The fair at Shields Park is officially opening at 7 30 tonight with mayor Burkart representing the association. A complete program of free acts will debut here for the first time as crowds fill the park during final preparations.
A barbecue stand at the Jackson County Free Fair was destroyed by fire about 3:45 this morning. Oscar Mallory of Connerville owns it and Mrs. Mallory ran it, with the blaze near the bandstand on the midway. Gasoline in the tent fed the flames and an explosion followed. Seymour firemen fought the blaze but could not save the stand. The loss is estimated above 1,000.
The fair runs Monday with a Sey mour Concert Band 7 to 7 30 directed by Adolph Steinwedel then a mayoral address by C W Burkart at 7 30. Osai Troupe performs followed by Erma Duo hand balancing and a band concert. Aerial Flowers Trio and Prince Hoshi closing acts precede late events. Tuesday features band concerts Osai Troupe Erma Duo and a timed Slide for Life judging.
Shields Park readies for the twelfth Jackson County Fair with a 7 pm opening concert by the Seymour Concert Band directed by Adolph Steimwedel. Mayor C W Burkart will dedicate the fair at 7 30 as grounds and exhibits are prepared, with volunteers and officials arranging tents displays and entries for judging.
Roosevelt observes Cuba with concern as the county fair nears opening. An NRA group participates, with potential strike threats discussed. Readers are reminded to visit the Pair and the Cub.
Exhibits from 4-H clubs arrive for the Jackson County Free Fair with beef and dairy cattle housed at the park shelter. The Sunday night union service at First M E Church featured a program by the A M E Church choir with Ar chie Shelton Lanie Davis James Compton Sr Clarence Davis and guest Rev I C Mitchell of Indianapolis delivering the sermon. Mitchell stressed self denial and following Jesus while the quartet performed a string of Negro spirituals before and after the address.
Garrish Dobson of this city pleaded not guilty at city court arraignment on a charge of stealing gasoline. Bond was set at 1000 but he could not make it and remained in city jail. Police report say he was caught at 2 20 morning by John Sage, watchman at the state highway garage Broadway and Oak streets. Trial scheduled for 4 this afternoon.
Mrs. Emma Wickler a 79 year old widow died at Dukes Memorial hospital Sunday night from burns suffered when her apron caught fire while leaning over a cast stove at noon. Her clothing fully burned before her son Alex 31 rolled her in a rug to extinguish the flames.
Forrest Paulis of Cincinnati sustained severe bruises after a collision with Marion Foster of Uniontown on U S Route 50 near the Mapleton Inn curve Sunday night. Foster's car carried two men two women and three children. both cars were lightly damaged. Patrolman J R DeLong investigated.
Local groups form plans for Seymour participation in the state NRA celebration in Indianapolis. A committee will decide the local event timing likely delaying until the next day. Officials aim to field at least two floats musical groups and a large county delegation from Jackson County for the parade and mass meeting.
Indiana Kiwanis groups aim to boost morale of civilian conservation corps members at Browns Town and North Vernon camps and other state sites. District Governor Paul McKee urges clubs to contact young men in the camps and offer leisure activities during spare time with Bedford and Columbus as nearby club hubs.

Herbert Wente of this city told Seymour police he was robbed while walking east on Sixth Street after leaving a North Poplar street residence. A man stepped from an alley, demanded money, and Wente surrendered a one dollar bill. Police described the bandit as a hobos-like figure. investigation continues with no clue.
The body of Mary Pitassi nine-year-old Chicago girl who died from burns after a car accident Friday morning was sent to Louisville for burial from a local mortuary. Her father Sam Pitassi arrived from Chicago Sunday and funeral arrangements are not learned. Her mother Mrs Josephina Pitassi, injured when the car overturned and destroyed by fire, is improving.
About 15 000 farmers from Wisconsin, Michigan and Illinois urged a third potential milk strike. At a Dodge County unit picnic, leaders ordered one minute notice to withhold milk if the pool directs it. Walter Singer cited cheese prices near 10 cents. first strike was last February.
Aug 14 in Valparaiso Indiana motion approved to discontinue the last rural post offices in Crisman Wheeler Boone Grove and Metool due to economy. All towns now have free rural delivery service.
Public Service Co of Indiana received another time extension in the south system electric rate reduction case after advising the Public Service Commission on whether to sign the NRA code. John N. Shanahan said signing the code would affect the case. Perry McCart warned the commission could react differently. The request for a three month extension was cut to a deadline of September 11.
Col. Orestes Ferrara once Cuban secretary of state and advocate of autonomous Cuba arrived in the United States amid exile from the Machado regime. He and his wife traveled from Miami to Richmond before heading to New York, reflecting his controversial role in Cuban politics and his bid to end Platt amendment influence. General Alberto Herrera and family were smuggled aboard a steamship to Jamaica, departing from Havana as part of a separate evacuation.
President Roosevelt approves limited naval moves to Cuba amid domestic disturbances. Two destroyers Taylor and Claxton with 100 men reach Havana at 1:35 p.m. to protect American citizens while Cuba’s new government under Carlos Manuel de Cespedes aims to restore order.
