Crothersville Scottsburg and Palmyra banks shut down under new insurance act. Federal and state examiners inspect two weeks as Lynn Craig, former official, faces embezzlement charge for misapplying 28310 dollars in funds.
The Union State Bank Crothersville Scottsburg State Bank and Citizens State Bank Palmyra shut after state and federal reviews. Depositors receive FDIC protection up to 5000 with pro rating for excess. Lynn Craig New Albany banker arrested on federal embezzlement charge of 28310 and held on 5000 bond.
The Jackson County Corn School will discuss good farming practices to raise high yielding corn and reduce production costs. Friday December 11 at the Farmers Club in Seymour beginning at 9 50 a m M Pence of the Agronomy Extension Department will speak on experiences of Indiana corn growers and Purdue University experiments. Topics include legumes, seed selection, bed prep and cultivation, planting rate and spacing.
Shields High School prepares for a tougher test as the Owls host Bedford High School, a team labeled state championship material by sports writers. The game at the local gym is expected to be a sell out with both squads in strong form for the tilt.
Funeral arrangements are set for Charles M. Short fifty nine of Bartholomew County former Seymour resident killed in a Saturday auto collision on U S Road 51 near a tourist hotel north of Jonesville. Short died of a fractured skull at Bartholomew County Hospital Sunday. Witnesses say the car Short drove struck a vehicle driven by Lowell Walls twenty two with Everitt Pannell thirty one and Charles Bellville twenty nine en route to Columbus from Bedford. A signed statement by Walls party was given to the Bartholomew county prosecutor. Services are 2 p m Wednesday at Voss Mortuary with Rev S J Cross. Burial Riverview Cemetery. Friends may call after 7 o clock tonight.
A pre winter cold wave brings a record low for the season with a 13 degree reading at the Henry Ahlert place north of town. The drop follows a drizzly Sunday and cool, sunny day today as winter pushes into the middle United States and parts report high winds and damage in the east and south.
Harold Hudderson, eighteen, of Seymour, was fined 15 dollars and sentenced to 180 days at the state penal farm after being arraigned by Mayor John L. Hosea in Columbus city court on a public intoxication charge. He was arrested Friday night after being found on the floor of the interurban station at Columbius.
Ralph G. Lowe of Louisville was taken from a northbound Pennsylvania train near Seymour by state and Jackson County officers. He faces wife desertion charges after being arrested late Saturday night. accomplice Mrs. Roy Hines, of Worthington, Ohio, remained in county.
Berb Garriott died at 11:30 p m Sunday at his sister Lily Daniels home in Crothersville after a yearlong illness. He was born June 1 1854 in Jackson County the son of Daniel and Elizabeth Garriott and widowed Lena Lewis Garriott. He had been a fur buyer for over fifty years and shipped pelts to Chicago and New York markets. Survived by brothers Oscar and William Garriott.
James Leonard Barrett, 23, allegedly forged about 140 dollars in checks written to payees signed as Claude Carr. Seymour police held him after a failed forged check incident. Scott county officers expected to transfer him for charges. Barrett reportedly confessed to the forgery and said another man instructed him.
Funeral services were held this afternoon at Brownstown for Joseph Allen age sixty five who died at 5 30 Sunday morning at his home following a year long illness He was born January 8 1871 in Brownstown and was unmarried Surviving are his brother John Allen of Logansport two half sisters Mrs W J Robertson of Brownstown and Mrs Eva Belz of Indianapolis He was a longtime driver of a mule drawn car between Brownstown and Ewing and later operated a dray in the county seat He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church Burial was in Fairview Cemetery.
John Bauermeister of Sol West Oak reports the death of his brother Otto Bauermeister age seventy four who died Sunday at his home in Stendal Indiana after pneumonia illness. Funeral services were held at the Stendal Lutheran Church with burial in a Stendal cemetery. He leaves four sons four daughters his wife died two years ago a Lutheran Church member. He is survived by a brother in this city and two sisters Mrs Mollie Killian Rockport and Mrs Louise Zimmer Bargersville.
