More than $32 000 in Christmas Club savings checks were distributed to about 1575 members from three Danks banks. Checks posted Thursday for delivery today put the entire amount in members hands, boosting local store sales as funds circulate before Christmas.
Dr. T A Speckman of Cincinnati will speak at Trinity Methodist church at 7 30 PM on Philip the Layman. He conducts the first quarterly conference following the service. Speckman is the new district superintendent making his first city visit.
The Majestic Theatre offers Indian hats to the first 100 boys and girls attending the matinee on Saturday. Dr. C. E. Gillespie’s office will be closed until December 7.
Herbert Lambring age teen son of Mr and Mrs George Lambring was injured when the car he was driving overturned at the corner of Fifth and Chestnut streets. He suffered a severe knee cut and bruises and was treated by a local physician where five stitches were applied. He was driving on Chestnut street to avoid a collision with another car when the vehicle overturned.
James Franklin Charles, 74, of Norman Station, died at home after a two month illness. Funeral at his residence Saturday at 2 pm with Rev. B E Scott officiating. Burial in Bagwell cemetery. Born in Jackson county he married Hettie Akers on November 6, 1896. He was a member of Newcastle church of God. Survived by six children Luella Wagoner Shirley Thomas Charles Orville Charles and Addie Grace, one brother Miles Charles.
Mrs. Henry Rebber aged eighty of Dudleytown dies at home after fifty years in the neighborhood. Services set for Sunday in German and English at the Dudleytown Lutheran church. She was born in May 1850 in Huntingburg Germany and is survived by six children seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Fred Walther formerly of East Chicago will be installed as the new teacher of the South District Sauers School. The ceremony Sunday morning will be led by Rev. J. Th. Destinon, with the topic The Office of a Christian Parochial School Teacher A Difficult But Glorious Office. Walther succeeds KE A Lauf, a longtime South District instructor who previously taught in East Chicago.
A local music shop showcases a window display of instruments. EK H Hancock Music and Radio Co advertises a complete stock of musical gear.
Madison fans pack Shields Gym as the Madison County team travels to Seymour to face the Owls in a preliminary bout between Coach Ernest Asbell's Owlets and the Clearspring varsity. Officials H A Meyers and D Chandler of Indianapolis will preside. Roster notes mention Lyons developing an aggressive offense and pivots for center circle action.
Indianapolis Dec 5 A bill by state banking commissioner Luther F Symons would place defunct banks under the Indiana State Banking Department as receiver The department could file suits collect bills pay creditors and depositors and perform duties of a receiver Special deputies would be hired with salaries approved by the state budget committee The measure aims to strengthen state banking and save thousands annually for depositors A second Symons proposal would cap bank loan amounts to curb insolvencies blamed on frozen assets.
Brownstown reports no candidates will face prosecution for failure to file expense accounts after the voting, with the last day for filing having passed. The law requires all candidates to file within thirty days, except those for offices with salaries under $100 a year. A Lions Club charter meeting in North Vernon elected William Fitzgerald president and set a January 5 banquet date.
Paris reports focus on Raymond Poincare as the crisis drags on after Premier Andre Tardieu and his cabinet were censured 147 to 139 for handling of financial scandals. Doumenne calls Poincare to Elysee as politics weigh a new ministry while Tardieu’s position weakens.
The Jackson County Tuberculosis Association drive ends Saturday announced by Mrs. H C Henderson president of the Gamma Phi chapter of Kappa Kappa Kappa. Committees plan final canvassing and tabulation will occur late next week as more organizations meet.
Secretary of Labor nominee William N Doak may take office Monday or Tuesday next week following Senate labor committee approval. The Senate delayed action for a weekend recess due to procedure concerns by Senator Couzens. The American Federation of Labor dropped its objection after Doak’s nomination was sent to the chamber. Confirmation appeared probable for Monday.
Anderson Indiana December 5 Mrs Homer Harmon 38 of Alexandria died at an Elwood hospital from injuries after an automobile collision near Elwood when the car she rode in wrecked after a collision with another vehicle.
Endearing correspondence between George Bernard Shaw and Ellen Terry, spanning 1890 to 1928, will be published by Fountain Press. Shaw’s preface warns readers not to read the letters as conventional intimate exchanges, but as reflections of the theatre world’s atmosphere.
The Seymour Post No. 80 American Legion votes to sponsor a city Christmas tree again this year. FD Warner says plans include installation furnishing and decoration as last year. A planning meeting set for December 17 will appoint a committee to work with other civic groups. Last year hundreds of children enjoyed Santa Claus at the tree with candy and holiday cheer.
Engineers began Road 50 survey from Brownstown to Seymour under the State Highway Commission. They were ordered Thursday to discontinue with plans to resume shortly. A. B. Richards led five engineers starting at Brownstown Main and Cross streets, prelim to a 1931 paving contract not yet guaranteed. Another crew surveys Brownstown to Medora as part of Bedford highway project.
President Hoover moves to spend 150 million dollars on public building projects within six months. The House appropriations committee opens hearings with witnesses from the Public Roads Bureau Army Engineers and Budget Office. The plan targets already authorized projects and aims to create wage relief within six months.
The Red Cross drive in Jackson County is expected to exceed last year with O C C Frey stating totals from Brownstown Seymour Jackson township Driftwood and Carr township come to 1050. The county quota is 1200 and final reports are awaited to tabulate results.
Two guns and two coats stolen from Woods Whalen and Wassen hardware in Westport were found at a Green home near Osgood south of town. Alonzo Fitch Bartholomew sheriff said the Greens claimed innocence as Forrest Huntington of the Indiana bureau of criminal identification and investigation uncovered the items.
