Reconstruction of the Buhner Fertilizer Company plant on U. S. Route 50 near the city begins with all steel construction and a five ton crane. The facility to be completed by February 1 will resume operations in spring and double local production capacity.
Albert Vogel escaped injury when his Ford truck overturned at the Second Street Broadway intersection Saturday afternoon. Maple Middleton of Indianapolis drove the touring car north on Broadway and crossing Second Street. Vogel was pinned but unharmed. Middleton claimed no damage to his car though the Vogel truck was crushed and spectators helped lift it off him amid his cries that he had killed someone. Police were alerted and Middleton reportedly headed toward Indianapolis.
John F. Conway a 42 year old brakeman from Terre Haute Indiana was killed Sunday night when he tried to board a train near Danville and was struck by the wheels of the Chicago Milwaukee and St Paul Railroad authorities reported.
Mrs. Vadaavne of Clear Spring learns her brother Ivis Barrett aged 25 of Springville was badly hurt in a Thanksgiving Day automobile crash. He is in Bloomington hospital with severe injuries including broken hips a spinal injury and facial lacerations. Barrett former resident of Owen township moved away eight years ago.
Shields high school coach Babe Wheeler announced a week of practice to improve shooting for the Bedford game. He blamed Friday’s loss to Columbus on nerves and holiday distractions and said focus will be on accuracy. Booster club official J. F. Beldon noted a special train over the B and O railroad.
Louis Aufenberg Jackson township trustee reports twenty two families used the township poor fund during the cold two weeks. Doles range from 1.25 to 10 dollars weekly, with the higher amount by county approval in emergencies. Funds cover food fuel and clothing, with school needs paid by Norman Lasher. Residency of six months required. Most applicants are widows or families of men in state institutions.
The heaviest snowfall in five years blanketed Seymour and Jackson county. Four inches fell last night, melting to .27 inches. cold return predicted with a two to three day deep freeze. Trains and traction were delayed but later resumed near schedule. plows not deployed as drift was manageable. Weather officer Riley Goble expects the snow to linger with no immediate warm spell.
Major Owen KR. Bird a broker and sportsman was held on suspicion of murder in the shooting of Percival G. Watson at Bird's home after an argument with Bird's wife. Watson, a mechanical engineer and a friend of Bird, was shot three times last Tuesday night. Bird was arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon and released on a 410,000 bond.
Denver reports ice cold conditions sweep the nation as snow blankets the Rockies. Lawrence Cook, 22, survived a crash that killed his wife, 23, after their car overturned near Vallonia. He, too, was injured and later learned of the funeral plans for Mrs. Cook. Funeral services were held in Vallonia.
Henry Mellencamp of Cortland sold two aged mules nine months ago to a buyer in Jennings County. The pair aged 26 and 27 returned yesterday with broken halters. Mellencamp forgot the buyer’s name but said he could reclaim the mules by pursuing them.
Omer H. Peters of Driftwood township, a two year member of Jackson county 4-H Potato Club, left for Indianapolis to join 50 Indiana 4-H youths at the International Livestock Show and Club Congress in Chicago. He won a free trip from the Indiana State Board of Agriculture for his two year Potato Club record, with first at the county show and top finishes at the Indiana State Fair in 1928 and 1929, a rare honor for such a short membership.
Tom Vernon a 43-year-old former cowboy rodeo rider and fireman and five-time convict awaited in Pawnee Oklahoma for interrogation by Wyoming and California authorities. They identified Vernon from photographs as the man who derailed and robbed two passenger trains the Portland Limited near Cheyenne Wyoming and the Pacific Coast Limited near Saugus California, taking passengers’ money.
Noble Craig spent the week end visiting relatives in Franklin, as reported by local observers. The trip appeared casual with no formal events tied to the visit.
James Hansen aged 16 and Charles Williams aged 20 both of Wabash Indiana are held in Chattanooga on charges of housebreaking and stealing an automobile owned by Albert Bickles of Wabash. Arrests followed reports of a man in women’s clothing near a Birmingham highway parked car and officers recovering clothing stolen from a local Chattanooga home.

In Newark New Jersey a fire in the X ray storage room at the hospital for crippled children led to the safe evacuation of 69 bed ridden patients aged 4 months to 15 years. Dr George Osgood detected fumes, cut power, and firemen deployed gas masks as staff relocated patients.
Christian Henry Wolka aged fifty nine died at Schneck Memorial hospital Sunday after an illness of about ten days from an acute stricture of the bowels. Funeral services will be held at Wegan Slatheran church Wednesday at 1 o clock with burial in Wegan cemetery. He was born in Driftwood township and lived in Grassy Fork where he farmed. He married Juna Wienhorst on April 11 1896. Surviving are a daughter Mrs Lawrence Rieckers of Grassy Fork a brother Ed Wolka and two half brothers Fred and William Wolka and two sisters Mrs Sophia Hackman and Mrs Emma Steinkamp.
Norman J. Lasher superintendent of schools was confined to his home with influenza after a cold that worsened Friday night when he attended the Seymour Columbus basketball game in Columbus. He is expected to return to his desk Tuesday.
The Postal Telegraph office plans to resume in its former quarters by Tuesday as crews repair fire damage. Manager Kudaly reports the local cable damage was confined to the building along with a shorted Franklin line. Splicers test junctions while a new front door plate glass is ordered.
The Shields high school Hi Y club reported on the annual state Older Boys Conference in Columbus. Members Troy Blackall Ronald Borcherding John Hughes and others attended and presented details at the morning meeting.
