Those at the harbor 35 years ago recall the event with mixed sentiment. Roland Krause of Honolulu, commander of the minesweeper Oglala, recalls the torpedo strike that began the attack and the ship sinking slowly.
Seymour city council approved an antirecession ordinance to allocate 7232 dollars from the federal government for garbage, sanitation, park services, and heating the Seymour Community Center. They discussed U S 50 bypass routes near Seymour and a possible 99 year lease option for Lincoln School. The meeting also addressed removing a 17 ton steam engine from the Blish Mill and a plan to hire two street department truck drivers.
Jackson County Fair board announced committees for the 1977 fair chaired by Charles T. Cummings. The July 31 to August 6 event will include a 4-H Junior Leaders stand, expanded garden tractor pulling, and a Dan Fleener Thrill Show grandstand act. Plans discussed for a parade, possible State Junior Angus Day, and ideas from state fair conventions.
The 58th annual Christmas Basket Fund co sponsored by the Daily Tribune and American Legion Post 89 reports donations totaling 558 dollars after 538 dollars were received earlier. Contributions to the fund support food baskets for needy Seymour families with requests submitted to the fund drive treasurer or Daily Tribune office.
Hamilton township residents filed a writ of certiorari in Jackson Circuit Court against the Jackson County board of zoning appeals. They contest the Nov 9 approval of a special exception for Rose Acre Farms to build nine chicken houses on about nine acres, alleging the board acted irrationally illegal and capriciously. The complaint cites incomplete land descriptions missing a site plan, ownership issues, missing drainage board letter, and failure to keep meeting minutes, seeking to review all papers and records of the proceedings.

The Indiana Highway Commission will reduce the Tipton Street section from Walnut to Vine to 25 mph and cut the Meadow Brook Drive to east of U S 31 stretch to 50 mph after a safety study. Signs should go up in 2 to 4 weeks. Officials cite citizen input and Mayor Conrad H. Ernest’s concurrence.
Gregory Todd, 26, of Seymour, is reported in critical condition at Indiana University Medical Center after a one car crash on Ind. 135 near Wallonia. His sedan split in two after crossing center line and striking a guardrail. Police continue investigation with Lt. Joe Rorig.
The Jackson County board of commissioners met in the courthouse to award contracts for county supplies and landfill operations. Quill N Frill House Seymour won office supplies class three, Graessle Mercer Company Seymour won office supplies classes 1 2 4 and five, Robert and Bryant Lumber Crothersville won 45000 board feet of lumber, Hoosier Materials Salem won ready mix cement, and Georges Seymour won tires and tubes for next year.
Brownstown Central High School Choral Department presents a Christmas Concert on Tuesday December 14 at 7 30 p m in the high school gymnasium. The Activity Period Choir Sixth Period Choir and the Swing Choir perform secular and sacred tunes with soloists Joyce Persinger and Susan McCrary and a small mixed chorus. Choral director Jan Schleter invites the public to attend.
