Seymour Post 59 American Legion resumes the Santa Claus Christmas fund to aid underprivileged children in Seymour. Treasurer Schierling will again oversee donations at American Security Company with daily contributor lists in The Daily Tribune. Funds buy toys nuts and candy for local families ahead of Christmas.
The Rev. James Daniel Martin, longtime pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Lebanon for thirteen years, has accepted the pastorate of Hutchison Memorial Church in New Albany Indiana and plans to move there with his family on December 19. The Lebanon church has prospered under his leadership though the congregation is described as dispersed since his arrival of Mrs Martin in November 1927.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at Barker Funeral Home in Anderson Indiana for Charles Downing aged sixty nine who died of a heart attack Monday afternoon. Burial was in Tipton Indiana. Survived by son Hugh Downing Sylvania Ohio daughter Elsie Derr Anderson and brother A J Downing near Tampico. He had lived with his brother then returned to spend winter with his children in northern Indiana. A large number of relatives and friends mourn his passing.
Qualified individuals in multiple Indiana counties may file for old age and survivors insurance benefits at the New Albany field office regardless of prior employment location. Jerome Reed notes workers have believed they must file where employed, causing delays and expenses. A representative visits Seymour on the first and third Thursdays, 10 am to noon. next visit December 19.
Coulter M. Montgomery announced Legion Christmas activities groups assign chairmen and members for toy collection, sorting, repair and painting. Subscriptions led by Walter Voss and Louis Cordes. Special entertainment by T. T. Montgomery and George Laupus. Sorting and boxing by Tom Plunkett. Distribution by William Topie. baskets to be delivered on Christmas morning. Volunteers at city recreation center assist with toy repair and painting.
Mrs. Emily Schrader aged sixty nine of Jackson County died at 4 50 am at 124 East Ninth Street after a month long illness with complications. Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday at 3 30 pm from Tower Funeral Home with burial in Mt Healthy Cemetery. She leaves three children Cela Carpenter Seymour, Elsie Meyer Columbus, Louis Schrader at home, and five stepchildren along with two brothers, a sister and several relatives.
Harvard astronomer Dr. Fletcher Watson told the American Academy that the Cumberland comet will stay at least 55 million miles from Earth though its tail will approach. He noted that earth could pass through the tail without danger and recalled Halley’s 1910 tail event as harmless. The comet should become naked-eye visible around December 16 and reach its nearest approach mid January.
AP reports one of the last crew messages from the United Airlines crash near Chicago Municipal Airport noted icing. Investigators opened hearings into the disaster that killed about 100 and injured six as John M. Becker testified he advised landing on the northwest runway and the crew said they must circle to clear ice from the windshield.
Associated Press report from New York dates December 1 quotes Philip B Fleming wage and hour administrator warning industrialists that enforcement of the act is certain. In a speech to the National Association of Manufacturers about the 40 hour week and minimum wage, he urged compliance and warned inspectors would be around.
Nighttime blazes destroyed a garage at 110 South OBrien Street and a 1937 Woodrew sedan owned by Jeptha Lewis and stored tools. A shed at 200 South Pine Street burned as bales of paper fed the flames. Insurance covered losses. Firemen battled flames but could not save the structures.
Mrs. Clarence Mavity 57 mother of Mrs. Mildred Fleming chief operator for Indiana Telephone Corp died at her home near Paoli Wednesday night after a period of illness. She is survived by her husband and three daughters. Funeral arrangements were to be conducted Friday at Paoli.
Walter Vehnekamp, twenty six, was arrested in Crothersville and is being held at Johnson County jail for arraignment on a vehicle taking charge. Detective Raymond Boll and Corporal Harry McMillin of the Seymour state police post assisted in the arrest. He allegedly took a car in Franklin where he had been employed.
The Seymour Lions club holds its regular weekly dinner meeting tonight at 615 ofelock in the ding room of the Kiks Tome. Murray is chairman of the program committee for this month.

In Marion Indiana the buildings that once housed the Indiana Truck Corporation were purchased by the Adame Machinery Company of Chicago. Interstate Machinery Company of Chicago sold the property for about $30,000. The equipment was sold to several bidders for an aggregate of 40 000 dollars.

Lord Lothian, in a Baltimore speech read for him, urges fuel and food shipments, naval support, and planes to help Britain avoid defeat. Officials weigh whether this signals broader U S help or just commerce and escort support.
Dr S J Martin announces a settlement day at First Methodist Chapel Columbus for Methodist leaders from Columbus district. Dr Robert Brown of Wa Hee China hospital will speak at 10 am Monday, followed by Dr Gay Carpenter of Indianapolis district at 1 30 pm. Dr Brown, a 25 year hospital head, will also address a mass meeting at 7 0 0 o'clock.
A freighter crew aboard a New Orleans to the Orient voyage plans a cooking contest to decide if the chief cook keeps his job. The crew complains about excess tripe while the second cook will cook next, and the crew will choose the outcome.
A federal jury tries ten leaders of the 1 Am movement on mail fraud charges as defense objected to evidence a 1935 letter signed by Guy W Ballard and his wife claims a portrait of Christ by Charles Sindelar is a real likeness. The letter describes Jesus appearing to Sindelar and guiding the painting. The article continues on page 6.
The Civil Aeronautics Administration releases a 40 million dollar program to improve takeoff and landing facilities at 200 sites nationwide including Hawaii and Alaska. Col. Donwlhd TH Connolly, CAC administrator, says funds will build needed facilities for national defense. Work includes clearing, pruning, grading, drainage, and paving.

Junior Chamber of Commerce Seymour held its regular meeting Wednesday night at the Elks Home on West Second Street. President W B Greemann reported on a state directors meeting in Indianapolis last Sunday. The group discussed home rule and noted no dinner meeting this month due to Christmas. The January meeting will feature the annual election of officers.

Lord Lothian, Britain's ambassador to the United States, died early today at age 58 after a illness that began Sunday. He fell ill during his stay in Washington and had appeared to recover before a relapse. The envoy had a prominent role in promoting American aid to the Allied war effort and had long served in government since 1916, earning the regard of diplomatic circles.
The FBI reportedly concluded the Hercules Powder Company disaster at Kenvil New Jersey was not sabotage though exact cause remains undetermined. The September 12 blast killed at least forty seven and destroyed the smokeless powder production division where over 100 tons of explosive were being made.
The army plans a January push to recruit 61 000 men for three year terms to expand the air corps and auxiliary units. Regular three year enlistments will join the air arm under current plans while Selective Service troops receive less technical training in other army branches.
