Shields Junior High School released Tuesday morning room assignments for organization day. Principal Joe Pitman announced enrollments and class placements with rooms specified for special education in Room 22 and seventh and eighth grade groupings listed by student last names and teachers.
Purdue University through its Self supporting Supervision Programs offers a three day Dynamics of Effective Supervision workshop for supervisors in Seymour September 12 13 and 14 at the Holiday Inn East Tipton Street The course aims to impart management role understanding develop a sound philosophy and teach processes used to achieve company objectives Reservations are advised by September 11 at 317 264 4501. The State Board of Animal Health reports a mild rabies outbreak in southern and southeastern Marion County with nine cases since March. Skunk cases appear in Johnson Henry Rush Clinton Madison counties. Dr G Robert Oldham urges vaccination for dogs and cats.
Mishawaka couple Mr. and Mrs. Ken Parsons and neighbors alerted and acted to save the Henry F. Roettger residence after flames erupted from the garage on U.S. 50 between Seymour and Brownstown. Parsons used an axe to entry the garage while Jeff Schneider aided the effort, preventing disaster.
Several hundred Central Indiana dealers plan a three day protest over Phase 4 rules causing most Standard and Marathon outlets in Indianapolis area to close through Sunday. Terre Haute Bloomington New Castle and other cities also affected with partial participation. Motorsits stock up as turnout threatens Indiana State Fair receipts.
Carson and Barnes circus, billed as the largest still under the big top, will stage two shows at 4 and 8 p m on Sept 4 in Seymour. The event, sponsored by Donald M Winn Lodge 108 FOP, features 22 elephants 30 monkeys a giraffe and other exotic animals plus a portable zoo. Early Sept 4 about 40 trucks will deliver to A avenue North for setup.
Jackson County and statewide cantaloupe and watermelon production show a long term decline from 1950s peaks. Acreage dropped from 306 in 1959 to 218 in 1969 for melons, with 70 acres harvested in 1971. Cantaloupe production fell from 624 acres in 1954 to 70 acres in 1971, while Hoosier cantaloupe value hovered around 1.77 million dollars. Local growers note dwindling numbers since the mid century, shifting shipping patterns, and a lingering but fading regional fame for Jackson County melons.
The Vernon Forks Conservancy District board will meet at 8 p m in North Vernon to adopt a proposed 9 cent budget and tax levy for counties Jackson Jennings Ripley and Decatur. The levy lowers the current 17 cent rate and funds estimated taxes of $25,084 on $31.13 million in net property value. Taxpayers may appear to be heard at the meeting.

National Weather Service says fair skies return tonight with sunny Saturday and highs in the mid to upper 80s. The extended outlook calls for continued fair weather through Tuesday with overnight lows in the 60s.
