Snow flurries kept Seymour streets icy this morning as melting snow froze into slick patches. State highway crews spread chemicals overnight and reported clear major highways outside town. Engineer James H. Rice said traffic moved normally on I 65, U S 50, and U S 31, with ice breaking up on a stretch of U S 50 near the Medora Knobs. More snow flurries were forecast for tonight.

Two Seymour youths plead guilty to burglary and theft

Special Medora Town Board Sets December 30 Meeting
Medora town board designated Monday night December 30 as a special session to liquidate outstanding debts from 1963. Mrs. Gerald White says the board will address small year end debts and consider bids for a new water well pump next year. Regular members present were Charles T. Plummer Maurice G. Davis and Mrs. White with Bruce Markel Jr as town attorney.

Jackson Circuit Court proceedings included several defendants in contempt and criminal cases. Garland Webber received 90 days in jail and costs for civil contempt over non payment of support. Richard Graves pleaded guilty to non support and received a $1 fine plus six months at a penal farm suspended on payment terms. Mose Bradford pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of a property damage accident and public intoxication, with fines and six months at a penal farm suspended if damages are paid within 60 days. O E Underwood’s fraudulent check case was reset due to defendant disability to March 11, 1964. The grand jury panel was ordered to appear to hear the Noble Turn case.

Volunteers Extinguish 10 Acre Brush Fire Northeast of Seymour
About 35 volunteers from Redding Township Volunteer Fire Department battled a brush fire Saturday afternoon burning over 10 acres of land north east of Seymour. The fire damaged shrubbery on the Harold Ruddick and Ivan Haskett properties with undetermined origin and minimal property damage reported.

Girl Killed in Weekend Crash Near Vernon Indiana
Norma Jean Fitch an 18 year old girl died from a broken neck and severe concussion when the car she rode in wrecked at the junction of Ind 3 and 7 two miles south of Vernon Jennings County. James Neal McGannon 26 and Roy Stidham 22 were injured passengers. McGannon was admitted then transferred for specialist care. Stidham treated and released. Police officers investigated the crash noting McGannon lost control on a hill and struck a highway sign. The incident tied December traffic death records for the area with three deaths that month. A second crash occurred on U S 50 near Hangman Turn.

Lightning likely causes Pan American 707 crash near Wilmington
Expert investigators searched for proof that a lightning strike brought down the Pan American World Airways Boeing 707 en route from Puerto Rico to Philadelphia. Eighty-one people perished as the jet disintegrated in a fiery fall near the Maryland Delaware border after being in a holding pattern at New Castle Airport. Witnesses reported a bright flash and two arched lightning bolts before the sky lit up and debris rained down over a four square mile area. Authorities recovered some wreckage and noted the flight recorder was not found.
