Shields Park buzzed as the ninth annual Jackson County Free Fair nears its close with large crowds and high hopes for a record turnout on the final night. Organizers credit strong attendance all week and predict one of the largest crowds of the event.
Cy Hoffmae will face a bear at 8:30 pm in the fair’s bear show with the manager guaranteeing a victory. Roy Harding appears at 9:15 pm to take a turn with the bear. Plans hint at Hoffmire versus Harding at 10:00 pm followed by a boxing match at the bear tent.
The Jackson County Fair concluded a week of record exhibits in live stock horticulture floriculture needlework and farm products with the largest displays ever and high premiums awarded to prize winners. The fair drew about eighteen thousand attendees Thursday for Seymour day as Brownstown sent a 100 car delegation and local officials welcomed visitors from Columbus and nearby towns.
Al Nuttle packs his truck as the fair winds down. Crowds linger at the industrial tents near the radio and music booths while Amos and Andy perform. Merchants haul displays, prize money changes hands, and novelty painters boast ornate vases in futuristic decor.
Augusto B. Leguia the 67 year old deposed president of Peru was moved from his sick bed to a prison cell on San Lorenzo Isle Harbor awaiting trial for actions during his dictatorship His son Juan Leguia was also arrested and sent to the same prison under guard led by Lieutenant Alfonso Liesa who had been released this week with the new regime.
Ransom Wariner aged 64 of 502 East Tipton street died at 1 05 this afternoon after a six month illness with complications. Funeral from his East Tipton home Monday at 2 pm. Burial in Riverview cemetery. Born September 4 1865 in Washington county he married there in 1890 and moved to Seymour in 1895 with his family. Wife died two years ago. Surviving are two sons Clarence and Arthur of this city two brothers Joe of Mateland Iowa and William of
Registration in Seymour schools on September 4 and 5 aims to give students longer to buy books and supplies. All pupils meet at 8:30 for enrollment, book lists, and class scheduling, with the day counting as a school day to reduce May makeups. Parents urged to send children on opening day.
Seymour will suspend business Monday for Labor Day with stores and factories closing. Some meat markets may open in the morning while post office service and mail deliveries are halted. no formal celebration is planned, leaving observance to individuals.

Mrs. Sarah Grace Lattimore aged 52 died at her North Vernon home at 2 o clock this morning after a nine hour illness from a stroke. Funeral services will be Monday at 2 at the North Vernon Methodist church with Rev. Hart officiating. Burial will be in North Vernon cemetery. Survived by husband Forrest Lattimore a daughter Mrs. Doris Corvea a son Walter Lattimore a brother Hobart Evans and two sisters Mrs. Hazel Frazee and Mrs. Gladys Smith all of nearby towns. She was a member of the Methodist church.
The Indiana State Fair opens with free admission for children under 12 on Boys' and Girls' Day. More than 1,600 hog exhibitors and a large swine show are expected, along with harness racing, vaudeville, 4-H parades, and midweek radio broadcasts from WFBM WKBF and WLS.

Alma Jean is recovering at Riley Memorial Hospital where doctors say she needs more blood for a transfusion to aid recovery.
Elkhart Indiana August 30 a 12 year old Angora cat named Busy spent ten days under eight tons of coal to save at least one life. Mrs Elliot St Beech moved coal after hearing noises and Busy emerged weak but alive to return home.
Maurice Ahlbrand of Seymour is listed among Valparaiso University second semester scholarship recipients for 1929 1930. He completed the freshman year in liberal arts with a 2.2 scholastic standing. The university, controlled by Lutheran laymen of the Evangelical Lutheran Synodical Conference, is fully accredited.
Amarillo attorney A. D. Payne who confessed planting an infernal machine in the family car to kill his wife and maim their son killed himself in his Amarillo jail cell by detonating the device beneath him as he lay on a cot early today.
At Curtiss-Reynolds Airport in Chicago the national air races entered their eighth day with three fatalities this week. George Fernie of Staten Island died in a self-built aircraft featuring a short auxiliary wing, crashing far from the crowd and injuring no one else. Earlier fatalities stemmed from a navy racing plane crash near the stands. News covered ongoing races, Lindberghs departure for Detroit, and anticipated arrivals of von Gronau and his crew in a Dornier-War flying boat as crowds awaited new aviation milestones.
Police hold a 30 year old Mishawaka man named James M Name as a suspect in the murder of 8 year old Marveline Appel and an attack on Mrs. Joseph Wisniewski. Authorities report bloodstains on a car and say four suspects were detained. A $2 000 reward from the city $500 from St Joseph County and $100 from a paper are offered for the capture of the slayer. Prosecutor Harry S Taylor vows swift grand jury action and heavy precautions to prevent mob violence.
