Snowfall blanketed the area and ice on State Road 58 east of Kurtz caused a dramatic crash Sunday. Glen Hauck and his wife Gladys were pinned as their 1950 coach overturned near a bridge. their children were outside and unharmed as responders arrived.
Robert A. Creviston RD2 son of Mr and Mrs Harry Creviston landed in San Diego California Saturday morning after Navy service in Korea He enlisted June 7 1949 after graduating Shields High School He was on furlough last November and his final trip from the Far East went via Japan and Pearl Harbor before returning to Seymour pending discharge
Shields High School Girls Ensemble under David Davenport will perform at Seymour Rotary Club dinner tonight at 6 15 at the Elks Home. The program was arranged by C F Walter Voss, Rotary program chairman.
Eleven Jackson county men and one selective service transferee from another county boarded a bus at 7 30 this morning for the Joint Examining and Induction Station in Indianapolis. Names include Kenneth E. Hanner Hubert Noble Larue Bush Walter Weddle Richard Lee Lind Raymond L. Patman and others. Twelve more Jackson county men are set to report Wednesday for physical examinations.
Work started today on widening the fire station doorway at the city building on South Chestnut Street. W J Abraham and Sons Inc to install 14 foot wide electrically powered overhead doors replacing the 11.5 foot wide outward swinging doors. The expansion aids fire truck access while a temporary extension remains in use during remodeling contracted by the city council.
Pvt. Jack L. Hinton of Seymour Indiana has been selected to attend the eight week Field Wireman School at Camp Chaffee Arkansas. He will learn map reading military signs and symbols basic electricity 32 hours of pole climbing techniques and maneuvers with an infantry regiment and its artillery battalion. Hinton is a Shields High School graduate.
The Madison State Hospital asks local residents to donate games, handwork materials, magazines and records for occupational and recreational use. The Epsilon Sigma Alpha Sorority will collect items by December 20 and deliver them to the hospital for Christmas patients. Call Mrs. J. W. Ripley, Mrs. John Eglen or Mrs. Sanford L. Beard to arrange pickup.
K D Ferris president of the Seymour Optimist Club and a group of local Optimists drove to Indianapolis to present the Travel Gavel to the North Side Optimist Club at a noon luncheon in the Marott Hotel. Ralph Keyes arranged a skit on local activities and future plans as the gavel passes from Seymour to Indianapolis after a chain of transfers through Terre Haute and Evansville to Lafayette.
Dorothy Everdon and Miriam Hoefer kamp, Seymour juniors, were named to the Indiana University Student Foundation Committee. The group, appointed by IU President Herman B Wells, includes 52 new members and 23 holdovers. Next spring Bloomington hosts the third annual Little 500 bicycle race to raise funds for scholarships.

Roy Stein 22 Seymour was found guilty in city court Saturday for reckless driving after an automobile struck eight year old Paul E Ford of 515 East Third Street. Stein was fined 10 and $11.75 in costs by Mayor Donald L Herwig. The boy suffered a head bruise and a bruised heel.
Omer L. Taskey 61 died about noon Saturday at his son Delbert E. Taskey’s home 11234 South Chestnut Street after nine months illness. Funeral Tuesday 2 PM at Voss Mortuary with Rev. Leo Darnell, burial River View Cemetery. Survived by widow Goldie Anderson and ten children, plus two brothers, eight sisters, and 21 grandchildren. Taskey was a brickmason at Camp Atterbury and long-time Seymour resident.
Secretary of Labor Maurice Tobin urged the CIO to quickly merge with the AFL to present a united front to the incoming Republican administration. The CIO convention opened amid deep split over choosing a successor to Philip Murray as Walter Reuther and Allan Haywood vie for leadership amid union dynamics.
Mrs. Daisy Pilman, 71, died early Sunday at her sister’s home 315 South Chestnut after a 25 year illness. Born August 26, 1881, she was a lifelong city resident. survived by sister Mrs. John Lockmund and brother Wilson Jacobs. Funeral held Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. from Voss Mortuary, with burial in Riverview Cemetery.
Mrs Florence Faye Foster 34 of 404 East Second street Seymour died Sunday night at Schneck Memorial Hospital after years of illness. Born July 18 1918 in Seymour she was the daughter of Morgan L Sage and Estella Ferguson Sage. Survived by husband Albert K Foster eight children including Albert Jr Clarence Leroy Earl Melvin Iva Gertrude Sally Sue Dorothy Faye Carolyn Lou and Everett Wayne Foster a brother Roy M Sage a half brother Charles Adkins a sister Mrs Dorothy Thatcher and her father. Two children preceded her in death. Funeral 2 pm Wednesday at Voss Mortuary with Rev Eula Kennedy and Rev Leo Darnell in charge. Burial Riverview Cemetery. Mortuary after 5 pm Tuesday.
An automobile spun on slick pavement Sunday morning and struck a tree on North Elm street near West Sixth. Harry McGuire 17, of 919 North Elm, escaped injury though the left front of his car sustained about 55 dollars in damage. Police describe the skid as the result of a second gear stop for a stop sign.
Cpl Harold W Christopher son of Mr and Mrs John Christopher Seymour R3 was among 1377 Army combat veterans from Korea aboard the Gen Nelson M Walker when it docked in San Francisco. He served with Company K 5th Cavalry Regiment 1st Cavalry Division and earned the Combat Infantryman Badge UN Service Medal Army of Occupation Medal and Korean Service Medal. He entered the Army in January 1951.

An Associated Press forecast predicts rain sleet and snow across Indiana tonight and Tuesday with potential traffic snarls on slick highways. Snow starts in the west tonight and spreads east, mixing with rain as temperatures rise Tuesday ending the icy glaze. Seymour reports nearly four inches of snow, central Indiana two to three inches, tapering to little in the north. An icy U S bridge collision between a car and a truck is noted.
Seymour retail stores will be open Wednesday afternoons in December with a key exception for shoe stores. Shoes stay closed on most Wednesdays except December 24 when they stay open until 5 30 pm. Stores also open afternoons on December 3 10 17 and stay open nightly from December 19 to 23 until 9 pm.

Christine Jorgensen, a 26 year old Army veteran formerly George Jorgensen Jr., received sex reassignment surgery in Copenhagen Denmark. Doctors led by Dr Christian Hamburger administered hormones and operations to convert her sex, and secrecy surrounded the patient as the process neared completion.
