Prisoner and guard injured in U S Route 31 collision
A federal prisoner and guard were injured in a head-on crash with a large truck on U S Route 31 five miles south of town. Prisoner Albert Kline and guard Arthur Loche sustained serious and minor injuries and were hospitalized. The other passenger, Aren Jones, and another prisoner escaped injury. both were later moved toward Indianapolis. The names of the injured and uninjured parties were confirmed by local police.

Archie the black bear remains at large in White River bottoms as James Sullivan of the Sullivan Cafe northwest of Rockford continues the search. The bear’s tracks were found in the bottomlands northeast of the cafe while no reports of livestock trouble have been made nearby. Archie escaped Wednesday afternoon as Sullivan opened the bear cage near the cafe.
