Seymour common council approves rezoning along U. S. 50 from industrial and suburban to roadside business paving the way for more highway commerce. Mayor Isaacs defends finances citing a state order to cut next year’s budget by about 150000 and outlines next year’s operating funds.
Crothersville Chamber of Commerce met Monday to discuss town problems including inadequate lighting and the need for improved water and sewer systems. Vandalism at Crothersville School alarmed members, while bells were added to Christmas decorations. Next meeting set for January 13, 1964.
Weather Bureau warns of renewed snow, freezing rain or sleet tonight with lingering snow through Wednesday and possibly Thursday. Temperatures near freezing by day and in the 20s at night, with light snowfall totals to date and slippery streets in Seymour. White River at Rockford rising to .4 of a foot at 7 am.
A Seymour Christmas parade sponsored by the Lions Club will start at the Elks Club at 7 p.m. proceeding east on Second Street and north on Ewing to the Standard Grocery lot. Joan Vest, a 12 year old from Scottsburg, will perform on a Tangley calliope mounted on a large decorated pickup, then offer a parking lot concert and a mobile encore. Santa will distribute treats as the parade closes.
Two 15 year olds Edward Joe Jarrett and Donald Ray Koerner admitted at least ten burglaries in the Seymour area and theft of two vehicles. They pleaded guilty to second degree burglary and vehicle taking and were sentenced by Judge John M. Lewis to six months at the state farm plus one to ten years at the reformatory with probation. A third youth is implicated in two burglaries and held in juvenile detention.
The 45th annual Christmas Basket Fund drive in Seymour began with $18 raised on opening day. Sponsored by Seymour American Legion Post No 89 and the Seymour Daily Tribune, the fund provides food and toys for needy Seymour families before Christmas. Contributions support baskets assembled by volunteers and distributed to families, with requests handled by mail to Pollett or the Daily Tribune.
The Seymour Zoning Appeals Board will meet at 7:30 p.m. at City Hall instead of December 24 due to Christmas Eve. Walter Findley seeks a variance to build a 40 by 80 foot box assembly plant west of Rockford, enlarge his sawmill, and erect a 50 by 50 foot sawdust incinerator. A continued hearing on an illuminated sign at 604 East Sixth Street is also planned.

Cortland Eagles basketball player Kenneth Johnson age 17 and two other teens were treated for minor injuries at Schneck Memorial Hospital. Johnson sustained finger and nose injuries during Cortland Invitational play, admitted briefly for X rays then released. Jerry Zike, 18, fractured his left wrist at a skating rink, reduced and cast, discharged. Barbara Oberman, 13, suffered a left elbow injury after slipping on an icy porch and was released after X rays.
A Marion County grand jury indicted State Fire Marshal Ira J. Anderson and Indianapolis Fire Chief Arnold Phillips for neglect of duties in the Indiana State Fair Coliseum blast that killed 72. Five others linked to bottled propane gas face involuntary manslaughter charges. four others named in the manslaughter indictments include Melvin T. Ross Edward J. Franger Fred J. Helms Richard Ensign and Floyd James. The panel urged overhaul of the Fire Marshal's department and noted the law was not the sole cause of the disaster.
Studebaker Corp lost 40 million dollars since 1959 and will halt auto production in the United States. The South Bend plant will close within two weeks, with Canada’s Hamilton plant continuing. Avanti production ends. some stamping and engine work may continue at South Bend. severance and pension provisions were noted.
James Daniels 49 of Wallonia sustained chest injuries after losing control of his 1953 coach on icy Indiana 135 and hitting a utility pole. While he was en route to Schneck Memorial Hospital, a second car driven by John Carl Hamilton rear ended the wrecked vehicle, causing minor injuries to Hamilton. Daniels remained in fair condition with X rays pending. damages were about 500 dollars to Hamilton’s 1963 sedan, with Daniels' car a total loss.
