Indiana County marks a milestone as the first state widening of a bridge on State Road 235 near Medora. Virgil Smith, highway chairman, notes slabs placed in 36 minutes, traffic flowing within 45. Plan calls for 600+ bridges widened, one per day, as county roads join the state system.
France moved toward early elections as Premier Edgar Faure dissolved the National Assembly. Mendes France allies quickly mobilized against Faure, denouncing the move as an national outrage while seeking to delay elections and push district based voting.
Lawrence Monroe of Seymour R3 was treated for first and second degree burns to his hands and face after discovering a barn fire on his farm. He was released from Schneck Memorial Hospital and reported losses include a calf and the barn contents. The blaze, fed by dry hay and straw, destroyed the barn on the Hoevener farm half a mile southeast of Seymour. cause undetermined and no other animals were harmed.
Patch tests given to 231 kindergarten and first grade students at Emerson Riley and St Ambrose Schools will be read Friday by Miss Willma Rose Smith health nurse and Mrs Florence Ebert executive secretary. Tests were conducted under the Jackson County Tuberculosis Association with option for absent children to take the test Friday with parental permission.
Jackson County begins deer season with modest turnout as 28 licenses issued, Patrick Knott from Seymour bags the first deer a 10 point weighing about 225 pounds from Brown County. Sheriff’s office acts as information station during the three day season. License price five dollars and hunting runs December 1 to 3 in multiple counties. Opening times are 6 48 a m Friday and 6 49 a m Saturday with a Saturday 4 21 p m closing.
No accidents were reported in Seymour Post No 7 and seven-county district during the first half of Safe Driving Day. One minor accident near Edinburgh was the only reported incident in Indiana, with state and local police pledging continued patrols to keep highways safe. Governor Craig urged continued road safety as 121 safety supervisors and truck executives planned 24 hour truck patrols.
Funeral services are planned for Genieve McKnight 27 of Jackson County after a Tuesday night crash on U S Route 50 near Bedford. She died Wednesday in Dunn Memorial Hospital from multiple injuries. Also killed was Jay Pullam 39 of Hayti Missouri in the same crash. Two other deaf mute passengers survived with serious injuries. McKnight’s sons aged 11 and Darel Lee will attend services. she had lived in a trailer on Shady Springs Tabernacle grounds. Survivors include her parents, two sons, three sisters and extended family.
The Methodist Men of the First Methodist Church observed their November meeting with charter members James Laupus Charles Hunterman and T S Sparks receiving Past President pins. Rev Harold Barnett led a devotional and an oyster stew supper followed by a preview of a Christmas breakfast program.

Albert Thurman Jaynes of Seymour pleads not guilty to two counts of DUI. John Almon Stepp of Gary pleads not guilty to one DUI count. Earl J. Carlisle withdraws guilty plea to one count and is fined fifty dollars with license suspension urged for one year. Other cases dismissed or set for trial in December.
Weather outlook predicts a rise in temperature tonight into Friday with occasional snow or snow mixed with rain. Rain is expected Friday and Saturday may bring more showers as a cold wave lingers. Indiana roads remain mostly clear though some northern-side ice and four inches of snow linger.
The Jackson County Tuberculosis Association reports receipts of 1408.50 from the annual Christmas seal sale, aims for 4800 this year, and urges residents to use seals on letters and packages. Township reports are still pending while funds support free chest clinics X rays and patch tests.
Seven CIO United Auto Workers strikers returned to their jobs at the Perfect Circle Corporation foundry in New Castle Indiana. It is the first callbacks since the union accepted a new contract on Tuesday.
A dog's heating pad overheated triggering a fire that consumed the dog's garage home and Walter Schmidt's residence near Madison Indiana. Schmidt his wife and four children escaped unharmed as volunteers battled the blaze for two hours despite freezing temperatures and limited water. Estimated damage stood at about 15000 dollars.
O. O. Swails of Seymour former Jackson Circuit Court judge spoke at the Lawrence County Bar Association dinner in Bedford. Judges Charles Batts and Chester A. Davis also addressed the gathering. Clarence J. Donovan was named president, with Wayne Baker as vice president and Robert Skinner as secretary treasurer succeeding retiring officers Rue Steele and Robert Short respectively.
The Special Political Committee opened a 60 member hearing on Canada’s plan to admit 18 applicants to the United Nations. Canada hopes for seven votes in the Security Council and two thirds in the Assembly, but Nationalist China and the Soviet Union threaten vetoes over several candidates. Top U S and UN officials met to press for progress as veto risks loom.
The Associated Press report details a nationwide SD Day traffic death toll. Ohio records four fatalities including Robert M. Johnson 44 of Centerville, and Illinois Indiana Louisiana New York report one each. Other fatalities include Gerald LaGrow 27 of the Navy, L T Ball 22 of Plymouth Michigan, Donald Mosher 23 of Glens Falls and Fred Nuter 58 of Rushville.
The American Federation of Labor approved merging with the CIO to create a single 16 million member labor federation. Approval came by a standing vote of shouting delegates at the AFL convention. A separate CIO convention was expected to approve the merger later today or Friday.
The White House Conference on Education urged nationwide action to address a teacher shortage and pressed for federal aid to schools, especially for buildings. Debates showed strong backing for building aid, while opinions varied on operating funding and federal control, with a preference for administering funds through the Office of Education via state agencies.
