The Seymour board tentatively approves a 1947 budget with a tax levy of 1.50 plus a 0.40 building levy, totaling 1.90. It reorganizes, accepts several resignations, and hires new teachers James Deputy and Sam Johnson, with building and salary increases driving the rise.
Harry H Hubbard 57 of 309 East Fourth Street died suddenly at his home after a five month illness. A piano tuner known across Jackson County he was blind since a youth accident and a First Methodist Church member. He was born July 31 1889 in Freedom Indiana and moved to the county in 1914. He married Verna Prather on November 8 1919. Surviving are his widow a daughter Elizbeth Acitelle two brothers Calvin Hubbard Maj L E Hubbard a sister Ina McBurnie two half brothers John Auton Ben Auton and four half sisters Elizabeth Griffiths Jenny Curry Josephine Lester Mary Bell. One son Lt Billy Hubbard was killed in 1943 in Arizona. Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
The city council meets tonight at 7:30 in the council chamber to discuss the 1947 budget. Residents from the northeast area plan to protest the spread of sawdust cinders over their part of the city.
A mon night rain measured 1.34 inches aiding county crops with minor damage from winds. Temperatures fell from 93 to 67 after the storm and rain extended to Terre Haute and Indianapolis with other cities reporting gusts and crops impacted.
In a unanimous resolution the Seymour Chamber of Commerce urged the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad to resume stopping four trains at Seymour and install night flashing signals and an underpass at Poplar street. The board also urged state funding for a Jackson County forest hotel and state park status. A Vincesnes Chamber note about naming an air study group followed.
Mrs Maggie Rich 72 died early this morning at her Paris Crossing home after a ten day illness. Born February 11 1874 in Jackson county she lived most of her life in the county. She was a Marion Baptist Church member and was married forty eight years to Frank Rich. They had one adopted daughter Mrs Hazel Jolly of Indianapolis.
The piece urges Seymour voters to consider returned servicemen as strong candidates in May primaries and November city elections for a four year term starting 1948. It argues servicemen bring leadership, business experience, and plans for airport, sewage, water, and growth, and stresses their unity could shape the city’s future.
Jackson County board of commissioners met at Brownstown courthouse to consider the 1947 budget. They kept most items as submitted and sent the plan to the county council, noting the levy cannot be raised after publication and that revenue may be about one cent lower next year. A $17,668.44 state gasoline tax refund was reported, and the health nurse’s budget was unchanged for council submission.
Lieutenant Commander Joseph Amick, 28, a Seymour native living in Washington DC, was killed in a Navy airplane crash in Maryland during a routine flight. He served in World War II, later stationed in Washington, and is survived by his wife, two young children, his parents in Cincinnati, and relatives including Willard N. Everhart Sr. and Jr. in Seymour.
Seymour Rotary Club members and guests met in the Reliance Manufacturing Company plant cafeteria to view demonstrations of dress shirt production. A. T. Bard Sam Manaccus and S. M. Guthunz from Chicago spoke, with R. J. Shepherd guiding tours and program operations. Guests included W. Calvert Brand Lt Hobart Ahlbrand and W. F. Ackerman. James Thompson was introduced as a new member.

The VA office in Room 21 of the Vehstage building opened recently, operating 8 a m to 4 30 p m Monday through Saturday, DST. About sixty veterans have visited, including two women, with on the job training and insurance questions noted.
Washington reports war investigators pursue a tip that Rep May visited Miami Beach Florida in March or April 1944 with officials from the Garrion munitions group. An official says the Mead committee was told the Kentucky congressman stayed at the Versailles Hotel with Murray and Henry Garsson, leaders of Batavia Erie Basin Metal and related firms.
Secretary James F Byrnes and Soviet Foreign Minister Vyacheslav Molotov traded charges in the Paris peace conference rules committee over dictation and published records Byrnes challenged Molotov to prove American remarks appeared in the Soviet press Molotov defended the four powers agreed decisions as the committee prepared to vote on whether a simple or two thirds majority should pass treaty recommendations
Funeral services for Staff Sergeant Roy Vance Jr. will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. from Voss Mortuary with Rev. Franklin M. Moore presiding. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery. Military rites will be led by Capt. L. B. Krogh. Vance died Saturday at Percy Jones General Hospital after serving in the 15th Air Force. He flew 52 missions as a B-24 radio gunner earning the Air Medal with four oak leaf clusters and other honors. He entered service November 16 1942 and returned September 1 1944. A brother, Harold C. Vance, was killed in Europe.
Washington reports a $1.6 billion public works program halted as a presidential edict directs a three phase moratorium. Agencies may defer $700 million of construction and must list at least $700.1 million to be reconsidered between 1946 and 1947. Exemptions include veterans housing, hospitals, overseas projects, and certain roads.
In Athens Tennessee the court certified five World War II veterans as elected officials and sheriff Knox Henry, after a six hour riot over ballot counting tied to Cantrell supporters. Sheriff Mansfield resigned and is missing, as certification followed a special session of McMinn county court.
