The Jackson County United Fund reports 1968 contributions and pledges total 99 023 dollars, only 972 dollars short of the 99 995 dollar goal. A second fundraising push is planned as several area businesses have yet to contribute and committees urge prompt commitments.
Sheriff Harold O. Croquart announced new heads for the Seymour Brownstown and Crothersville license bureaus set to take effect mid January. Mrs. D Billings Swain leads Seymour, Mrs. Claribelle Horton runs Brownstown, and Mrs. Glen Tom Prince heads Crothersville. Current managers will step down after eight years in January. The bureaus close January 11 for auditing and reopen January 14. precinct committeemen have state job applications available, mostly effective in spring.
Seymour Jaycees announce a fifth annual outdoor Christmas lighting contest with religious and general categories. Two winners receive $25 savings bonds each and public recognition. Entry is open to Seymour city and nearby areas. entrants send name and address to Post Office Box 201. Judging after dark on Friday night December 20, with Walter Zschiedrich as contest chairman.
Seymour hosts the first youth water safety council under Red Cross Water Safety program leadership by Miss Nancy Endicott. The pilot group plans spring and summer activities and will contact 90 Red Cross chapters to recruit youth members while offering guidance to new councils formed statewide.
Christy Huber of Freetown Brow nstown Central High School senior is named 1969 Jackson County DAR Good Citizen by Fort Wallonia Chapter. Papers of Beth Smith Janet Lewis Linda Eastin and Donna Bischoff were also judged and Christy will advance to state competition. Christy is BCHS National Honor Society president and active in many clubs. She is daughter of Russell and Mrs. Huber and member of Grace United Methodist Church. Last year’s county winner also came from BCHS.
Jackson County commissioners will open sealed bids at 10 a m Monday in Brownstown courthouse for lumber including oak options, weed and brush sprays, grader blades, heavy equipment parts for specific brands, blacktop patching mixes, liquid asphalts, gravel or stone in place per ton, and county home supplies for quarter ending March 31 1969. Bids require 10 percent bond and right to reject all bids.
Downtown Seymour noon temperature is unofficial while all other readings come from Mrs. Ruth Everhart government observer at Rockford. The record lists today’s official downtown noon maximum and Tuesday’s minimum along with river stage at 7 am. Sunset is 5 21 EST and sunrise Thursday is 7 55 EST.
The Seymour 50th annual Christmas Basket Fund, co sponsored by American Legion Post No. 89 and the Daily Tribune, reached $195.31 after four days from 28 donors. Funds buy toys and food baskets for needy Seymour families with more contributions urged through LeRoy Pollett at Seymour National Bank or Daily Tribune office.
Police photography and officer responsibilities under the mandatory vehicle inspection law will be covered in a training session here and in Bloomington. Local law enforcement from the Seymour District's eight county area will participate on Thursday and Friday.
Maurice Robbins the Republican candidate for Huntington County treasurer considers a second recount after the recount board declared him the loser by nine votes, overturning the initial certification showing a 19 vote margin in favor of Robbins over Democrat Albert Fulton.
Tom G. Voss resigns after 11 years on the Seymour Public Library and Jackson County Contractual Library boards. Seymour city council will appoint a successor for the remaining term. Holiday hours set with early closings December 24 26 and December 31 January 2. Committees name officers for the coming year.
Seymour board of zoning appeals approved a special use permit for Lloyd and Esther George to operate an upholstery shop as a home occupation at 516 West Laurel. The vote on each criterion was 6 to 0 in favor after a public hearing. Attorney Edward Elsner noted a rear addition to the small building. no one spoke against the request.
Beginning in January 1968 IRS representatives will aid local taxpayers with tax computations. Schedule shows visits to Seymour post office by IRS supervisor W. H. Pettinger from 8:00 to 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. on January 10 February 7 March 7 and April.
