Local observers warn of a potential 45 percent rise in potato prices ahead of a new federal tax. The tax applies to potatoes harvested from now on, with the first taxable crops reaching markets in February and March. Farmers benefit from the tax only with the 1936 crop, while early price increases may occur to cushion the jump. Continued on page 5 column 7.
Edward F. Trefz of Los Angeles spoke at a mass meeting predicting congressional enactment of the Townsend old age pension plan. He said the Townsend Legion would gather in Washington with 50 000 supporters soon after Congress convenes to demand consideration.
Jackson County Tuberculosis Association reports 135.75 collected as the Christmas seal sale opens. W H Hughes says letters went to 1 050 households inviting $1 donations via stamped envelopes. Health bonds are contributing, with Emerson School PTA and several clubs buying bonds. Seymour public school teachers pledge 53 for seats. funds coming from Wallonia Brownstown Medora and other communities expected to grow the total tonight.
Berlin authorities report Hans Kerrl head of the National Department of Church Affairs stripped the Protestant confes sional synod of all authoritative and administrative rights. The action halted pastors from sending communications without approval by Kerrl.
The State Highway Commission will open bids Tuesday for 17 county projects with an estimated cost above two million dollars. Work covers 114 miles including national and municipal segments in Sullivan Brown Randolph Martin Greene Gibson Warrick Blackford Wells Grant Whitley Hendricks Boone Marshall Kosciusko Fulton and Wabash counties plus city streets in Sullivan Wabash Swayzee and Union City. Total three settings in December with about four million eight hundred thousand dollars in projects.
A Feb. crash on Ewing street left William H. Crane 58 unconscious and seriously injured, after being thrown through a windshield in a collision with a parked car. Albert Donhost 47, Jonesville postmaster and driver, sustained minor injuries. both treated at Schneck Memorial Hospital.
The Lawrence County Young Democratic Club unanimously endorsed Rep. Eugene B. Crowe Bedford for the spring primary nomination and his 1936 re election. The club previously sponsored district dinners and motor caravans to back Crowe as his primary vote in Lawrence County has climbed. Crowe arrived from Washington after Congress adjourned, then went to Hawaii where he chaired hearings on the statehood bill before resuming district talks.
Shanghai report cites an unimpeachable source that the Chinese national government will grant North China broad self governing powers amounting to autonomy in all but name. The measure aims to block the secession of northern provinces from the Chinese Republic.
Eight people including four children escaped a six room fire at 548 South O'Brien Street after Major the dog barked and woke the Crum and Pollert families. Firefighters battled intense flames racing under a slate roof aided by a west wind. The house owned by Henry Pollert was largely gutted.

AAA officials announced 1936 37 contracts to boost hog production by 30 percent next year. Contracts set base hog and corn acres via community and country control. allow 100 percent hog base, require 10 to 50 percent corn reduction, and pay 1.25 per hog base with 35 cents per bushel corn. Payments in two installments, tenant landlord sharing, and soil improving plantings required.
Mrs Marietta Ryan Wilson age eighty three widow of D W Wilson died at her home 505 Ewing street at 2 o clock this morning after more than a year illness with complications. A lifelong Jackson county resident she was born January 8 1852 in Redding township and married Daniel W Wilson in 1870. Surviving relatives include nieces and nephews in Seymour Scipio and Elizabethtown.
Premier Mussolini led 900 mothers and widows of war dead in a nationwide mobilization to back Italy’s economic fight against League of Nations sanctions. The women toured communities, pledged resistance, and urged food and fuel conservation, scrap metal drives, and the collection of gold for the government.
Governor Paul V. McNutt meets in Washington to learn if Indiana must call a special legislative session to align old age pension laws with federal standards. Rome December 2 The women of Italy will donate their golden wedding rings to the government effort against League of Nations sanctions. They plan to place the rings over the graves of war dead or at monuments on December 18, a day chosen by gold star mothers and widows to visit homes and strengthen resistance to penalties for the Fascist war in Ethiopia.
Martin Farrell and Francis Wiley were executed in the electric chair at Rockview Prison Bellefonte Pennsylvania for abducting a Philadelphia gambler and killing him. They had been on death row since March and exchanged final words before death.

At Cornell University experiments over eight years boosted iodine in eggs and milk by feeding hens and cows seaweed. The iodine rich eggs contain about 5 000 parts per billion, far higher than ordinary eggs, with seaweed and fish scrap diets. The program aims to prevent goiter and fuel further research.
