Farmer Fatally Struck Walking Across Train Crossing
Frank M. Able 65, a retired farmer and stock buyer from Columbus R8 near Jonesville, was fatally injured Tuesday afternoon when struck by a northbound Pennsylvania passenger locomotive at the Second street crossing. He died about 13 hours later at Schneck Memorial Hospital. Witnesses say he did not see the approaching train and attempted to hurry across the track. The conductor Ora Hall and crossing watchman Lloyd Anderson provided statements. deputy coroner W L Burkholder is on the case.

The thermometer did not fall below 40 overnight, the first night in eight above freezing. White River at Rockford sits at 1.8 feet. Forecasters expect cloudy skies tonight and Thursday.

The Seymour fire department made three runs this morning to fires in grass and leaves. An apartment at 401 East Second Street owned by Aaron Sallee had a small roof fire confined to a tiny area. A rear yard blaze near City Councilman Paul B. Gregory at 1027 West Jackson Street was extinguished. A third fire at Eighth and Blish streets spread near a residence at the southeast corner of the intersection.
