Checks totaling about $30 000 were mailed today by the Jackson County Loan and Trust Company and the Seymour National Bank to members of the Christmas Savings Clubs. The amount marks a new savings record and will flow into retail spending and permanent savings as members prepare for holiday shopping.
Mrs Helen Ryan Cressman Carr a former Ziegfeld Follies showgirl aged 38 was found dead in her Riverside apartment with a gas stove on. Detective Eugene Reilly classified the death as self-inflicted after she allegedly turned on the stove, left a farewell note, and the room filled with gas while her estranged husband comedian Alexander Carr was nearby searching for her.
Funeral services set for John L. Bindner a prominent life insurance man based in Indianapolis and Louisville who died in a local hospital yesterday. He was born in Louisville and had lived here fourteen years leaving a widow eight children.
Frederick B. Kingston, 65, longtime sales manager for a New Castle lathe maker, died Saturday in Shoals Indiana. He had been serving as a Rural Resettlement Administration bookkeeper.
Terre Haute Indiana December 5 Frank Engles aged 80 died from burns after a weekend blaze destroyed his home west of the city. He was trapped inside the burning residence and succumbed to injuries sustained in the fire.
Civil War veteran and oldest living former student of DePauw University Leonard H. Mahan, 99, died Saturday and was buried here today.
Lon D. Reedy a 56 year old farmer living three miles east of Portland Ind died after falling from a hay mow in a high barn yesterday. Local authorities reported the accident occurred on the farm where he worked.
Governor Townsend along with James M. Knapp of Hagerstown and Tom Wallace editor of the Louisville Times will speak during sessions at the three day Indiana county and township officials convention opening Thursday in Indianapolis.
A special program marked the fifteenth anniversary of the Trinity Methodist Church dedication. Speakers noted past leadership and future goals, with musical tributes. Membership grew from 265 to 335, while eighty four early members died or transferred. Mrs Hutchies spoke on India at the women's missionary society service.
Six cases were filed in Seymour city court after weekend arrests as Mayor Burkart presided. Elmer Wheeler of Indianapolis pled guilty to operating a motor vehicle under the influence, was fined $10 and costs totaling $20, with license revoked 90 days. Wheeler was arrested on State Road 9 by Officer Monr. Cecil Everman, recently released from county jail, was jailed again for public intoxication and fined $11 with a suspended six month sentence. Emmitt Sterling of Browns Town pled guilty to public intoxication and fined $11. John Manning, east of Seymour, pled guilty to public intoxication. six months suspended on good behavior. Arthur Tankersley’s assault charge was dismissed when the wife did not appear. James Weddell’s assault charge was dismissed when the wife withdrew the complaint.
Seymour Post American Legion launches a Santa Fund to provide toys candies and fruit for children in homes facing illness or financial hardship. Donations accepted at American Security Company. donors named in The Daily Tribune. About 300 dollars needed to fulfill plans with total contributions rising from 28 to 35.25.
J R Mitchell, chairman of the Jackson County Tuberculosis Association, reports first week Christmas seal receipts in 1938 nearly match 1937. He credits public response to support a thirty one year effort to build defenses against tuberculosis and notes bonds sold from five dollars up, framing by schools and organizations as a show of participation.
Dr J E P Holland longtime Indiana University physician died at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis after a short illness. He and his wife Mrs Beryl Showers Holland survived a near fatal car flood accident last April. A son Dr Charles Holland lives in Bloomington.
More than 600 stock handlers returned to work in the Chicago stock yard pens today, ending a two week strike that had tied up the nation’s largest meat animal market. Striking CIO Stockhandlers Local 567 members quit November 21 and accepted a peace proposal from the Union Stock Yards and Transit Company.
The city’s six weeks attendance report shows 97.83 percent overall. Emerson School Room Six led with 99.54 percent, while Senior High School posted the lowest at 97.53. Average daily attendance totaled 1519.68 across grades, junior high, and senior high, with 32.52 daily absences and 271 tardies all told.
Miss Helen Hinton of Seymour pleaded guilty in Columbus for public intoxication and received a suspended ninety day sentence after agreeing not to return. Fred Olmstead also pleaded guilty and received a ninety day penal farm term. Chester Bratcher, previously suspended, faced a 180 day penal farm sentence with ninety days remaining to serve. All three were arrested on Franklin Street beside the Westermeier store.
Exhibitors at the 39th international livestock exposition head home with one million dollars in sales money and one hundred thousand dollars in prizes. Illinois farmers and stockbreeders led all states and the Dominion of Canada in prizes with Indiana second and Oklahoma third.

Jackson County board names Fred Meyer as road superintendent effective Jan 1. Charles R. Mather will become county surveyor. Emil F. Zabel now surveyor and road superintendent to receive 1575 annual. Meyer's salary not yet set. Harold Gossman to another term as county attorney.
Lawrence Thias of West McDonald Street learns his sister-in-law Mrs John Thias has died in Pittsburgh Pa this morning. Funeral arrangements and other details are not learned here. Mrs Thias husband formerly lived in Seymour and has many relatives and friends here who regret the loss.
Chillicothe Ohio December 5 1939 AP Robert Bready 29 pleaded innocent to first degree murder in the death of his pastor father Dr Russell H Bready of Brainbridge bound over to Ross county grand jury bond denied and he remained jailed as his attorney Paul Hirtenstein entered the plea.
Peru Ind Dec 5 Coroner A S Newell of Miami county said Mrs Lucy N Sanders 78 committed death by own action yesterday by throwing herself into a stock watering tank on the farm of her son Thomas Sanders near Macy
In Porter superior court this week the lawsuit over a $100 mare bought in 1933 by Ben and Vernon Kuehl from Ben Anderson is reopened after six prior actions. Court costs have reached about $600 and Anderson, who sued for the money, died in an auto crash. his heirs continue the case while the mare is now dead.
Washington predicts 1939 appropriations will hit at least ten billion dollars driven by defense relief and social security costs. House subcommittee begins work on independent agencies bill as administration weighs defense needs and farm parity options may rise.
