Seymour common council approved a civil city levy of 2.00 for 1949 up from 1.19 this year, with the general fund rising to 1.61 from 1.02. Mayor Donald L. Heiwig cited higher costs, a depleted fund, and a planned reserve to avoid future loans, promising lower taxes next year if valuations and funding allow.
Officers for the coming year were elected at the 113th annual Brownstown Baptist Association meeting held all day at New Harmony Baptist Church east of Crothersville. Rev. Walter Moseley was reelected moderator. Charles Richey became vice moderator and Mrs. Wayne Snow was named clerk treasurer. The convention theme was Lift Up Your Eyes, part of Crusade for Christ Through Evangelism.
Seymour housewives launch a spontaneous boycott of fresh meat to protest rising prices. Women phone neighbors, pledge three each, and urge further calls while allowing fish and poultry to be bought. grocers report no immediate drop in meat sales.
Seymour records a 50 degree low for August, with a 77 degree high and forecasts of only slight warmups. Cold spots include 48 in South Bend and Fort Wayne area, while northern Wisconsin reports frost and the Gulf Coast remains hot.
John W. Heller 69 of Brownstown died Thursday night at his home after a four month illness. He organized the Jackson Brick and Holloware Company and served as an officer. Survived by wife Margaret Shields, son James P. Heller, two brothers and a sister. Funeral Saturday at 2 PM from the family home. Burial Fairview Cemetery Brownstown.
Official maximum temperature reached 77 degrees with a 2 pm reading of 75. Official minimum 60.6 with river stage at 2.1 feet. Weather data reflects the day’s temperature spread and river level readings.
Floyd Price of Kentucky was released on a $500 bond from Jackson county jail at Brownstown after arrest on a charge of operating a motor vehicle under the influence. He was taken into custody Thursday on U S Road 31 near its junction with U S Road 50 east of Seymour by Officer Lawrence Conway of the Seymour state police post.
Flames charred matted debris including seats were found off the African coast in the south Atlantic. The U S Coast Guard Cutter Campbell located the wreckage and its commander said there is little doubt it belongs to the Air France Lateorere 631 missing with 52 aboard since Sunday.
Senator William E Jenner was appointed as chair of the speakers’ bureau for the Republican presidential campaign. The announcement came in Washington, D C, from Herbert Brownell Jr campaign manager for Governor Thomas E Dewey. The appointment is effective immediately.
Indianapolis August 6 The sale of United States Bonds in Indiana during the security loan drive totaled 66 831 000 or 669 000 short of the state's quota Campaign Director Orville R Maxfield announced He called the record excellent despite the narrow miss noting the figure excluded sales to banks and other financial institutions during the campaign period.
A Jackson County Civic Association temperance rally will be held Sunday at 2 30 PM at the First Baptist Church in Seymour. Ellis B Hargrave of Indianapolis, superintendent of the Indiana Anti Saloon League, will be the speaker. The group says people support churches schools and homes and oppose alcohol traffic as it hinders health happiness and prosperity. The meeting will follow the talk.
Funeral services for Pfc. Harlan Short of North Vernon who fell in action August 19 1944 during the Sicily invasion will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at Tea Creek Baptist Church Jennings county with burial at Tea Creek Cemetery Military rites will be provided by a Jennings county American Legion post. Short brother of Mrs Loren Rogers and of John Short, his body arriving in North Vernon at 10 a.m. Monday. He enlisted February 15 1941 and served over three years before his death.
A total of 13 truck drivers were charged with operating overweight trucks after weighing at the permanent pit scales southeast of Seymour. Officer Jack Curry of the Seymour state police post cited the drivers into justice of the peace court.

Lou Kaplan testifies before a House labor subcommittee on picket line violence during a 90 day strike at the Univisions Company in Dayton Ohio. Kaplan accuses Governor Herbert of aiding management by sending Ohio National Guard troops to the strike scene. He declines to reveal Communist affiliation.
American, British and French envoys talked for three hours with Foreign Minister Molotov of Russia about the Berlin crisis and cold war issues. They left the Kremlin smiling and sought further talks at the American embassy. Dispatches from London, Berlin and Moscow hinted at a weekend announcement for another foreign ministers meeting. The State Department press officer in Washington discounted the reports.
District Governor T. Perry Wesley of Bicknell Indiana paid Seymour Lions Club its first official visit since election. Wesley, former Seymour member and past club president, praised the club’s community service and urged members to invest in their community. President E S Cummins led the meeting and announced a directors’ session while presenting perfect attendance pins to five Lions.
Washington Aug 6 The Senate passed a compromise housing bill substituting for the Taft Ellender Wagner measure and sending it to the House. The bill provides no low rent or slum clearance subsidies and follows a 48 36 vote to replace the T E W act. The Banking Committee also altered inflation controls including bank reserve requirements and installment buying restrictions. The discussion included potential Truman price wage and rationing amendments and a Barkley led push for broader housing legislation and veteran loan guarantees.
