Auditor Distributes Fall Taxes in Jackson County

The Jackson County auditor issued the annual fall tax distribution totaling 1,210,226.86. Checks arrived by mail with payments covering real estate, personal property, poll taxes, bank taxes 12,296.70 and building and loan taxes 26,456.27. The Sey mour Community Schools Corp received the largest check.

Post Office Predicts Record Yule Mailing

Seymour Postmaster Ivan R. Love predicts a Christmas mail surge with over 12 billion pieces in December and about 10 percent of yearly mail in a three week span. The post office will extend hours on December 12 and 19 and urges patrons to label and separate local and out of town mail for faster handling.

Jackson County Bar Association Elects Officers

The Jackson County Bar Association held its annual winter meeting at the Seymour Elks Club. John M. Lewis of Seymour was elected president for 1965, Edward P. Elsner as vice president, and Roger Parcheck as secretary-treasurer. Lewis succeeds the late Earl C. Kline, who died this year while heading the association. Jonathan J. Robertson, previously vice president, presided at the meeting. Bruce Markel Jr. of Brownstown announced the nominating committee’s report. A large turnout from attorneys and judges across nearby counties attended.

Elmer C. Lory Named to Jackson County Liquor Board

Mayor James L. Laupus announced Elmer C. Lory of 411 East Fourth Street as a member of the Jackson County Alcoholic Beverage Board. Lory, a Republican, replaces Democrat Wayne T. Barlow. The one year term starts December 15 and board composition requires balanced party representation.

Austin Man Hurt In Crash on U S 31

An Austin man, Gene E. Sandlin, 36, was injured in a one car crash on U S 31 near the I 65 overhead and admitted to Schneck Memorial Hospital. Police say a tire blowout caused the vehicle to spin 150 feet before hitting a guard rail and a concrete post. the 1954 car was a total loss.

Coin Shortage Felt in Seymour Area Ahead of Christmas

The Seymour area faces a potential coin shortage as small silver coins grow scarce. Jackson County Bank president G B Bottorff urges residents to exchange dimes and half dollars at banks for larger denominations to keep coins in circulation for holiday shopping. He notes weekly coin orders shrink this week and asks people to bring coins in any form without counting or wrapping them.

Co op Returns $70 000 To Patrons At Annual Meeting

Clifford Osterman reported at the 35th annual stockholders meeting that $70 000 in cash will be returned to Jackson County Farm Bureau Cooperative Association patrons after 1964 net savings. The event drew over 500 stockholders and guests at Seymour High School.

Light Snow Likely In Area Tonight

Light snow forecast for the area tonight as wintry temperatures keep Jackson County and Indiana icy. Readings rise toward normal levels this week with lows generally in the low 20s, while cities report subzero and near freezing conditions and several inches of snow still on the ground.

Accident Victim Is In Good Condition In Vallonia

Miss Rita Lonsberry aged 16 of Vallonia was listed in good condition at Schneck Memorial Hospital after a Friday accident in which 66 year old Harley Edwards was killed. She was a passenger in a car driven by 18 year old Boyd Abner of Medora.

Spraytown Man Killed In One Car Crash In Acme

Joseph Andrew Jackson 21 of Spraytown died in a single vehicle wreck on Ind 258 in Acme near Hunsucker’s Grocery. The 1958 car slammed into a tree, caught fire but he was pulled free. Investigators cite possible sleep and no seat belt. The death is the ninth traffic fatality in Jackson County for 1964 with more to come in the eight county Seymour post area. Funeral arrangements set for Tuesday at Burkholder Funeral Home. He was a 1961 Freetown High School graduate and employed by H O Canfield Co. as a taber helper. He is survived by his parents, two siblings, and grandparents.

At the United Nations General Assembly Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei A Gromyko calls for a world summit on disarmament and submits a memorandum outlining proposed measures. He says the current era is ripe for progress toward a ban on nuclear weapons base liquidations and reduced military budgets.

Multiple court actions in Jackson Circuit Court session

Robert E. Brewer pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of a property damage accident reckless driving and public intoxication with punishment held in abeyance until Tuesday morning. Marilyn J. Anderson was granted a divorce with custody of four children. Carl L. Gehlhausen received a suspended year at the state penal farm for theft by deception with restitution made. Ronald E. Hill pleaded guilty to DUI and faces a 60 day license suspension. Seymour National Bank won judgment against Sarah C. Woolridge for 537.62 principal 63.22 interest and 200 fees.

Fifth Christmas Basket Fund Begins Tuesday

The 46th annual Christmas Basket Fund starts Tuesday in Seymour. Sponsored by Seymour American Legion Post No 89 and the Seymour Daily Tribune, funds aid needy families with food toys and groceries. Thomas A. Plunkett heads the 1964 drive. LeRoy F. Pollett is treasurer.

Eight People Face Fines In Seymour City Court

Nine appeared before Judge William Jones with eight entering guilty pleas. Cash Holland was fined for public intoxication and disorderly conduct after a party at a West Tipton service station. Several others faced lesser fines for speeding and reckless driving.
