With 15 shopping days before Christmas the annual holiday season is in full swing in Seymour. Local stores boast early starts and an accelerated pace as residents fill downtown shops for gifts. Stores stay open Wednesday afternoons and on December 12 and 19, with extended hours to December 22 and early closing December 26.
Pvt James R Young 18 of Browns town Indiana is completing basic airmen indoctrination at Lackland Air Force Base Texas the gateway to the Air Force near San Antonio the world’s largest base hosts basic training and other Air Force programs His training assesses aptitude for a future technical specialty.
An automobile and a truck sustained slight damage in an odd accident this morning on West Bruce street. John W. Hohnstrieter drove a 1936 model one and one half ton truck east when the right rear axle came loose, causing the truck to roll and strike the parked 1941 sedan of Nelson Waldkoetter. About 20 dollars damage to the Waldkoetter auto and five dollars to the truck were reported. city police investigated.
W P Stall of Brownstown Jackson county agricultural agent is in Lafayette for the Indiana County Agents Association annual meeting opening Wednesday and continuing today and Friday. W Winks of Noblesville was elected president with new vice presidents M J Huxley Vincennes Ruth Wimer Tipton and R Berry Anderson. Emerson Monticello serves as secretary treasurer.
Final reports concerning the Christian Rural Overseas Program are being received by LeRoy Pol Jert at Seymour National Bank. Co chairmen Rev Homer J Hunsinger and J R Blair praise contributors and urge remaining reports by early next week. They state many will be helped by the drive and thank all who participated.
A house to house survey by the Parents Teachers Associations wraps up in four city zones. Dr Harold O Neal from Indiana University arrives to install tabulation machinery and spot maps. The study is a joint effort of the Seymour school board and township trustees with Indiana University School of Education researchers. Results are expected soon.
A join of laymen from Immanuel and Redeemer Lutheran churches attended a Lutheran Laymen’s League kickoff at Brownstown Lutheran School Hall. E. W. Schroeter outlined the 1952 membership drive aiming for at least 10 percent of the Missouri Synod congregants. Local leaders Waldr on Bruemmer and Paul Parcheck spoke as Theodore Precht and Louis Schroer contributed.
James H. Sutton promoted to major while with the 24th Infantry Division on the Korean front. He earned the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster for meritorious service from March 8 to August 2, 1951, as supply officer of the 5th Regimental Combat Team. Sutton served earlier in World War II and arrived in Korea March 4, 1951. Lois Sutton resides at 701 East Fifth Street Seymour Indiana.
A. L. Blevins and Francis Schultheis received bronze statuettes for service to Scouting from the Hoosier Hills area Council at the district Scouters dinner in Greensburg Masonic Temple. Governor Henry F. Schrieker spoke on scouting as a church activity. over 160 attended, including many local scoutmasters and wives.
The Seymour Exchange Club and Seymour Boys Club sponsor a Sunday paper drive on December 16 to benefit the Boys Club. Volunteers will cover Seymour, Crothersville, Cortland and Jonesville from 7 to 10 a m, collecting all paper types placed on porches Saturday night or Sunday morning.
Official and unofficial readings report the day’s conditions in Seymour. Downtown temperature reached a high of 48 and a low of 20 with 0.33 inches of precipitation. River level stood at 8.6 feet with 2 pm readings noted by Ruth Everhart.
In Munsan Korea on December 6 the Allies backed a communist demand that only specified points be inspected during the Korean armistice. The UN eight point plan aims to limit inspections while joint Allied Red teams conduct checks. The Communists oppose, want neutral nation reps to inspect all points.
Nine year old Charles Eugene Derringer, son of Mrs Alma Derringer of Austin, was moved from Schneck Memorial Hospital to Riley Hospital in Indianapolis for treatment after a Tuesday crash on U S Route 31. His condition was reported slightly improved. He was struck by a car driven by Maurice Alan Nealy of Indianapolis when he darted across the road after leaving school.
Cpl Samuel Phillips Jr arrived Wednesday for a 40 day leave with his parents at 823 West Laurel. He recently spent 131 months in Korea with the Second Division and was wounded last September. After leave he will report to Fort Knox Kentucky for reassignment.
The Shields High School music department presents its annual Christmas concert Sunday afternoon in the girls gym. The program features the SHS band conducted by Frank Cofield and the SHS choir directed by David N Davenport, promising festive season music and a large holiday audience.
Wednesday rain measured .38 inch with persistent showers tonight. White River rose to 3.6 feet while temperatures ranged 40 to 48 degrees. AP notes clouds and cooler trend with Friday mostly cloudy and colder. Snow storm hit Utah Idaho creating travel disruption. Temperatures ranged from 89 in Laredo to 62 in New York and Philadelphia.
Hibok Hibok on Camiguin Island Philippines buried 209 bodies with at least 500 more feared under a six square mile lava ash blanket. Three eruptions sent poisonous fumes and hot ash driving search crews from towns of seven villages as lava threatens lowlands. About 10,000 residents crowded into nearby Mindanao awaiting evacuation decisions.
Howard W. Waggoner 77 lifelong western Jackson County resident died shortly before noon at his Freetown home after two years of declining health. Born January 29 1874 near Houston he was married to Alice T. Phillips in 1898 and survived by his widow four daughters two sons and eleven grandchildren. Funeral services set for Sunday at 1 p m at the Freetown Christian Church with burial in Lutes Cemetery. Friends may call after 6 p m Friday at the home.
Cordes Hardware Company Inc. awarded $155.38 against David Barnett on account. George V Boas doing business as Georges Good Gulf Service awarded $419.71 against Roscoe Meadows on account.
Allied airmen pressed a 107 strike on Communist field guns in Korea as UN air support tactics shifted. Over 11 days of jet battles, 33 Red planes were destroyed, 32 damaged, with total air losses totaling 453 aircraft destroyed and 293 damaged. Far south, Red guerrillas attacked South Korean troops in a sneak operation.
Bedford resident Wilson, ninth district congressman, returns from a European port study tour for the American Port Security Program. The plan scrutinizes cargoes at foreign ports to preempt atomic threats reaching U S shipping centers, with emphasis on vigilance at international and domestic ports. He led a committee with Passman and Fernandez to study funding for full implementation.
Washington reports a House hearing on a claimed $500,000 tax fix involving high officials. Leslie Sale denied calling Frank Nathan a blackmailer, while Abraham Teitelbaum testified the accusation was made. Nathan dismissed Teitelbaum as a liar.
