A head on collision southeast of Seymour left Charles Dean Waldrup of Tampa dead from a fractured skull. Three others, including Breste Lee Royal of Screven and Ed Williams of Louisville, were hospitalized in grave or serious condition. The wreck halted U S Road 31 for over four hours near the first bridge.
A major Sunday crash on U S Road 31 near Seymour left three men injured and one with facial injuries after a head on collision between a car driven by Marvin K. Antle and a southbound tractor trailer. Antle and two passengers were treated at Schneck Memorial Hospital. a charge was expected. A separate 8:30 p m mishap near a drive in theater left no injuries. A church service at Shields Park drew a large crowd as Rev. Kenneth P. Angle preached on Joshua with the Seymour Ministerial Association hosting and Miss Bernice Grubbs directing music. In Korea, U S Marines and Army infantry launched a 20 mile wide assault, with about 9 000 U S personnel and South Korean commandos clashing with the North Korean Sixth Division backed by the Red First Division. B 29 bombers hit Pyongyang and Wonsan as the Eighth Army reported heavy enemy casualties and strong air support.</S>
A free information tent sponsored by the Christian churches of Jackson County operates at the county fairgrounds this week. Volunteers provide ice water and reading material, with religious movies shown each night at 8 and 9 30. Harold Barnett directs the tent which welcomes fairgoers without charges.
Thomas Trotter a 15 year old from Sumour RI was treated after a car crash near Reddington. He suffered a broken leg and head chest injuries and was released from Schneck Memorial Hospital. Chester Horning 17 from Armour RI remains in serious condition with multiple lacerations head chest injuries.
Company B of the 138th Heavy Tank Battalion resumes training with Indiana's 38th Division at Camp Atterbury after a weekend break. Artillery and tank firing scheduled, three days in the field later this week. Maj. Gen. Jesse E. McIntosh reports the first week progress as well pleased. Morale among 16 chaplains remains high with fewer issues noted since the division's 1946 reorganization. Major Russell C. Prohl, Redeemer Lutheran Church pastor, serves among the chaplains with the 293rd Infantry Regiment.
Russell Milton Grider of Indianapolis, operator of an Indianapolis taxicab, was arrested in Wallonia after reports of driving antics. He faces a charge of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence. The charge was filed in Jackson Circuit Court at Browns town. The arrest was by Officer Frank B. Gray of the Seymour state police post and Deputy Lester Greathouse of Jackson county.
Three bids were received for repair and alterations to the electrical service and distribution system in the Brownstown grade school building but all exceeded the appropriation. Brownstown board president Charles R. Robertson said no further action was planned at present.
During a three hour truck weighing at the permanent pit scales on U S Road 31 east of Seymour five arrests were made. Three drivers were cited for operating overweight trucks with one vehicle 5660 pounds over weight. arraignments set in Jackson Circuit Court at Brownstown and in Seymour justice court. Two oil tank drivers were cited for unreasonable speed near Kriete curve. They are Richard Norris McClister of Fairplay Kentucky and Clyde Nelse Pendleton of Columbia Kentucky. Officer Frank B Gray and Cpl Jack Curry led the operation from Seymour state police post.
Official maximum Sunday and official minimum noted with readings at 10 a m. River stage stood at 2.4 feet.
John Robert Thompson, 26, arrested near Seymour after attacking a Louisville couple, pled guilty to robbery. Judge James L. Bottorff sentenced him to 10 to 25 years in state prison and revoked his voting rights for 15 years. Victims were Paul B. Greenwell and Anna Greenwell of 4311 Vermont Street.
Paris pledges a three year rearmament program to meet Communist threats and asks Britain and the United States to station enough divisions in continental Europe. France will spend about 5.71 billion dollars and raise immediate military spending to 500 billion francs next year to equip the army with 15 new divisions. Britain Denmark and Norway have similar plans with U S aid.
Clarence Robins of the Indiana State Teachers' Association will address the Seymour Rotary Club dinner at the Elks Club tonight at 6 15 PM. Adolph Zollman, chair of tonight's program, will introduce the speaker.
Five Jackson county students are named on Purdue University's distinguished list for the second semester. Eligibility requires a grade point index of five on six subjects, as confirmed by registrar C E Dammon's office after final grade checks. The county honorees include Ervin H Stahl Brownstown, Joe B Butler Crothersville, Raymond B Lockman Norman, Robert L Nance Wallonia, and Maurice L Horton Norman.
Entries flowed into the Jackson County fairgrounds as the 1950 fair opened with horse shows and fast gathering for open and 4-H divisions and Farm Bureau exhibits. Sunday saw afternoon and evening horse events with bicycle race finals set for 7 15 p m and winners including Ivan Morgan on Toy Major and Bobby Gillespie on Show Bubbles plus Moonstreak on various classes.
The Army announced 2616 confirmed casualties from the Korean conflict through August 6, including 153 killed, 1590 wounded, and 873 missing. Spokesmen stressed careful, dignified notification to families and noted daily fluctuations in missing in action totals.
Mayor Donald L. Herwig presided over numerous weekend arraignments in city court. Jess MacMunn was fined $10 plus costs, totaling $20, and given six months at the state penal farm after pleading guilty to public intoxication, with an appeal indicated. Oscar Hunterman received $100 fine and $10 costs, totaling $110, and six months’ sentence at the penal farm after a guilty plea. Damon Brock and Paul P. Silence faced motions and venue changes. Luther C. LeMaster was fined $10 with $20 total after a public intoxication arrest. Harold E. McIntosh listed among those charged.
Lim Kwang Won, a 20 year old POW with the U N K Eighth Army in Korea, says the North Korean First Division crossed the Naktong River near Hamchang and fought with 6 000 green troops and 3 000 veterans. He says many fresh recruits were seized in Seoul and about 5 000 others were forced into the Communist army. His platoon leaders were killed in battle and he surrendered after hiding during the Reds retreat.
