Willie Ruth 20 of Jackson County was sentenced in Brown Circuit Court Nashville to life imprisonment for the August 25, 1962 ax handle murder of Harvey Carmichael in Brown County. He pleaded guilty to second degree murder and will be sent to Indiana State Prison to begin life term after a year of legal delay and appeals.

The Jackson County council in a special session approved appropriations totaling 3,452.20 for the county general fund 4,000 for the highway fund and 4,480 for the hospital fund and called for matching reductions in those funds. The WHAS Crusade for Children awarded Jackson County Council for Retarded Children $6500 toward a two classroom school for mentally and physically handicapped children. Jackson County must raise $8500 more to reach a $15,000 estimated cost. construction could start next spring for the 1964-65 term. Local officials and teachers attended the WHAS ceremony in Louisville and plans call for the new building on Seymour Redding School grounds.

Jackson County Farm Bureau Cooperative Inc. held its 34th annual meeting at Seymour Senior High School with 700 plus stockholders and guests. Coon hunters flee after tree fire endangers dogs
Firefighters from the Jackson-Washington Townships Volunteer Fire Department were summoned to a farm five miles southeast of Seymour to battle a large tree ablaze while coon dogs remained tied to the scene. The hunters fled, leaving the dogs and owner’s name on collars as the fire burned for hours in freezing weather. The team cut the tree and extinguished the blaze. the dog owner was not identified by the firefighters.
