Motorists used fair, chilly weather for Christmas trips as traffic remained heavy on area highways. Two minor crashes reported near Seymour, one involving a state trooper. no serious injuries. Police caution motorists to expect continued heavy traffic and changing road conditions through the new year.
Seymour's Internal Security unit was assigned to Hugh Curry to head the first battalion including Seymour Bedford Bloomington and Spencer companies. Major Thomas W. Rufing organized the unit November 29 with Fred M. Manion as commander and Hazle A. Brooks as second lieutenant. The ISC aims to act as home guard should National Guard be mobilized.
Beginning today a Christmas Story titled The Coming of The King appears daily in The Seymour Tribune. Written by Dr. Norman Vincent Peale for his children and now published for all readers with illustrations by Valenti Angelo. The tale appeals to both children and adults, including tots who cannot read yet. The final installment runs December 24.
Temperatures in the Seymour region fell to a low of 10 degrees Sunday night as daytime highs barely reached the freezing point. Saturday saw a top of 33 and a low of 12 with continued cold, fair weather forecast into tonight and slightly warmer conditions expected Tuesday and Wednesday.
Two Seymour post office workers Roy A. Beldon and Floyd D. Warner were feted at a Sunday testimonial dinner at the American Legion Home attended by 77 post office staff and families. They received Postmaster General certificates, savings bonds, and a billfold. Warner plans to spend winters in Columbia, South Carolina with family. Beldon will retire to his farm near U.S. Route 60.
Donald Clarence Woodard 23 North Vernon R5 was charged with operating a vehicle under the influence and entered a not guilty plea. He posted $500 bond and will appear for a hearing on or before December 19. Harry Dodd sought to withdraw an earlier not guilty plea, pleaded guilty to the first count and was fined 25 dollars with costs. second count dismissed. Mirrell Harold Brewer pleaded guilty to possession of an alcoholic beverage by a minor and was fined five dollars with costs. Larry Richard Wilson pleaded guilty to public intoxication and was fined ten dollars with costs. George Ledbetter and Mrs. Ledbetter, Pershing township residents, were fined one dollar and costs for violating the school law. Nancy Mullen vs Roy B. Mullen divorce action set for trial February 1. The city council will read two sewer ordinances at tonight's 7:30 meeting. One proposes a $2.60 monthly rate for single dwellings with graduated and industrial rates, the other seeks $2,200,000 in revenue bonds to fund construction, operation, and a disposal plant to stop polluting the East Fork White River.

Seymour residents are urged to donate to the American Legion Post No 89 Christmas Basket Fund aiding needy families. James H. Lester contributed $5, raising the total to $107.15. Donations may be left with Robert H. Lucas at Seymour National Bank or The Seymour Daily Tribune office.
Cortland High School music department under Miss June Aldrich will stage its annual Christmas Concert at 7 30 PM in the Cortland High School gym. Beginning, Junior and Senior bands and the Girls Chorus perform with accompanist Miss Janet Thompson.

Williams a 31 year old Kokomo Indiana administrative assistant to Rep Beamer has been named director of the new five day Leadership School the Young Republican Federation will conduct here starting January 23 The conference aims to teach how the Young Republican organization can most effectively contribute to the Republican campaign.
City firemen extinguished two small Sunday fires within two hours. At 7:15 a blaze at Tony Trapp’s 115 West Brown Street damaged the ceiling and roof around a chimney. the cause and damage were not determined. At 9:40 a roof fire at Carl Strietelmeier’s 642 East Fourth Street was sparks from the roof with no damage estimate.
Tuberculosis patch tests were given today to kindergarten first and eighth grade students in Seymour along with Shields Junior High eighth graders and Seymour Redding students. Tests will be read on December 6 as part of the county program funded by Christmas seals.
Ruth Marie Hillin, 26, a house guest, was arraigned in Municipal Court on kidnapping charges for taking 13 month old Georgia Carol Waltz from Evelyn McLaughlin's home on December 1. The child was unharmed after a 10 day journey through Indianapolis Columbus Louisville and Detroit before being returned to her mother.
Jackson County agricultural agent Edward A. Ragsdale and assistant agent Richard Duncan were named to two committees at the Purdue conference. Ragsdale begins a fifth one year term on the Boys Policy committee, while Duncan joins the 1956 Rural Youth committee. The four day session at Lafayette featured remarks by E W Allen of the U S Department of Agriculture and noted progress in older youth work and rural leadership development.
Israeli forces launched a night assault along an eight mile front against four Syrian outposts near the Sea of Galilee killing 55 Syrians and taking 29 prisoner while suffering twelve Israeli wounded. UN observers rushed to the scene as fighting subsided.
President Eisenhower convened with Republican congressional leaders in Washington for a preview of his State of the Union message. The session aimed to outline administration plans, with a focus on peace and prosperity, farm price support, and potential compromises on highway and budget issues.
An emergency board urged Washington to grant about 16 cents an hour plus health and welfare benefits to roughly 750000 nonoperating railroad workers such as clerks telegraph and maintenance staff. The raise would take effect December 1 and come via management assuming full health plan costs, while current wages average 1.78 dollars per hour.
Mrs. Goebel Duncan of Kentucky and four brothers attend the Gibson county circuit trial of Leslie Irvin for the December robbery murder of Wesley Kerr at Franksville. The state shows Kerr was shot in the back and a bullet was linked to Irvin's innocence challenged by the defense.
