Allied columns drive through the Seine valley in a sweeping encirclement around German forces retreating from Normandy. US Third Army advances from Mantes, Canadians seize Caenbour and Le Havre area gains. Paris area heavy fighting and German losses mount as tanks destroyed and prisoners increasing.
Heavy rainfall totaling 1.34 inches across the county dampened attendance at the opening night of the Jackson County Free Fair held at the fairgrounds on State Road 250 east of Brownstown. Officials noted crop benefits and cooler temperatures, while transport constraints due to gasoline rationing limited exhibits and crowd size.
Private First Class Raymond Mackey age twenty four was seriously wounded in action in France on August 7 reports a War Department telegram to his brother Earl Mackey of East Second street. Mackey enlisted October 1942 served overseas since February 1 this year and is with an infantry division. He worked at Parker Davis farm near Azalia and lived with his mother Emma Mackey in Seymour before her move to Texas. Mackey attended Bobtown and has been a familiar figure in Seymour.
Heavy Monday rainfall lifts White River at Rockford by two inches to stand five inches above the low water mark. Local authorities monitor flood risk as water levels rise.

Mrs. Clara Drees aged eighty eight died at her Cincinnati home after a fractured hip. She lived in Seymour twenty years, later moving away, and was mother of Ed Drees of Woodstock. Survived by three daughters Laura Clara and Mrs Pearl Motch of Cincinnati and a son Ed Drees of Woodstock. Funeral arrangements to be announced.
The United Brethren Indiana Conference completed a weeklong session at Maple Grove Camp Ground near Huntingburg and named three new ministers for Jackson County. Rev Kenneth Angle moves from Montgomery to Seymour to lead the local church starting with 10 AM service next Sunday and 8 PM worship, with plans to move to the parsonage next week. The Rev Leon Taylor continues his two year tenure at the local church as assignments are announced.
Mrs George Huffman has been removed from the critical list after a confinement delivery at Coleman Hospital Indianapolis. Aviation Student George Huffman arrived in Indianapolis to see his wife during visiting hours while the newborn Judith Ann remains in the care of the hospital.
Film actress Myrna Ley filed for divorce from John Hertz an advertising executive of New York on grounds of incompatibility in Cuernavaca Mexico. The suit was announced by her studio on Monday night.
Washington August 22 AP Five more blue stamps for buying processed foods G5 and L5 in Ration Book Four will become valid September 1 the Office of Price Administration said today. They will be good indefinitely.

Yankee armor crosses the Seine at Fontainbleau fifty five miles from Belleau Wood and Chateau Thierry where U S forces faced German troops in the second Marne. The September 9 French halt at La Fre Champenoise halted the German center and shifted the drive toward Paris.

Soviet forces crossed the Bug River northeast of Warsaw and pressed toward the Vistula as Rokossovsky regrouped armies pushed two columns toward the confluence. German reserves on the west bank faced repeated tank- and air-supported counterattacks, with Izvestia reporting a new Italian tank division joining the line.
