City council approved a seven and one half cent raise for eight street workers raising the hourly rate to forty five cents for up to forty eight hours per week. The step came after a petition cited rising living costs and was supported by the finance committee as funds allowed. (Continued on page 5 column 5)
The Seymour Concert Band directed by Adolph Steinwedel performs its ninth concert of the season at Gaiser Park Thursday night starting at 8 45. The program includes marches and overtures such as On Guard for the U S S A Anchors Aweigh Belmont Indiana Band Masters Association and Good Bless America with solos and duets by local musicians.
Funeral services for Daniel Scheffer age seventy five North Vernon will be conducted at 2 oclock Thursday afternoon from the North Vernon Methodist Church Burial will be at North Vernon The North Vernon Lodge No 59 F A M of which he was a member will conduct services at the grave Mr Scheffer who was a retired Baltimore and Ohio railroad er died at Sehneck Memorial Hospital Monday night He had been admitted to the local hospital for treatment July 17 A number of railroad men here knew him.
Forest officials warn a week of woodland blazes as thousands of squirrel hunters head into southern Indiana. Dry July and August raise fire danger in Jackson County and nearby Brown and Clark counties, with firefighting crews prepared for outbreaks.
The 1941 to mato packing season started at 10 am at the Vincennes Packing Corporation plant. Superintendent Andy E. Horstman said the factory should reach capacity within ten days. About 300 workers—150 men and 150 women—are on twenty four hour shifts, with the bulk of tomatoes expected to come in soon.
Funeral services for Richard Manuel aged eighty one will be held in Jasonville Indiana Thursday afternoon. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery with the procession arriving in town around 2 or 2 30 oclock. Manuel a native of Jackson county had lived at Freetown for about thirty years and was known for his timber business in the county.
Martin B. Hendry 95, a longtime Civil War veteran and former Houston Postmaster who served with Sherman on the march to the sea, died at his Freetown home after a month long illness and a stroke. Funeral services are planned Friday at 11 AM from the Freetown Methodist Church. Burial will be in Houston Cemetery. He had remained active, driving his own car until recently. The survivor count and earlier birthday celebrations were noted in local obituaries.
George Harvey of the state department will address a meeting on the Dudleytown School lawn Thursday night at 9 o clock DST. The Washington Township Farm Bureau sponsors the event open to all. String music is planned to accompany the gathering.
Four county 4-H clubs plan an all expenses paid trip from Jackson Lawrence Orange and Crawford to Cincinnati and Coney Island aboard special trains. The August 26 excursion includes Cincinnati Zoo Island Queen boat ride and return to Indianapolis area. Tickets go on sale August 20 at county agents offices only with prices 2.95 for adults and 1.80 for children five to eleven. sale lasts four days.
Will R. Isaacs announces that 132 Jackson county farmers borrowed $37,201.83 on the 1941 wheat crop stored in Seymour and Louisville public storages. Applications are being taken for loans on farm stored grains and will be acted on promptly.
Noel Jackson age 33 of 4629 Manlove Avenue Indianapolis died Tuesday at Sunnyside Sanatorium after six months illness. Funeral conducted at Moore & Kirk Northside Colonial Mortuary Fairfield Avenue. Burial planned in Riverview Cemetery Seymour. He was husband of the former George Alice Graes sie.
Col. Frank Knox secretary of the Navy will address the Loyal Order of Moose fifty third annual international convention in Indianapolis from August 24 to 29. Seymour members are expected to attend sessions with a patriotic meeting at the Indiana World War Memorial grounds. Governor Mathew M. Neal of West Virginia is to speak the same night.
At the Seymour city council meeting Councilman Don L. Herwig reported Gaiser Park has drawn 22,670 visitors since its May 29 opening, with July bringing 14,460 and June 7,350. The count reflects hours monitored by Martin Brand, hinting at higher attendance overall.
Mildred Goens of this city was fined 5 and costs totaling 16.95 after arraignment in John Russell's court, Brownstown justice of the peace, on a trespass charge filed by Mrs. Mary Laudermilt of Cranetown. The incident allegedly occurred Tuesday when Laudermilt fired at Goens and a male companion but caused no injuries. Deputy Sheriff Cletus Sneed and the Brownstown marshal arrested Goens this morning.

Chairman George of Georgia says measures may seek to offset revenue losses from eliminating joint returns for married couples.
Police investigate a 1941 model sedan owned by Martin Fishback of 411 Emerson Drive after it was found abandoned in Bloomington Tuesday with stolen plates. The car, stolen in Seymour Sunday at about 11:15 PM, may link to a vehicle abandoned in Crothersville where three youths were seen departing. Authorities check possible connections between Bloomington and Crothersville thefts and the Seymour incident.
Harold Emnson Merlin Sitterding Ervin Stahl from Grassy Fork and Lynn Hinnefeld of Browns Town attend the state 4H conservation camp at McCormick's Creek State Park near Spencer Owen County. Scholarships are awarded yearly to 4H boys with two years of success.
About 1,200,000 railroad workers prepared for strike ballots after carriers rejected wage increase demands. Chicago talks by five operating brotherhoods and 14 non operating unions target 20 percent raises for 350,000 members and 30 to 34 cent hourly boosts for others. Management cites annual cost near 900 million dollars.

Mrs. J. K. Bramiette aged 96, mother of Hayden Bramiette of West Fourth Street, died Tuesday afternoon at the Louisville home of her daughter Mrs. Robert Kelley. She had been in failing health for years but not in critical condition, born in Kentucky and once a resident of Irvington where her late husband was a prominent contractor.

Farmers receive prices 17 to 78 percent higher than a year ago as butterfat, chickens, beef cattle, veal calves, lambs and wool exceed parity.
