Jackson County endures a near zero night with three degree readout marking the season low since January 17 1957. Officials forecast relief by weekend as temperatures rise and the river level drops though snowfall remains in the state.
Jackson county Republican leaders led by George C. Eastin attend a Ninth District grassroots rally at the Morgan Packing Company Cafeteria in Austin. Earl Wilson Lt Gov Crawford Parker and state officials join a day of meetings with precinct leaders and a ham and beans supper with awards for long-serving committeemen. Questionnaires will gauge views for the 1958 Republican platform development.
Seymour residents face a lean holiday season as unemployment rises and fewer people can give. The Seymour American Legion drive runs through December 21 to fund food and gifts for needy families, with aid distributed on December 24 and a Kiddie Show at the Majestic Theater featuring Santa Claus.
Seymour postmaster Walter H. Droege says the Christmas mailing rush is at its peak and urges earlier mailing. Special hours on Sunday December 15 and extended windows December 16 to 23 excluding December 22, with normal hours returning December 24. A new tri colored three cent stamp for the whooping crane is available while supplies last. Air Mail urged for distant Christmas deliveries.

A public dinner honoring Mike Kreshka of the Seymour Boys' Club, moving to Gainesville, Florida on Jan. 1, is planned for Sunday, Dec. 22 at 1 p.m. at the Elks Club. Tickets must be bought by Dec. 19 from the Boys' Club, Baldwin's Drug Store, Endicott's, or any board member.
A new Voss & Sons chapel near the Voss Mortuary building on North Chestnut Street opens for public viewing Saturday 3 to 9 pm and Sunday 10 am to 9 pm. The 66 by 33 foot brick structure seats 150 with a 30 seat Family Room and 75 person overflow area plus updated heating cooling acoustics and lighting. The design features a modified Colonial exterior white pillars and multi colored glass, with remodeling of the mortuary including an arrangements room and glass office partitions. Voss & Sons is a four generation family firm led by Bud Voss president and Tom Voss a university and mortuary science graduate.

The Seymour Public Library has redecorated two rooms, including the Children’s Room and the librarian’s office. The Children’s Room features rose beige walls with a light blue area near the fireplace, a painting from Psi Iota Xi Sorority above the fireplace, and rearranged tables and shelves. The librarian’s office walls are sea green with a white ceiling and soffit, and split bamboo curtains are on order.

Re training in Red Cross First Aid procedures will be given at Donner Center in Columbus next week announced by Mrs. Constance Chris, executive secretary of the Jackson County Chapter, American Red Cross. Instructors active or inactive are invited to attend the retraining due to changes in the First Aid textbook.
New York City's subway walkout enters its fourth day amid a cold snap. Transit Authority officials warn the strike costs reach about 400000 dollars daily, with 250000 in fares and 150000 in overtime and related costs. Transit crews and commuters adapt as Mayor Wagner seeks a resolution.
Cape Canaveral observers watched a static Atlas engine test on the blow of white smoke as officials in Washington indicate a possible firing soon. The test followed two prior Atlas launches that ended in destruction after launch.
Seymour will receive a $66,694.84 tax refund from Jackson County.
