Seymour leads as a strong retail hub with high income and spending. The year’s sales totaled 23 843 000, up from 21 972 000, and net earnings rose to 22 059 000. Seymour’s index of sales production is 160, about 60 percent above the national average.
The 1964 county budget proposal shows eight townships cutting poor relief rates, three increasing, and one staying the same. Morgan Packing Company in Brownstown reports peak sweet corn canning with 700 workers on two shifts. Neil Manaugh says this crop is probably one of the best ever, aided by favorable weather and better farming practices. About 800 tons daily processed, with season to run another week, ending September 10 before pumpkin shift begins September 25. 4,700 Jackson County acres under contract.
The Indiana state highway commission begins applying durable thermo plastic lane markers in the Seymour district starting Columbus today. Perma-Line Midwest Corp. leads the job, with 81 Indiana cities planned under the program. Work in Seymour is due next week and two weeks remain for completion across the district pending weather.

Two Seymour Civil Air Patrol members joined the hunt for a Mundie family plane missing more than a week. The CAP outlined a search area from the Ohio River to Muncie with plans for a Connersville sub-base and Kentucky units near Markland Dam. An aerial search near Greencastle was called off. witnesses reported a low flying plane circling last Friday. The operation has covered 15 785 square miles with 92 aircraft and 368 people lending aid. flying time exceeds 388 hours.
Tom Bollinger a Red Cross life saving instructor will teach a senior life saving class at Seymour Municipal Swimming Pool Shields Park starting Monday night if enough interest is shown. The class runs one week at 7 p m and requires students to be 16 or older.
British police press a weekend treasure hunt for the remaining seven million dollars from the Glasgow to London mail train robbery. Four bags totaling about 282 thousand dollars were found in Surrey, while two men in Bournemouth were charged with robbing the mail train and others charged with receiving loot.
The U S building and post office project at Fourth and Chestnut will start pouring concrete footings Monday. J W Bateson Construction of Dallas oversees the $322 773 project with 15 1/2 tons of steel planned for the footing and walls. Completion is targeted for March 29, 1964.
A 300 ton ferry with 194 passengers and 15 crew sank in heavy seas off Okinawa. US forces rescued 154 survivors, including four Americans. two bodies recovered. The Midori Maru departed Naha for Kumejima four miles north of Maejima.

Police search for a hit and run vehicle after Mrs. Anta Belle Shoopman 49 of Mitchell was struck and killed while walking on Indiana 37 north of Mitchell around 1 a m. The car fled the scene. Mrs. Shoopman and her husband had been drinking, and a motorist reported she flagged him down shortly before the crash. This marks the second fatality in eight counties this August.
