A slow warmup turns ice coated streets to soup with higher temps through the weekend. Four local roads closed by high water and drifting snow in hills. White River at 15.4 feet and receding. flood level 15.5 feet. Temperatures 12 to 20 degrees and near normal 26 to 44 in five days.
A joint session of the Evangelical United Brethren churches in Freetown will be held Monday night December 11 at 7 o clock. Rev Homer J Hunsinger of the Congregational Christian Church will speak and religious films will be shown.
Nina May Boswell daughter of Charles Boswell Cortland Indiana made the Transylvania College midquarter Honor Roll in Lexington Kentucky with a 3.66 GPA. She is a Cortland High School graduate and a junior majoring in English and a member of Lambda Omega Sorority and AWS.
Fire Chief Tom Bryant blamed pennies found behind fuses for a Thursday afternoon house fire at Everett Booker 905 West Oak Street. A short in wiring sparked in a wall board ceiling. firefighters removed the ceiling and the blaze caused no further damage after pennies were uncovered behind both fuses.
The Jackson County Production and Marketing Administration completes its organization with Will R. Isaacs as county PMA chairman for the 12th year and Dean W. White as vice chairman. In Jackson and Grassy Fork townships elections were held after weather delays with multiple officers and alternates chosen.
Erwin Surenkamp announces final preparations for Immanuel Lutheran Sunday School Christmas program to be held Sunday December 17 at 7 30 p m. The show features songs and recitations by children ages three to six and includes a sound film The Guiding Star. Final practice is scheduled for 2 00 p m on December 17.
Charles G. Hunterman spoke at the Seymour Lions Club meeting at the Elks Club. He described his Asia postings and work with General Stilwell training Chinese Nationalist troops. The program included membership certificates for Joe Berry Ted Hitch and Roger Praedl and news of the 25th anniversary observance on December 28 with Melvin Jones as guest speaker.
Seymour firefighters battled wind and subfreezing temperatures for nearly five hours at the Seymour Manufacturing Company 500 North Broadway. Officials estimate 3000 to 5000 in damage and say the fire started between layers of a double roof in the southeast part of the plant. Henry Lange, night watchman, reported the fire shortly before 9 p.m. and crews fought the blaze using multiple lines and the city’s new quad apparatus. The fire affected a one story section adjoining a two story area, with water directed at the roof to prevent spread. Fire under control just before midnight, with work continuing until about 2 a.m. Officials moved inflammable materials away from danger as teams worked.
North Vernon Exchange Club pushes for traffic signals at the State Roads 3 and 7 intersection with U S 50 and the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. A committee of John Miller A E Siener and Leslie Helm will meet with the city council to discuss a plan involving the city state highway commission and railroad to install electric signals and railroad crossing flashers with minor city costs. John Matthews elected club president with officers Carl Elster vice president Tom Bitler secretary and Roger Helm treasurer. Board of control members named Vance Collins L E Williams George Pearcy and Robert Roseberry.
A Tribune ad proving its pull. The Paris Style in Paris, Tennessee, advertised Sun vali and Comfi winter head gear on November 30. A coupon in the ad led Mrs Henderson M Baker of 319 West Market Street, Dyersburg, Tennessee, to order two soft winter hats.
The Coffee Club increases Christmas relief with a $183.50 boost from many donors listed by name. The appeal notes Seymour families will face disappointment without gifts and urges contributions via the Legion Post-Tribune Fund, directing readers to page 4 column 2.
The Rev. Charles L. Brooks of United Christian Missionary Society will speak at Central Christian Church Sunday during Woman's Day observances. Morning worship starts at 10 15 with the church choir directed by E O Star offering special music.
Rescuers await return of flood waters before resuming search for Robert L. Judge 22 of Indianapolis a signalman for the Pennsylvania Railroad who drowned Thursday when he slipped from a snow covered trestle into the White River northwest of Rockford. The river remains over flood stage and swift complicating the effort with risk of downstream drift.

Officials of Redding township will meet on Tuesday night, December 19, to consider emergency appropriations including 600 in the tuition fund and 300 500 200 and 1000 in the special school fund. Taxpayers may be heard.
The Commerce Department banned American ships and planes from carrying strategic materials to Communist China or Soviet Europe and to Hong Kong and Macao. The ban applies to weapons, fissionable materials and strategic goods moved between points outside the United States and is effective immediately. Licenses are not granted for shipments to China.
David Hogg a Fort Wayne attorney was guest speaker at the Agoga Class Christmas banquet in the Fellowship Center First Baptist Church. About 100 Agogas plus wives and friends attended as a marimba band from Westport provided music and group singing accompanied the dinner hour.
Mrs Ada Belle Eacret 63 of Seymour R4 died early today at Schneck Memorial Hospital after 11 days of illness. Born February 25 1887 in Dade County Missouri she was the daughter of the late Alfred W and Mary Elizabeth Shank Edwards. She married November 12 1905 at Nevada Missouri to Benjamin Eacret who survives. A member of the Rockford Methodist Church.
Washington officials said a general price ceiling is planned but not imminent. DiSalle cited staff limits delaying a 60 to 90 day general ceiling while signaling possible selective controls on defense materials.
President Truman and Prime Minister Attlee signaled hope for a peaceful Korean crisis settlement but warned the United Nations will act if Chinese Communists reject peace. The leaders reviewed defenses and Far East policy while deferring next steps pending UN moves and possible talks with Beijing. Gen. J Lawton Collins briefed on Korea.
Ida Siefker Broo of Indianapolis a former Seymour resident and state CPA board member presented Bonnie Oberholtzer of Indianapolis with her certificate making her the second woman in Indianapolis to become a certified public accountant. Broo was Indiana’s first woman CPA and organized the American Society of Women Accountants of which Oberholtzer is an active member as an internal revenue agent.
Miss Gaynelle Moritz recorder of Jackson county was reelected treasurer of the Indiana State Recorders' Association for a third term at the state convention in Indianapolis. The meeting, part of the county and township officials’ convention, also elected other officers.
Seymour fire department rushed to El's Confectionery at 208 West Second Street after an overheated furnace filled the shop with smoke. Firemen deployed a booster-tank hose. damage was light.
