Town Conventions Name Nominees For November Elections
Brownstown, Crothersville, and Medora party conventions have chosen candidates for town offices to run in the November 5 elections. Republicans and Democrats nominated boards of trustees and clerks treasurers with Bruce Eastin leading Brownstown Republicans and Lester Greathouse presiding at Browns town Democrats. Medora nominees include Truman Branaman, Charles Plummer, Maurice Davis, and Gerald White for trustees and clerk treasurer.

Enrollment in Seymour Community Schools is expected to rise this year though exact totals will wait until next week after classes begin. Preliminary figures Friday show 3 463 students, up 16 from last year, with about 65 more expected next week. Hayden area students still attend Seymour schools though some shifts reduce first day totals.

Jackson County Council to Meet on Budget and Tax Levy
The Jackson County board of commissioners will convene Monday at the county courthouse for September’s regular session. The council begins a two day session Tuesday to review the 1964 budget and tax levy and related appropriations and reductions. The proposed 1964 tax levy totals 1.29 for county government with funds for general, welfare, schools, bridges and jail. Final rates await approval by the state tax board after hearings.

Jackson County election officials announced H Jack Spurgeon the county clerk will accept independent candidate filings for Seymour offices through midnight tonight with postmarked September 1 mail considered. The September 1 deadline falls on Sunday while Democrat and Republican tickets for Seymour are already filed for the November 5 election.

Luminous 1964 car tags unveiled by Seymour license chief
Norma Fettig, manager of the Seymour License Bureau, holds the new luminous 1964 passenger car plate beside the 1963 tag. The 1964 tag features a larger county number 36, a smaller city code C, and Indiana at the top. Fettig says 7,300 of the new tags were received and will go on sale January 2, 1964.

Traffic Heavy As Holiday Weekend Begins
Traffic on area highways was heavy as the long holiday weekend opened. Indiana state police planned full patrols with radar and helicopters to curb fatalities, while a 61 year old Indianapolis man died in Johnson County after losing control on U S 31. Lula Burr, 96, died in North Carolina from injuries in a July 28 one car crash near Amity.

Corn Packing At Brown Nears End One Of Best Crops Ever
Sweet corn canning at the Morgan Packing Company plant in Brownstown has begun to decline with about 85 percent of the processing done. Two weeks ago the plant processed 800 tons daily. now about 600 tons. Plant manager Neil Manaugh says two shifts average 15 hours per day, down from 20 at peak. About 500 workers are employed, down from 700. The corn quality lately is fair but not as high as two weeks ago. Jackson County has 4700 acres under contract. When the corn season ends in September the plant will shift to pumpkin processing.

Ditch Inspection Begins Across Jackson County
Jackson County will begin inspection of drainage ditches next week following a notice to property owners. County Surveyor Alfred L. Porgey said inspections start September 1 and run until all ditches are checked. Noncompliance after a 15 day notice leads to ditch cleaning at the owner's expense added to tax duplicates. Several county ditches fall under this order.

State Fair Opens Big Weekend in Indianapolis
Indiana State Fair marks International Day while opening harness racing and judging swine and sheep. Grand Circuit starts Monday as 14,000 more attend than last year. Pie sweepstakes won by Mrs. Robert L. Spencer of Thorntown. Lt. Gov. Ristine congratulated by telephone. A rooster owned by Jack Patterson of Thorntown led a crowing contest with 37 crows in 30 minutes.
