farm Bureau officials speaking during Monday sessions and Hassil E. Schenck addressing the group after the banquet.
Charles Day 17 and Cortland R1 pleaded guilty to grand larceny charges stemming from the November 9 theft of a suitcase and clothing from a tractor-trailer in Seymour. Day received a one year sentence at the state penal farm under a statute for first felons under 21, with options for reform or indeterminate confinement.
Frank Hopewell, formerly of Hopewell city, becomes head of a new cigar division at P Lorillard Company in New York. H. A. Kent announces the change as keener competition in popular price cigars. Hopewell, previously in charge of sales, helped Old Gold reach record highs. the firm plans to double cigar sales and create seven new posts to support leaf, manufacturing, and sales integration. He is noted for promotion and sales success in the tobacco field.
Official records note Tuesday's high of 30 and low of 2.0.0. Reading at 2 Pm shows river stage at 5.2 feet.
About 50 members of the Men's Brotherhood at First Presbyterian Church attended a dinner meeting to view Kodachrome color pictures by J Ralph Thompson from his five week European air tour with the Indiana State Chamber of Commerce. James L Rogers presided. guests were welcomed, and Troop No 24 Boy Scouts attended as the church unit reopens.
A. M. Reedy, born October 3 1873 in Freetown Indiana, died December 13 in Paragould Arkansas. He taught in Freetown and Carmi before moving to Paragould to work with Paragould Wholesale Grocery. Survived by daughter Mrs John McIntosh and wife Mrs Helen Newsom. He was active in church work and previously married Minnie Birdsong.
Ruth Aberle a 16 year old girl scout disappeared Sunday in a mountain area near Kelso Washington. A seven square mile search by 500 men has found no sign of her and authorities fear she may be dead after three days without food or shelter in snow rain and freezing temperatures. Deputy Merle Bevins directs the effort and reports faltering footprints offer little clue.
Plans for a track meet of a different type were made at a western district Boy Scouts meeting in Seymour. A. L. Blevins reported a definite plan of indoor events by scouts from most troops and senior units. The meet is set for 7:30 p.m. Thursday December 29 at Shields High School girls gym with all scouting units participating and the public invited.
Postmaster Walter H. Droege urges early mailing to ensure Christmas delivery as parcel volumes spike from 8,262 to about 10,500 pieces daily. He warns of fragile boxes, recommends heavy wrapping, inner address cards, and using Air Parcel Post if needed.
The Committee for Economic Development estimated national security will cost at least 20 billion dollars annually for years. It urged civilian leadership, stronger long range security, and protection of individual freedom while warning against a militarized economy and overzealous loyalty investigations.
Mrs. Elsie Fannie Smith 63 died at her Brownstown Alabama home after an illness of more than two years and a recent heart attack. A Jackson County resident born July 27 1886 near Topeka Kansas she was a Brownstown Baptist Church member. Survived by two daughters Phyllis Wineinger Seymour and Benita Bowman Brownstown a brother Bennie Do Rinehart Brownstown a sister Anna Borders Jackson County and a half sister Hattie Perkins Long Beach California. Funeral 2 pm Friday at Brownstown Baptist Church with Rev Linwood Horne and Rev C R Lee. Burial Fairview Cemetery Brownstown. Friends may call at the Smith home east of Brownstown Highway 50 Thursday and Friday until services.
Shields Owl Martinsville basketball game tickets for Friday night went on sale today. C. H. Englehardt Shields High athletic director said adult tickets are 60 cents and available at Endicott's and Baldwin's downtown while student tickets are sold at the Shields High School bookstore.
Secretary of Agriculture Brannan told the Farmers Union Grain Terminal Association stockholders in St. Paul that net income for farmers may fall about 15 percent next year as prices farmers pay stay near record highs while farm product prices slide. He urged continued push for improved farm legislation.
Chicago reports GOP strategy leaders urge shedding Mee-Tooism and presenting a clear positive set of principles for 1950 issues. Arthur E. Summerfield says the national committee should back a policy group to decide platform details next year. The closed meeting offered no formal policy stance.

J Ralph Thompson president of Thompson Dairy Company spoke to about 175 members and guests at the Jennings County Artificial Breeders Association annual meeting in Vernon courthouse. He recounted his Europe trip with focus on dairy industry. Also addressing were Dr. R W Elrod state veterinarian and P I Hitley director of Indiana Artificial Breeders Association. Otis Ruddick presided as directors for the coming year were elected.
Reports from Sioux City indicate a devastating explosion at the Swift and Company packing plant at 11 45 a m with at least 25 dead and fears of higher casualties. Brig Gen Charles Grahl said 30 to 35 may be killed per Iowa National Guard officers as rescue workers wear gas masks to search the debris.
In Oakland California, a tank car rupture at a fertilizer plant released liquid ammonia, forcing about 1000 residents to flee as gas spread over 20 blocks. Police and fire units evacuated the area while gas masks were used to wash the streets, with several hospitalizations and a warning from Battalion Chief Thomas Dolan that the tank car could have killed everyone in the area.
Traicho Kostov former Communist vice premier of Bulgaria was convicted of treason and sentenced to death by hanging. The number two defendant Ivan Stefanov former finance minister received life imprisonment. They were tried with nine others on charges of plotting with Americans Britons and Yugoslavs to make Bulgaria a puppet of Tito's Yugoslavia.
