Snowfall over the weekend totaled two inches bringing the season total to 14 inches. Roads remain passable except for three closed by high water. High water risks persist on the White River and Ohio River flood threats linger south.
Dr and Mrs Paul Schneck and their young daughter escaped serious injuries after a collision in Dillsboro Sunday morning. An auto turned into a crossroad in front of the Schneck vehicle. police filed charges against the turning driver. The Schnecks were returning to Cincinnati after visiting relatives. Mrs Schneck suffered a forehead cut. Dr Schneck is a resident physician at Good Samaritan Hospital.
A ninth district Veterans of Foreign Wars meeting is scheduled for Sunday December 17 in Seymour. Commander Clarence O Lurvey of the local post announces the gathering at 1 30 PM in the community room of the Seymour National Bank building with state leaders William Cox Carl Miller and Clyde Brick Miller in attendance. Ladies of the auxiliary will serve dinner after 11 30 AM at the VFW post home on Jeffersonville avenue.
First Methodist Church hosts Family Night on Wednesday December 13 starting at 6 30 with a pitch in supper in the dining room. A Christmas Program Santa s Vacation by the Junior Choir directed by Mrs Dale Patrick with piano accompaniment by Mrs Edward Turpin follows.
Recount of Driftwood township north precinct votes from the November 7 election shows Francis J. Grider 182 and Leslie R. Morgan 170 for trustee. South precinct favored Morgan by 15, giving him the township edge. Recount commissioners Dean White John Isaacs and Stanley Lahrman oversee the process in Brownstown.
The Ralph B Applewhite Auxiliary No 50 USWV was hosted by Ralph B Applewhite Camp No 74 United Spanish War Veterans at Edwin H Millers home in Ewing Sunday. A 21 member turkey dinner followed by gifts and decorations reflected the Christmas season despite bad roads and snow.
Shields High School will host a journalism convocation at 10 15 Tuesday led by the journalism department headed by Mrs Margaret Evans. Three candidates will be initiated into Quill and Scroll with Janice Linke presiding as president and Mary Jeannette Fenton and Barbara Fill Sonia Steward in charge. A skit by Linke will depict preparing the Shields Owl for publication.
Girl Scouts from Central Christian Church troop led by Miss Joan Pearsey distributed coin boxes and posters for the Tuberculosis Christmas Seal sale in Seymour's downtown area. Scouts were Alice Plummer Bettty Jones Edwina Blumer Nancy Beldon Linda Henderson and Sandra Reed. The Jackson County Tuberculosis Association reports total seal and bond drive receipts of 1904.90 with a county goal of 5300, down from last year’s pace. Shields High School newspaper The Shields Owl participated in the 14th annual School Press Project with editor Mary J. Fenton and advisor Mrs. Margaret Evans, publishing three tuberculosis and seal sale articles on page 8.
Coroner Ralph Dodd of Jennings county plans an accidental death verdict for Leroy Campfield 38 whose body was found in a creek west of North Vernon. Campfield apparently fell from a footbridge Friday night while returning home and may have suffered a dizzy spell due to heart trouble. The body was found by son Jack Campfield eight and neighbor Jerry Derringer while coasting. No foul play suspected. Campfield survived by widow Mary and six children.
Official and unofficial temperatures reported for Seymour today. Downtown thermometer shows 2 p m reading as unofficial. Readings from Ruth Everhart records include official maximum and minimum, precipitation 0.06 inch, snow 1 inch, and river at 10.5 feet.
The Military Order of Cooties plans its next Grand Council of Administration meeting for mid March in Seymour. Seymour members John W. Mize Jr., John Cordell, and Clarent O. Lurrey attended along with other officials from Indiana Pup Tents. Saturday's events included films from prior Grand Council programs and the Seventh Supreme district gathering in Batesville, plus coverage of Veterans of Foreign Wars Day at the State Soldiers' Home in Lafayette.
Weekend road slickness led to a few minor crashes on U S Route 50 and at a Wallonia street intersection. Er nest Fish of Columbus and Mrs. William H Bowen of Columbus were involved in a rear collision on a hill east of Brownstown with about 100 dollars in total damage. Trooper Frank B Gray investigated.
Thirteen Asian and Middle East nations met behind closed doors to draft a new Korean peace plan. They plan to submit it to the UN assembly’s political committee. Sir Benegal Rau led the effort amid no word from the Chinese Communists on halting at the 38th Parallel. The plan reportedly calls for a cease-fire and a demilitarized buffer zone along with the 38th Parallel. The United States has refused to recognize Peiping as a legitimate government and may not alter this stance for talks.
The Bethel A. M. E. Church in charge of a Christmas dinner program seeks donations to provide free meals for disabled and elderly residents on Christmas Day. Rev. Edgar F. Maddox and Mayor Donald L. Heiwig announced plans after feeding 300 people at Thanksgiving.
Mrs. John Beickman, 77, longtime Brownstown resident, died at her home after three years of ill health. Her death was unexpected. She and husband, who survives, planned their 50th wedding anniversary for January 3. They were married at Wegan Church on January 3, 1901.
Ten Shields High School students were added to the honor roll for the six weeks period, bringing total honorees to 62. Sophomores Sonya Ballard and Joan Martin made the high honor roll. others on the regular honor roll include Rufus Burke, Joe Franke, Georgia Allen, James Ahlbrand, Barbara Taulman, Robert Kendall, Rachel Browning, and Beth Ann Ogan.
Legion Post-Tribune Fund plans a free Christmas party at the Majestic for Seymour children in need. Contributions grow daily from individuals and groups. Food baskets and toys will be provided, each tailored to family needs, with support from several lodges and local businesses.
Lt Col F P Henderson says the First Marine Division broke from Changjin reservoir to Hamhung plain after a brutal 32 mile descent. Observers note a marked drop in Chinese pressure and claim thousands of Chinese attackers were annihilated while Marine casualties ran high.
Police investigated multiple weekend accidents on slick city streets. Donald C. Clark's 1939 coach on Ewing collided with Emery V. McKinney's 1935 sedan. damages were about 125 and 50 dollars respectively. McKinney was charged with operating under the influence and fined 61.75 dollars with 90 day driving rights suspension recommended. Early Saturday night a 1941 model affected the next incident.
Oscar G. Price 72 a Seymour native and longtime Columbus resident died Saturday after a hip fracture from a fall. Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. Tuesday at Hathawa Funeral Home with Rev. William Laws officiating. Burial will be in Columbus city cemetery. Survived by widow Kathryn Weller Price son Robert W Price of Indianapolis daughters Mrs Irving Buckminster of Columbus and Miss Marjorie Ann Price Reno Nev sister Mrs Lewis Sebastian Indianapolis. He had worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad and later ran a Columbus furniture store and held posts at First National Bank Columbus Milling Co and Columbus Beverage Co. He spent most of his life in Columbus.
President Truman convened senior home front economic advisers at the White House for a 3 p.m. CST meeting to discuss possible emergency proclamations and stringent controls. Attendees include W. Stuart Symington, Alan Valentine, Michael V. DiSalle, Cyrus Ching, and Price administrator officials as plans for wage and price stabilization proceed.
Congressman Earl Wilson of Bedford ninth district was reelected after spending 5953 97 in the election. The largest single item was 3000 for postage and 397 50 went to the state Republican Central Committee. Prohibition candidate Rev Elmer D Riggs spent 66 cents including 52 cents for postage and 14 cents for envelopes.
The First Marine Division suffered heavy casualties in Korea as Marines broke out of a Chinese trap near Changjin reservoir. General MacArthur visited front lines, noting the UN command remains unbeaten and able to fight. Evacuation of the 10th Corps in the northeast remained undecided amid ongoing operations near Hungnam.
Paul D. Amos of 726 North O'Brien street died early today at Madison after a two year illness. Born January 28, 1912 in Crothersville he was a machine operator for Arvin Industries. Survived by wife Bernice Ferguson Amos six children mother and widow a brother sister and grandmother Funeral arrangements to be announced.
General Douglas MacArthur said during a flight back from Korea that allied forces were in excellent shape with high morale and effective battle performance. He noted no explicit reference to Chinese forces but acknowledged heavy enemy reinforcements and ongoing dangers.
