City Building Bond Issue Clears Hurdle

A representative of the Indiana State Tax Board gave tentative approval for a $250000 bond to remodel the former post office into the city hall and to build two new fire stations. City Clerk-Treasurer Gaynelle Moritz said there were no objectors.

Downtown Seymour Stores Offer Extra Christmas Shopping Hours

Downtown Seymour shops will stay open all day Wednesday and each Wednesday until Christmas to ease holiday buying. Under a Chamber policy, stores stay open two weekends and Dec 12 through 23 until 9 p.m. Some stores will also stay open nightly except Sundays. Christmas Eve hours end in the late afternoon.

Hearing On Marion School Vote Held

About 100 residents attended a public hearing at Marion township school on December 7 regarding a referendum on disannexation. Jennings County schools superintendent Robert Powell explained the nonbinding inquiry aims to inform the Jennings County board and potential tax implications if western Marion joins Vernon Township. Balloting will run 2 to 8 pm with separate boxes for east and west township residents.

Farm News: Omer Eggeman Hopes For Better Corn Yield

Omer Eggeman, a Seymour R3 farmer, loads shelled corn from a tractor mounted picker into a truck on his sister-in-law Mrs Ethel Peters farm two miles west of Brownstown along U S 50. He farms over 200 acres and notes a smaller yield this year due to a prolonged drought last summer.

Ship Morrell sinks on Lake Huron amid 28 feared dead

Rescue teams hunted the stormy Lake Huron area for the Daniel J Morrell after it broke in two and sank 20 miles northeast of Harbor Beach. Twenty-nine crewmen were aboard. only one survivor, Dennis Hale, was recovered from a liferaft as frigid conditions hampered the search for other missing crew.

Draft To Take Three Monday Inductees Among Local County Men

Three county men will be inducted into the armed forces and 44 others will take pre induction physicals Monday, according to Mrs Pat Smith, clerk of the local Selective Service office. Pre induction physicals are taken at the Armed Forces Examining and Entrance Station in Indianapolis.
