A sharp cold snap drives temperatures to new seasonal lows with below zero readings while snow blankets Seymour and Jackson County. Tampico High School remains closed due to icy roads though buses run on schedule. officials expect classes to resume Tuesday if conditions allow.
Seymour’s downtown Christmas display came to life at 6 p m Saturday on Second and Chestnut streets. Sixty two utility poles carry 2215 lights with red bells silver stars Santa faces and Merry Christmas or Seasons Greetings messages. Some poles were not fully decorated due to weather and should finish today or Tuesday. No lights span the streets to allow passage of Friday’s Christmas Fairyland Parade balloons.
A legislative study commission reports alleged sweetheart deals between hospitals and Blue Cross Blue Shield in Indiana. It plans bills to curb practices, create an insurance advisory board, tighten agent licensing, and consider a deductible to cut unnecessary hospital care. Senator Spurgeon and other lawmakers led the two year study.
The Rev. George Edward Millard, pastor of Fourth Congregational Church in Chicago, will become pastor of St. Paul’s Congregational Church in Seymour. He will start duties in January and preach his first sermon January 11. He succeeds Rev. Homer J. Hunsinger who resigned September 1 to take another post.
Seymour’s Albert A. Steinwedel became the first member of the new Democratic administration sworn in as state auditor in the capitol rotunda. Gov Schricker led the ceremonies with oath by Martin W. Steinwedel, as Roy T. Combs gave the invocation. Steinwedel plans to keep 70 staff until Jan 1 and then replace them, while commuting from Seymour and sharing an office near the governor. He will sit on the three member state finance board and vows cooperative, efficient government with cost reductions where possible.
A Medora woman Hazel Hacker appeared in Jackson Circuit Court and pleaded not guilty to bigamy charges filed by Roy Reynolds. Bond set at 2000. Reynolds alleges he lived with Hacker from August 1955 until this year, discovering she was not divorced from Larkin Hacker. Hacker denies charges claiming divorce from Hacker. Hearing date not yet set.
Shields Senior High School announces 119 students earned places on the high and regular honor rolls after the second six weeks. Freshmen lead with 47 total on both rolls. seniors top in high roll with nine. Names of honorees across grades listed, including Robert Bennett, Michele Ashcraft, Paula Pollett, and many others.
Jury selection begins in Jackson Circuit Court for the second degree murder trial of 16 year old Joe Hollin of Crothersville. Defense attorney AI Whitcomb and prosecutor James L. Laupus question jurors as the venire of 40 is drawn. Hollin faces life if convicted for the August 18 hammer slaying of Donal E. Meadors aged 25.
More than 600 Americans died in accidents over the four day Thanksgiving weekend with nearly 450 from traffic crashes. Snow and cold weather contributed to the toll amid several fires and other violent deaths. New York led states with 20 plus highway fatalities. Rhode Island reported none.
Four days of balloting remain in Seymour's Penny-a-Vote election for the Christmas Fairyland Parade queen. Votes close at noon Friday and the parade starts at 6 30 p m the same night.

Indiana tavern keepers were warned not to serve Navy and Marine Corps personnel under 21. The state Alcoholic Beverage Commission relayed the Naval District commandant’s order, noting state law bans under 21 drinking but military personnel have customarily been served.
Harold Fry aged 32 of Seymour faced a larceny charge in Mayor Isaacs court. He was arrested on a warrant at 7 25 am in the 100 block of West Ninth by Officer Calvin W Theele for allegedly stealing six white shirts a suit coat a pair of pants and a razor valued at 35 from Frank Foochs who swore out the warrant.
Paris AP reports right wing leaders backing Premier Charles de Gaulle won a commanding majority in the new French National Assembly. The Communist share fell to 22.9 percent with 10 seats, while Jacques Soustelle’s UNR captured 32.1 percent and 188 of 465 European seats, enabling a conservative majority with independents.
