Hal Boyle reports from a Fifth Airforce plane over Waegwan Korea describing 98 B 29 bombers striking a 21 square mile target north of Waegwan. The attack lays waste to an infantry and tank force near Taegu as smoke, fire, and explosions blot the area.
Seymour's city council debated separating the police department from political influence. Four councilmen blocked the measure, insisting on further study. Councilman Boicourt offered a first reading but failed to advance the motion. City attorney Montgomery noted readings could amend or reject the ordinance later.
Plans announced for Seymour’s annual Back-to-School show at Majestic Theater Saturday at 10 AM. Sponsored by the Seymour Chamber of Commerce Retail Promotion Committee, the event is for children only with free tickets from local chamber stores. Jee Majestic will present a film program with contests and a post show treat funded by the retail division.
Harold Houston, pastor of the Freetown Christian Church for the past year, has resigned his ministry and will deliver his final sermon next Sunday August 20. He plans to attend Cincinnati Bible College and seek a nearby pastorate after graduation.
Texas Eastern Transmission Corporation announced hydrostatic tests will start August 18 or 19 on the Little Big Inch pipeline in east Jackson north Jennings and south Decatur counties. The tests, part of an rehabilitation program for the line, will run daily for 21 miles from Reddington to east of Westport with field HQ at North Vernon Airport.
Jackson county reports 516 boys and girls completed 1 191 4-H club projects at the Jackson County Fair the largest total in history. Compared with last year 449 members finished 1 002 projects, up 14.92 percent and 18.87 percent respectively.
A crowded air conditioned Masonic lodge room heard the investiture ceremony for two Seyour Chapter DeMolay Chevaliers. Jonald Paul Woolls and James Richard Snow received the Chevalier degree with remarks from A D Oell and Charles R Rayfield.

Instrumental instruction part of the public schools summer schedule will be resumed this week. Frank Cofield announces the schedule with woodwind at 9 a.m. Thursday and brass at 10 a.m. followed by the intermediate band at 11 a.m. Friday. Uniforms are being issued to senior band members in preparation for the new school year and football season.

Three Jackson county pastors and lay members travel to Maple Grove Camp near Huntingburg for the 121st annual Indiana Conference session of the Evangelical United Brethren Church. The gathering includes the sesquicentennial celebration of the church founded in 1800 and a key merger vote between Indiana conferences. Rev. Kenneth P. Angle from Seymour attends with others from the county.
A Washington doctor argues that polio requires a wound to enable virus invasion. Dr James G Cumming cites higher summer injury rates among children as a factor and notes natural tooth cavities tonsillectomies and accidental wounds could disrupt nerve fibers making infection more likely if virus enters the wound.
Washington reports Maj. Gen. Lewis B. Hershey, selective service director, indicates current world events may push draft calls beyond the 185,000 authorized. He notes September and October calls total 100,000, with possible increases in November. Indiana projects 1,450 for November, plus 2,500 Hoosiers and about 1,000 reservists to undergo examinations.
The House approved a bill to restore city mail deliveries to two per day and overturn an April order cutting home deliveries to one daily. The 264 to 108 vote sends the measure to the Senate, with a companion bill already approved. President Truman could veto the proposal.
