Christmas shoppers in Seymour face a brisk season with deep stock and late hours. Stores will stay open after supper until nine p.m. starting Monday to accommodate daylight workers as the city nears nine days of shopping left before Christmas. Strong gift purchases, boosted by servicemen overseas, accompany festive downtown decor and a peak in the final rush.
The Navy Department announced a relaxation of physical standards for U S Navy and Naval Reserve enlistments this week. It said many men previously rejected for minor defects will be encouraged to reapply for enlistment for the duration of the emergency and asked readers to notify eligible young men about the change.
Stewart Freeman a 42 year old steel salesman was shot to death in his hotel room. Alfred Ames Jr was charged with murder today. Detectives quoted the youth saying he intended only to frighten Freeman to stop alleged abuse of his mother but his mind may have gone blank when confronted.
Navy recruiting officials urge local men to report to the Columbus post office building office rather than Indianapolis for enlistment processing. Offices remain open as long as needed, potentially seven days a week and twenty four hours a day. Specialist ratings are available to many men meeting certain qualifications.
Walter H. Droege, Seymour postmaster, cautions Seymour and Jackson county residents to mail Christmas packages and greetings early to ensure delivery before the holiday. Advice covers insured registered mail for valuable items and money, four mail chutes at the Seymour post office, proper first class postage for greeting cards, and prepaying stamps for rural patrons to avoid delays.
Mr and Mrs Walter Grantham of Marine Drive Anderson learn from daughter Jeanne Grantham Trussel in Honolulu that she is safe. Her husband Jack Trussel a U S Navy member aboard the U S Pennsylvania at Pearl Harbor is also safe. The Granthams formerly lived near Seymour. Mrs Trussel’s mother before marriage was Miss Vera Love a Seymour figure.
The Seymour Community Choir presents Handel's The Messiah at Shields High School auditorium this Sunday at 4 o'clock. About 140 local residents will perform with two soloists from the Arthur Jordan Conservatory of Music Indianapolis and Loren McDonald of Greenwood. A free will offering supports the choir, directed by Paul W. Rigshee, with many listed choir members and soloists.
A Louisville taxi driver, Joseph Benjamin Sandmann, was jailed in Seymour as police hunt continues for a grocery store holdup crew. The investigation centers on a cab that allegedly ferried four suspects from Leota to area roads after the Ervin Wiers store robbery, with a shotgun and an army automatic reported in use. The abandoned cab was found near State Road 56 north of Scottsburg about 11:25 p.m. local time.
Amid wartime needs, Red Cross activities in Seymour intensify with more volunteers sought. A December quota shipment includes dresses bed shirts sweaters and knitted items from county workrooms and volunteers homes.

Lexington jury convicting Robert H. Anderson, a 36 year old former cafe operator and ex convict, after a 24 hour deliberation for the murder of golf star Marion Miley in her Lexington Country Club apartment on September 28. He showed no emotion as verdict was read.
