Performers show improvement after early hitches at Brownstown Fair with 4 H Club dress revue and free acts praised. Outdoor stage, no welcome speech, group parade, and nightly features mark the event though county funds limit prizes and exhibits this year.
Fair program lists Wednesday night events from 7 to 10:40 with Osai Troupe Erma Trio Aerial Flowers Trio and slide show. Thursday afternoon includes band concerts 1:30 to 4:00 and a 2:30 Osai Troupe plus a 5:10 Prince Hoshi demonstration.
As Jackson County Free Fair nears midweek, judging of 4H exhibits nears completion amid poor crop conditions. Purdue extension workers rate local entries on par with state fairs. Brownstown Night draws a large crowd with a coordinated parade from Brownstown to Tipton Street, escorted by state police and volunteers. Parking plans include angled spaces along Sixth Street to accommodate visitors.

A second stand shut down late Tuesday after fair authorities and police received reports.
A new permanent registration system begins January 15 1934 as Dr Thomas EB Conner clerk of the Jackson Circuit Court explains the 1955 law costs about 25 cents per eligible voter. Registration records become permanent and do not require re registration unless cancelled or disfranchised. County funds cover the expense.
Local NRA celebration planned for Tuesday night with a parade as the feature. I L Frost chairs the planning committee and invites civic groups and firms to participate with floats bands and insignia displays. Directors urge county to join Indianapolis state NRA event so locals can attend both. Gen Hugh S Johnson may address the Indianapolis mass meeting and a Roosevelt remote address is hoped.
Judge John C. Branaman of Brownstown in the Jackson Lawrence judicial circuit named six of seven Lawrence County Tax Adjustment Board members. The seventh seat will be filled by the county council. Branaman had already appointed the Jackson County board last week and went to Bedford this week to appoint the Lawrence County panel.
Leo Lucas of Brownstown was reported to be much improved at Sechneck Memorial Hospital after sustaining six fractured ribs and other injuries when his Bolles Hardware Company truck struck a light pole on U S Route 50 near Road 35. He was admitted Tuesday afternoon following the late Monday accident.
Havana reports a government probe into bank accounts and properties of former President Gerardo Machado and his followers to permit possible requisition. Em embargoes on Machado assets are planned and charges of misappropriation, fraud, homicide, and swindles are filed in Havana. Charles Manuel De Cespedes government vows no aid to officials seeking to evade justice.
A young man from a conservation camp near Henryville, named George Shofield, told Scottsburg officers he was from Chicago close to Al Capone. He was fined $1 and costs in magistrate court for public intoxication.
Mark H. Shank of Akron Ohio confessed to poisoning four members of a Malvern Arkansas family after a car crash led police to the scene. Victims Alvin Coley 40 his wife Ethel 35 and sons Clyde 11 and Clarence 7 died. a fourth child Clement 4 survived. Shank pleaded for leniency and promised a full statement later.
United Brethren ministers from Jackson county join the Fortieth Indiana conference opening at First United Brethren Church in Washington Indiana. Bishop H. H. Feut of Indianapolis to officially open the conference today. Rev J B Greathouse of Freetown attends from the local area.
Washington reports vexing difficulties in drafting trade codes for steel, oil, coal, and automobiles as NRA aims to unify business under minimum wages and maximum hours. Administrator Hugh S. Johnson, backed by President Roosevelt, pressures quick agreements to include 4 to 5 million workers.
Mahatma Gandhi began at noon a hunger strike that he said would last until death. He is jailed for a year after arrest on August 1 for disobedience and is demanding full rights as a political prisoner. He hopes to use the protest to revive efforts against untouchability and press constraints.
J. N. Shannahan confirms Public Service Company of Indiana signs the Roosevelt backed National Code for gas and electric industries. He says Indiana utilities move quickly to join the recovery program and will cooperate to the fullest with customers and state residents.
Robert Collins of Cincinnati was admitted to Schneck Memorial Hospital around 8:30 AM with injuries from an accident in the Baltimore and Ohio railroad yards. He reportedly ran to board a westbound freight train and struck a water crane. doctors say injuries are not believed serious.
Washington reports the justice department is preparing cases against gold hoarders who refused to surrender gold pulled from banks during the March crisis. About 280 individuals still hold 845,025 dollars, while 27 million 481 thousand 498 dollars were voluntarily returned to banks. Over 5,000 names were investigated and warned of penalties up to ten years in prison or a 10,000 dollar fine or both.
Christian A Branaman aged 69 of Bedford died at home from a cerebral hemorrhage suffered Friday evening after years of heart trouble. Born July 11 1864 in Jackson County he married Fiftie Browning in 1891 and Annie Applewhite in 1897. Survived by widow son Glenn Branaman daughter Leis Litzler a half brother Bruce Branaman and three grandchildren. Funeral at Day and Carter Chapel Bedford with Rev Harry T Bridwell. Burial Pairview Brownstown.
Police say the large coordinated stakeout failed to net the kidnap gang linked to a ransom case involving John Factor. Three days of planning with 300 officers, aircraft and wireless gear ended as two suspects fled in a gunfire burst, with associates detained and a saloon raid yielding clues.
James H. Tatlock of town, county suorof schools, starts a new four year term as head of the Jackson County Board of Education. He was reelected at June meetings in Brownstown and completes a pending slate of tasks for the fall term and for the Jackson County Teachers Institute set for September 2 at the courthouse.
