Seymour Rotary Club announced its annual boys Christmas party will be held next Tuesday at 12:15 PM at the Elks Home on West Second Street. D. L. Coy led the meeting with three new members sharing brief life resumes and praise for Seymour.
The state department of Public Welfare announces an examination for the senior visitor position in Jackson County Welfare Department. It aims to establish employment lists and allows eligible current staff to advance from junior to senior visitor. Applications due by 5 pm December 18 1939 at the county welfare office or 141 South Meridian Street Indianapolis.
The Seymour Legion Post urges donations to buy gifts candy and nuts for local children in need this Christmas. With only 35 collected and a 250 goal the committee seeks funds to cover toy baskets and confections as area families await aid. Contributions may be left with Mr. Schierling at American Security Company and donors will be acknowledged in the paper.
Sey mour Chapter No 85 Royal Arch Masons elected Bruce K Combs Excellent High Priest for 1940 with G C Cline as King and Elmer C Lory as Scribe. J P McMillan and H Hodapp reelected treasurer and secretary as officers appointed include L H Becker and G Martin. Grand Lecturer Herbert A Graham will visit January 30. Meetings January 8 and inspections planned at Six Mile Lodge Hayden.
George Boland of Columbus was treated at Schneck Memorial Hospital for a leg cut from a Sunday morning car crash near Seymour. He later was moved to Bartholomew County Hospital with blood poisoning after a severed artery above the knee. Boland worked as a pin boy at Recreation Alleys on Fourth Street and police investigated the crash on State Road 9 near the Seymour junction.
New Jersey speech by Secretary Ickes targets Republican hopefuls for the presidential nomination while urging a third term for Franklin D. Roosevelt. He cites a supposed starvation crisis in Ohio and attacks from Dewey Taft Bricker and Vandenberg, listing Gannett as a hesitant favorite-son figure.
Scoutmasters and assistants from the Seymour district Hoosier Hills Area Council met Monday night at Lt. Frost cabin on White River northeast of Seymour. Led by Stanley P. Meenach, Madison scout executive, they planned a May camporee and a possible miniature Seymour event, plus other scouting topics over a chili supper.
The Rev. C. W. Burkart of St. Ambrose Catholic Church lectured at Shields High School on war’s two faces. He warned that while war can be a defense of homeland it brings tragedy and questions about greed and religion. Elizabeth Feaster introduced him as the choir led Christmas carols andLeadership honors were awarded to Freshman Home Room 101.
Henry G. Waggoner of the Chicakeith Tribe was chosen as vice-president of the Tri County Association of Red Men at a Columbus meeting. John Jewell was elected president and Irvin Kuhne secretary treasurer. Ten of eleven tribes from Jackson Bartholomew and Jennings counties attended. Jewell to lead a committee drafting a calendar of monthly meetings. Social hour followed with refreshments.
Charles R. Walgreen died at sixty six after months of illness. He began as an $18 a week clerk and bought his first Chicago store in 1902, paying off debt in four years. From one shop he built a chain of about 500 stores across 39 states with yearly sales near 50 million dollars.
A House committee hearing revealed internal dissension at the National Labor Relations Board. William Leiserson questioned colleagues and staff in memoranda describing delays, "amateur detectives," and a "stupid nonsense" view of regional officials. He cited practical administration and relied on Madden for legal checks.
Hollywood mourns film legend Douglas Fairbanks Sr who died in Santa Monica at his Beach home from a heart attack. He was 56, survived by widow Lady Sylvia Ashley and brother Robert, as son Douglas Jr. was en route.
