City officials approve a 1.87 tax rate for 1957 after correcting budget errors, raising an estimated 240 949 in taxes. The increase from 1.14 to 1.87 reflects a low four year budget and excludes aviation street and alleys parking meters and police pensions.
Carr township trustee Thomas W. Harl issues a notice to taxpayers announcing a meeting on August 28 to consider additional appropriations totaling 2075 for the special school funds. Of this, 2000 is for school supplies and 75 covers OASI contributions for employees.
Brownstown Consolidated Schools plan a 1957 budget of 119,910 dollars, with the same 2.05 per 100 property levy as 1956. Bond costs drop slightly but are offset by higher special school fund rates, while tuition and poll tax allocations remain steady. total rises 5,470 dollars due to increased valuations, final board approval set for August 30.
Jackson counties first Muscular Dystrophy chapter held an organizational meeting at the Glen Zabel home Brownstown naming four major committees for the association. Donald L. Herwig led the Patient Care Committee and an Education Committee was formed for Miss Jolly to finish her schooling. A September 4 general meeting at the Zabels will map a fundraiser set for October 1 to November 15.
At its August meeting the Seymour Community Schools board proposed a total levy of 2.91 per 100 in 1957, up 14 cents to raise 29 000 for higher enrollment and new costs. New president Everett Donica, secretary Lester Swengel, and treasurer Granger Smith were elected. The board notes tuition and special funds rise due to salaries and more teachers, while building and bond levies adjust to fund needs. The levy will be decided August 30.
At a meeting of the Jackson County Board of Commissioners at the county courthouse, the resignation of county health nurse Mildred Bullerdick was accepted effective September 1, 1956. She served just over two years. The board also adopted a plats and subdivisions resolution and discussed the 1957 budget.
Jackson County fairgoers can visit the Jackson County Heart Committee booth this week to learn about the Heart Fund work and a weight control program sponsored by the Heart Association. Free folders detail heart disease and rheumatic fever prevention, memorial gifts, and the exhibit was set up by Heart Committee members with Grace Rarick of Bloomington assisting. Seymour Business and Professional Women's Club members will attend the booth during the fair.
The river rose to 18 feet on Monday setting an official record for the day. Weather officials noted the level as the highest since records began and urged caution for nearby residents and travelers along the riverbanks.

Tonight at 7 CST Jimmy Downey Enterprises presents an all-star revue. Veterans Day events are planned Wednesdayalong with dairy cattle poultry and a dog show. Monday’s grandstand hosted a tractor pulling contest awarding top prizes of 40 and 40 with several drivers feeling the heat of competition.

Lawrence H. Cox has been appointed minister of the Scottsburg District of the Seventh day Adventist Church including the Seymour Madison and Scottsburg churches. He and Mrs. Cox, formerly of Olean New York, reside in Scottsburg with their three children Herbert Nine Hazel and Yvonne 18. Yvonne attends Atlantic Union College in South Lancaster Massachusetts. Elder Cox spoke on Fellowship with Christ from First Corinthians 1 9 and planned evangelistic meetings at the Bible Auditorium Fourth and Cherry streets Austin nightly at 7 30 through August 24.

U S Steel Corp raised its price an average of 8.50 per ton and Republic Steel followed with an increase effective today. Bethlehem Steel and Jones Laughlin said they are studying the price situation while the composite steel price stood near 130 per ton before the five week strike ended.

He notes Bulganin’s unilateral force cuts proposal and delays due to his illness.
