Downtown is dressed in Christmas decor as merchants forecast record crowds with eight days left before Christmas. Holiday displays glow in windows and shops to attract shoppers during the weekend and the days ahead.
William Meseke was elected Commander of Seymour Commandery No 56 Knights Templar at the annual election in the Masonic Temple. The slate included Theodore P. Cordes as Generalissimo and Ernest W. Sargeant as Captain General, with officers for prelate, senior and junior warden, treasurer, recorder, standard bearer, sword bearer, warder, and sentinel. Installation followed by Past Commander Charles L. Kessler and outgoing Commander Benjamin S. Shin ness assisting.
Members from Masonic Councils in nearby cities gather at Masonic Temple West Second Street tonight for Seymour Council No 38 RK and8S M. Grand officers of the Indiana Council will attend with a 6:30 pm chicken dinner and 7:30 pm degree exemplifications led by C Ploch and Herbert A Graham.
Word arrived that Thomas Perrin of Scottsburg died after about two weeks with pneumonia. He was the brother of Dr. D. L. Perrin of Seymour and well known there. Funeral arrangements will be announced later. Dr. and Mrs. Perrin went to Scottsboro upon hearing the news.
Berlin dispatch reports an express train carrying Hitler collaborator Betrebs fuehrer hit an auto in Verden at 7 p m killing thirteen passengers and injuring several others. Authorities stated the incident occurred as the train passed through the area.
Seymour Welfare Association issues an appeal citing widespread hunger and poverty. Local families face hungry children, undernourishment, cold and ill health as the community nears Christmas. Officials plead for public support to relieve dire conditions at home.
A J Elmore longtime Jackson county resident died at his Kurtz home Thursday at 3 pm from complications after an earlier operation. The retired teacher and former county assessor was born May 6 1850 aged 84 and leaves a large family. Funeral at Kurtz Church Saturday at 11 with Rev EK Pedicord officiating. Burial in Cornett Grove Cemetery.
The Seymour fire department was dispatched at about 10:30 that Thursday night to the Seymour National Bank at Second and Chestnut streets after smoke was seen issuing from the building. No fire was located and no damage occurred.
Retiring Jackson county township trustees must serve seven more days in 1935 as the new Indiana law shifts offices to the first Monday of January. Newly elected trustees assume duties then and also gain township assessor responsibilities without extra pay, with Jackson township’s assessor elected last general election.
The Duvall Players from Indianapolis presented Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn at Shields High School auditorium. The crowd packed the lower floor and balcony for an evening of laughs. Proceeds benefited Seymour health programs and local projects. Jack Duvall led the cast as Pat Finn with a professional troupe.
A report from Tsingteh said three month old Priscilla Stam, daughter of murdered American J. C. Stam and wife, was found alive and being taken to Wuhu. Government troops pursue bandits who raided Tsingteh. Stam bodies were found abandoned nearby. Authorities urge rescue efforts and deny communist involvement.
LeRoy Jordan fifty five, former Columbus board of works member, died at 304 North Pine Street at 5 00 am after illness since July. Born in Bartholomew County, he moved to Columbus four years ago. Survived by Minnie B Ghick wife, four children, two brothers, two sisters, and parents. Funeral arrangements to be announced later.
Western Independents Senators Borah of Idaho and Nye of North Dakota told 2500 to 3000 eastern Republicans that the party must be reborn by adopting constructive liberalism. They urged youth clubs and liberals to seize party machinery and reject reactionaries. money alone cannot salvage the party.
The Commerce Club endorsed a Federal Emergency Relief Administration gymnasium field house as an annex to the high school. Labor would be funded by FERA, with the community covering materials. A 2000-seat building could cost North about one third of a normally funded project.

Albert Fish, the 65 year old painter, held after posing as an employee. he confessed to kidnapping and murdering Grace Budd, whose body parts were found in woods near East Irvington. He told police in New York City how he lured the 10 year old girl and carried out the crime, ending the decade old case.
