Governor M Clifford Townsend announced an extension to March 1 1940 for buying next year’s automobile license plates. The January 1 1940 deadline for driving licenses and truck weight certificates remains unchanged. Townsend cited partisan politics as the reason the March 1 plates bill failed last session and urged adjournment to allow a March 1 deadline by law.

Silas McGatha Dies at 75 in Cortland Area
Silas McGatha aged 75 of Cortland area died Sunday at Sehneck Memorial Hospital after a five day illness from heart disease. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10 am from Voss Mortuary, with burial at Riverview Cemetery. Survived by four children, one sister, sixteen grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. widow Susan Wright preceded him in death. He was a lifelong county resident, a Church of God member, and a farmer.

Youth given severe penalty after DUI arrest
Clyde Chester Sullivan of Freetown pleaded guilty to a second operation while intoxicated and was fined 100 plus costs totaling 110 and sentenced to six months at the penal farm. His license had been suspended for a year by Mayor Stanley A. Switzer after his arrest for DUI on U. S. Road 31. Sullivan had previously been arraigned for DUI May 10. Also, Leo Speck of Sermour pleaded guilty to DUI, fined 10 plus costs 20, and received a 30 day license suspension. Sullivan and a female companion were riding when their car overturned near Brownstown. no injuries reported.
