Jackson County auditor James E. Cummings reports the November 4 general election cost the county 7419 with 14811 votes cast, a record turnout. The 40 precinct setup kept cost per vote just over 50 cents, despite higher overall spending. Expenses included salaries, meals, rent, extension cards, canvassing board, and registration.
Mrs Helen Day Clark of Seymour is among 28 new members of the Indiana University chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. A 1952 psychology graduate, she joins scholars elected for outstanding grades and top class standing. Initiation will be at a campus dinner January 12.
The Jackson County board of commissioners will meet at the courthouse on Wednesday December 24 for its final 1952 session. Claims presented will be allowed through year end and remaining business completed as officials change January 1. No claims are allowed in the January session.
The VFW and American Legion sponsor basket distribution chaired by T A Plunkett to aid families facing hardship this Christmas. Donations are funded to $150 total with more requests. baskets include food and children’s toys. The Immanuel Lutheran Choir will present the Christmas portion of Handel's The Messiah at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Immanuel Lutheran Church directed by Wal ter Pelz. Soloists include Olga Barth soprano Carol Rawlings alto George McKinley tenor Frank Blanning bass from Indiana University with George Wilson as organist.
Seymour firefighters asked residents to mail names and addresses of needy families to receive Christmas toys and gifts. About 100 families are on the list prepared with school help. Firemen have repaired and stored bicycles scooters and toy autos at the Farmers Club basement and added games funded by a wrestling show.
Sophomores lead Shields High School honor rolls for the second six weeks with nine on the high list and 19 on the regular list. A total of 82 students earned honors. seniors did not place on the high list.
Gregory of North Vernon is named one of two auto license branch managers by Secretary of State Crawford F. Parker. He will oversee the North Vernon branch. Charles V. Waltz of Williamsport is the other new appointee. The office also announced six reappointments for branch management in various communities.
The office of Dr Wm M Conner optometrist will be closed until December 18. Patients are advised to return after the noted date for services.
Earl Wilson, representative of the ninth district, in Bedford said he may resign from Congress toward the end of 1954 unless Ivan H. Morgan is ousted. He accused Morgan of failing to support him and blocking his convention role, while Morgan denied the charges and said he has no intention of resigning.
Ellis B. Gregory aged 66 a native of Wallonia died Friday morning at his Forest Hill home near Greensburg after years of illness. Born December 3 1886 he married Eva Fultz in 1915. he worked as a blacksmith in North Vernon and later a furnace repairman in Columbus. Survived by Eva four daughters three brothers one sister and 16 grandchildren. Funeral at Hostetler Greensburg 1:30 Sunday officiated by Rev. Stanley Mugridge burial Rodney cemetery calling hours after 5 this afternoon.
The Richart Clothing Store at 113 East Second street faced the third awning blaze in Seymour within a month. Fire trucks answered the 9 p m call Friday night. one awning end was ruined and heat cracked a plate glass window valued around 300 dollars. Cause is unknown per Fire Chief Tom Bryant and Charles Elkins.
Seventeen students earned places on Shields Junior High School honor rolls for the second six weeks of the school year. Eight are on the high honor roll and 39 on the regular roll. Eighth grade leads high honors with six, while seventh grade has two high honorees. Regular honors total 26 for seventh grade and 13 for eighth grade, with named students listed by grade.
South Korean troops seized Little Nori Hill after a costly clash with Chinese backed Reds. The assault, aided by Allied artillery and U.S. Patton tanks, marked the peak's sixth handover since the Chinese offensive began.
Schneck Memorial Hospital physicians and dentists hosted the nursing staff for a third annual banquet at the Elks Club on Friday night with 87 in attendance. Dr. G. R. Gillespie chaired the program, Dr. Frank B. Bard spoke, and Ralph W. Keyes delivered a reply. The group staged a humorous Night Before Christmas skit with Mr. Keyes reading, and Bettye’s Treasure Chest gifts plus Santa Claus contributed to a festive program with dancing and refreshments.
Residents of Seymour and Jackson County woke to a light snow with temperatures around 24 degrees. Mrs. Ruth Everhart, local weather observer, reported ongoing flurries and continued hazards as forecasters warned of sub freezing temperatures and no thaw in sight.
A Friday truck check at the permanent pit scales on U S 31 east of Seymour cited nine drivers for overweight conditions. Eight faced single axle overweight charges and one for operating over registered weight. Cpl. Jack Curry and Trooper Earl Brown led the operation for the Seymour state police post.
A reliable source says President Truman’s demagoguery remark damaged relations with Eisenhower, ending hopes for informal meetings. Eisenhower, back from Korea, heads to New York and may meet General MacArthur next week to hear Korea views.
A daughter named Anna Marie was born by Caesarean section Friday afternoon at Sehneck Memorial Hospital in North Vernon RI but was stillborn to Mr. and Mrs. Herman Ebbin.
In northern Indiana the IHSA and South Bend police probe high school betting on games. Lakeville High School principal Oscar Valentine and THSAA commissioner L V Phillips seek evidence. Mayor John A Scott orders the investigation after pool tickets with odds 4 to 1 to 50 to 1 surface. Frank E Allen says officials are checking for student ticket sales.
The official vote for president on November 4 reached a record 61,547,861 with Eisenhower winning 33,927,549 and Stevenson 27,311,316. Other parties totaled 308,996, Eisenhower’s plurality 6,616,233. Final figures surpassed 1940 and 1948 tallies. AP tabulation covered California, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and West Virginia. Eisenhower carried 39 states and 442 electoral votes, Stevenson nine with 89.
Owen Joseph Lustig son of Edward S Lustig of Seymour Indiana was initiated into the Delta Phi Epsilon professional Foreign Service fraternity at Georgetown University. Lustig, a 1952 St Joseph Preparatory School Bardstown Kentucky graduate, is a student in Georgetown's School of Foreign Service Diplomatic and Consular section.
Ray Hill and his wife Geraldine prepare to move with their two children to Mindanao in January. He will manage a 2,500 acre farm and teach agriculture at a school being built by the General Conference of Seventh Day Adventists in Washington DC. Surviving a Kamikaze hit in 1944, Hill says a sense of return guided his path back to the region.
