Area Firefighting Teams Rush to Contain Northwest Blaze Crisis
Brownstown District Indiana and Ohio crews joined 16 major fires across 93 000 acres as the West faced a severe forest fire emergency. Teams flew to California to battle Granite Fire near the Stanislaus National Forest while others moved to Boise Idaho to assist in fires across Idaho and Montana. By week’s end 156 735 acres had burned with no fatalities reported among firefighters.

Teacher Group Seeks Recognition as Exclusive Representative
The Seymour Education Association announced it has sent a request to the Seymour Community School Corporation school board to be recognized as the exclusive representative for all teachers. President Richard Johnson said the group includes a majority of eligible members and urged board action under Public Law 217 requiring bargaining with the exclusive representative.

Detained Youth Is Released In North Bartholomew County Burglary Case
Tim Carroll 20 of Columbus was released after police found he had no involvement in the attempted burglary near the Bartholomew Shelby Decatur county lines close to Hope. Lynn Ivy 16 of Edinburg and James Yorn 17 with no address were arrested at the scene. both are escapees from Boys School at Plainfield. Carroll was not an escapee and faced no charges.

Fair Mild Weather Across Indiana With Storms Northern Region
Thunderstorms moved over northern Indiana today while southern areas kept fair mild weather. A weak front in the north will bring more storms and showers with cooler air behind it. Southern Indiana remains warm with possible Thursday showers and generally mild conditions midweek. Low 60s to highs in the 80s are forecast. Ruth Everhart logged 88 for Sunday and 65 overnight. East Fork White River at Rockford was 2.9 feet at 7 am.

Nixon Motorcade Cancelled Amid New Orleans Plot
In New Orleans plans for a presidential motorcade to attend the Veterans of Foreign Wars convention were cancelled after the Secret Service uncovered a possible plot to assassinate President Nixon. Police Seek Owners Of Lost Bicycles
City police are trying to locate the owners of about 30 bicycles found abandoned around the city in recent weeks. Bicycles include boys and girls models and a tandem, many in excellent condition with added accessories. Parents are urged to check if their child’s bike is missing and contact the police.
Purdue Courses Set At SHS
Two graduate Purdue University courses for teachers will be offered at Seymour High School in fall 1973. Courses are math for elementary teachers I and science for elementary teachers I, each $75 and three graduate credits. Class runs Thursdays 6:30 to 9:30 from Sep 13 to Dec 29, with a spring 1974 follow-up.

Wayne and Hoosier National Forests drop most recreation user fees under the Golden Eagle Passport law. Only Hardin Ridge remains free for boat launching, while concession services at Vesuvius continue with fees. About 30 of 260 eastern region sites qualify for charges. Fire destroys large barn at Seymour residence
Hamilton Township Volunteer Fire Department responded with 12 men and two trucks to a 6 am barn fire at the Jack Anderson home in Seymour R5. Pershing Township Volunteer Fire Department sent a truck and 10 men from Freetown to assist. The frame barn was fully engulfed upon arrival and the cause was undetermined.
