Jaycees announce seven Seymour Senior High School girls as contenders for Miss Christmas 1962 with twin entrants Candy and Carol Hedden. Voting opens via pennies in designated canisters at local businesses. The winner earns a $50 bond and a parade role on December 15.
Cold 23 and heavy snow hit the Upstate, with 11 inches in La Porte and eight inches in South Bend. Dozens of rural schools closed in St. Joseph and La Porte counties as plowing limits traffic on U.S. 31. Ice spots appeared on central highways while forecasts call for more flurries through Saturday and teens nightly lows next week. White River at Rockford stood at one foot at 7 a.m.
Indiana Telephone Corporation to start automatic dial service in Salem and Washington County on Sunday December 16. New Motorswitch system from U S Instrument Corp will enable direct toll dialing via Seymour toll switchboard and extended toll free calls to Campbellsburg Fredericksburg Pekin and Chestnut Hill. A new exchange building at Main and Mulberry streets Salem will house the equipment and an open house will be held later for public inspection. Some temporary service disruptions may occur during the switchover as lines switch to the new system.
A 1952 model tractor and semi trailer sustained $1,250 damage after a one vehicle accident on Interstate 65 at the Jackson Scott County line bridge two miles south of Crothersville. Driver John Lloyd Scott 42 of Columbus suffered a right ankle injury and was treated by a physician. The jackknifed truck left front and side damage, with bumper damaged by bridge railing. Police investigators noted icy bridge floor and wet roadway.
Seymour man Charles R. Rollins escaped injury when his 1962 compact sedan was struck by a slow freight train at the Bruce street sidetrack crossing near Jeffersonville Avenue. Damages totaled 150 dollars to the right rear of the car. Engineer Paul Falk and conductor R. S. Donica were aboard the train. officer Robert Gill investigated.
The Seymour American Legion Post No 89 and the Seymour Daily Tribune announce the 44th annual Christmas Basket Fund starting Saturday. Thomas A. Plunkett heads the campaign with Le Roy F. Pollert as treasurer. Donations may be mailed or delivered to Pollert at Seymour National Bank or the Daily Tribune.
Schneck Memorial Hospital reported 2 003 total patient days in November up 104 from October. Inpatients fell to 269 from 320. births were 89 with 14 deaths including two infants. Outpatient tests reached 1 755 on 1 202 patients, similar to October.
Truck rear door unhooked and swung into the windshield of a northbound car on Jeffersonville avenue injuring none and causing about 125 dollars in damage. The operators were Robert L Morgan 27 of 1004 West Oak street and Carl C Able 35 of 221 East Thirteenth street, with vehicles owned by Sears Roebuck Co. and James Blevins respectively.

Rescue teams within about 4 000 feet of 37 miners trapped by a massive Robena No 3 mine explosion in Carmichaels Pennsylvania. Officials said air is poor with deadly gas and fire in the blast area as relatives wait nearby and authorities assess the situation.
County candidates in the November 6 election filed declarations of expenses before the Thursday deadline. The county clerk, H. Jack Spurgeon, noted that nonfilers would be turned over to the prosecuting attorney. Eighteen candidates filed in the final two days. several had no campaign expenses.

Three outpatients were treated at Schenck Memorial Hospital Thursday two young women and a youth. Mrs. Kenneth Hill 28 of 227 Lee Boulevard was admitted for X rays of her right foot and ankle after a fall on basement steps. Ronald Speckner 16 son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Speckner of 822 North Park Street received three lacerations on his right hand from a saw at school. Miss Katie Anthony 18 of 518 East Fourth Street was treated after being cut by broken glass while washing dishes.
