A group of three armed men invaded Matthewan State Hospital for the Criminal Insane in NX. They overpowered four employees and freed six inmates including Harry Gordon and Frank Danderkeylen. The escapees fled in two cars after releasing the six who were in bed when the assailants arrived.

James Cunningham 71 Dies in Brownstown
James Cunningham aged 71 of Brownstown died at his daughter Mrs Robertson's home after a year long illness with heart disease. Funeral services will be held at the Robertson home Friday at 2:30 with Rev J E Reynolds of Brownstown Christian church in charge. Burial in Fairview Cemetery. He was a member of the Christian church and formerly ran a lumber business in Brownstown.
